Jim Cornette Reviews MJF's "Pipe Bomb" Promo on AEW Dynamite 

Over fifty years ago Johnny Valentine said it best, 'I can't make them believe that wrestling is real, but I can make them believe I'm real.' MJF is doing just that and the result is awesome.

When MJF referred to AEW "All Friends Wrestling", my Wife, who isn't the biggest PW fan, said, "Somebody listens to Cornette." I about died laughing...

Brian was right at the end, the fact no-one really knows how much of this is shoot/work is the best part. Given its 2022 that's saying something.

"Genius." "Once in a generation performer." "One of the best promos in the history of wrestling." We just heard Jim Cornette say all three of those things, about the same person, all within 10 minutes. If that doesn't convince you that MJF is going places, I don't know what will.

Mjf gets it. He’s one of the few modern wrestlers who understands how the business works fundamentally.

100% agree with Jim about Dave's comments. "It's dangerous to talk about people dropping their opponents on their heads." Is it more dangerous than LETTING YOUR WRESTLERS DROP THEIR OPPONENTS ON THEIR HEADS?

This promo was a Ric Flair type of intense and down to the wire. Awesome.

I got back into wrestling because of CM Punk. I'm sticking with it because of MJF.

MJF for so long has been one of the saving graces of AEW and best Heel in the company, He lost his past 3 feuds I could understand his frustration

That promo was absolutely brilliant. I predict that in a few years, he will be the next wrestling megastar in the same league as John Cena, Steve Austin, The Rock, Hulk Hogan, Randy Savage, and Ric Flair.

I can't say it enough, mjf is AEW. From the beginning he's why I've tuned in. The only gripes I have is I wished we would have been able to see all of the dynasty in aew and I want him to hold a belt for a LOOOOONG time

The second I saw this promo, I was waiting for Jim and Brian to react to it.

I was there live! So unexpected and the crowd firing him up made it all that much better. What a promo and what a guy. Pay the man!

The guys nail it at the end of this clip…the best part of this whole thing is the fact that we TRULY don’t know what’s a work and what isn’t. MJF found a way to recapture that old school “did you see that?!” element that’s been missing from wrestling for years, going on decades. That’s what MJF’s peers need to be noting here. That’s the biggest takeaway from this entire thing. Truly working the audience…that’s the way they’ll get their industry back…

The one part of modern day wrestling that sucks is there is nothing that makes us question if it’s a shoot or a work. MJF is an actual old school heel that never breaks character.

The thumbnail hits it right on the head. MJF is the only pillar still standing and carrying the company on its back.

There's no such thing as the 4 pillars of Aew. Darby will be a quadriplegic before the decade ends, Jungle Boy is nothing special, and Sammy is the new Xpac. Mjf is a generational talent and the fact he's not one of most paid guys is a disservice.

I got back into wrestling for other wrestlers but stuck around for MJF. The guy is on another level at the moment, and may well truly be a once in a generation talent

By the end of MJF’s promo, whatever it was, shoot, work, pipe bomb, nuclear bomb, whatever, it felt like a face turn. The fans were cheering for him by the end of it

Great promo this is what wrestling should be like, get's you emotionally invested without having to do all the dumb unsafe stuff in the ring which majority of the time makes no sense.

Id like to think when Jim sat back and watched this, he had a smirk on his face and thought, that a boy.

I personally think MJF and Tony took MJF's real feelings and aggression and agreed to turn it into an angle. They agreed that he'd go out and air his grievances to get it over. Kinda like when WWE turned Matt Hardy's real life heat with Edge into a story that majorly got over. Whatever it is, it's fire!

Disagree with any of that promo not being a work. If any of it wasn't, MJF's mic would have been cut a hell of a lot sooner. Everything he said was allowed to be said.

It started as a heel promo or “bad guy” promo but it ended as the most popular guy in the company his return will be epic if he ever comes back to AEW

Best promo in wrestling in a long while. MJF is phenomenal, a true talent. Let's hope this is the beginning of a huge angle for MJF to make a run at the AEW World Championship belt. There were a lot of home truths in this promo that is always a good thing. Great TV!

I have been WAITING for this review!!

I don’t watch modern wresting. I haven’t really since 2003. I just listen to these podcasts. I did however watch that promo! I couldn’t give a rats ass if it was a work, shoot blah blah blah. It was executed perfectly. I can’t imagine too many are as good as him in todays wrestling climate.

Plain and Simple...MJF knows exactly what to do...in the ring and outside the ring. The no show at the autograph signing was perfectly timed and only "pushed" him even further up the Heel ladder.

The best promos always come from a real place and this was a great one as it was full of real stuff and that's why the fans ate it up!

In normal circumstances, people would have talked about how wardlow squashed MJF. But like all the major players MJF found out way to make it about him. People are not talking about wardlow there're talking about MJF. Major players always find a way to get attraction.

Once they knew punk was injured they needed MJF to go out there and take over.

When we finally got AEW this side, MJF was legit the main reason I watched AEW. TK needs to see and appreciate this guy.

The only problem with this was MJF doing the stretcher job at the ppv, and then coming out completely healthy on Dynamite. That leads me to believe that the angle at the ppv was done in case Tony & MJF couldn't work things out. MJF took 10 power bombs and was completely fine by Wednesday😄. This angle is going to go to shit once Tony tries to become Vince.

The fire me, fire me part of the promo was a complete rip from Flairs promo on Nitro September 1998 when the horseman reunited. Still an awesome promo.

Of course it's all a work but it was a brilliant promo and it's been really well done.

I'm pretty sure this is MJF and Punk redoing the summer 2011 the way Punk originally envisioned it. Only this time MJF's the antihero babyface who's being held down, and Punks playing the role of Cena to ultimately put him over. They kinda showed their cards when Punk went out to confront him during the commercials. Hopefully the plan was to keep MJF away from the company long enough, that Punk's injury won't kill the angle

I'm curious as to why people think this is so unique. It was basically an r rated version of CM Punk's pipe bomb from 2011...

As much as I love AEW, the booking does leave a lot to be desired at times and it also feels like Tony is making decisions solely based on what the hardcore fans want to see rather than trying to get the casual viewer into what he's trying to sell, so the part about him belonging behind the rail with the fans rather than being the one booking the whole show is unfortunately true and not even the most diehard AEW apologist with a single brain cell can deny it, he would be better off handing the reins over to someone like Delirious if he can get him involved because Hunter knows how to keep people invested in stuff. Looking back, yeah they have kinda wasted several people they brought in from WWE (Ruby Soho, Adam Cole, Andrade El Idolo among others), but as long as those people feel like they're having more freedom there than they did before, I think that matters more than anything even if all those people deserve much better booking. Good ol' Dave Meltzer should do something other than rate every Kenny Omega and/or Young Bucks match a million stars like he's been doing for years, that's just plain favoritism and the criticisms the company gets are valid even though I stand by my point that their product is usually more entertaining than the PG crap WWE champions apart from a few specific things

The wrestling marks don’t want to admit it but the best parts of wrestling are great storylines and promos. All the high flying spot crap wrestlers do today just covers up that they can’t get over doing anything else

I'd pay good money to see Jim Cornette manage MJF on live TV. That shit would be hilarious. As for the promo itself, I think it's mostly a work. TK seems smart enough to change things up on the fly when things get ugly.

I thought this promo had pretty typical bad wrestling acting and filled with clichés, this is "insert real name" talking. "I'm the best etc etc" just the same shit you've heard on any random indy show the past 15 years. There's really only very few wrestlers who talk like real people and not do typical "wrestling" promos.

This promo was Masterful one of the Best work shoot promo ever.

In a promo that he nailed so many things dead on the part he said he can make us feel and he doesn't have to do a bunch of bullshit to get us there is in a nutshell my problem with AEWs product as a whole. Too many of the guys try way too hard & don't understand how less can be so much more. MJF has proven over the past year when the fans are in attendance they don't need high spot after high spot to be interested in what's going on. Hopefully at some point these younger guys look at what he's doing and how Punk, Danielson & others do just fine without high risk moves. Kinda sucks though the best heel in the business is gonna get more cheers the more he speaks these kind of truths but someone needs to say em

For some reason his promo reminded me of the classic Brian Pillman ECW promo, it started as a heel promo but by the end of it he had the people on his side.

MJF doesn't get to cut that promo without a new deal. As a result, he needs to be interim champion.

My dad always believed, "If they're showing it on TV, it's fake. It's part of the show." He didn't believe in any on-air shoots or pipebombs. If you have a television production, you're in control of what airs and what doesn't. I've always kind of leaned towards that. In this instance, the camera men were certainly treating it like it was all a part of the plan. Of course, my dad also believes that WCW and WWF were both ALWAYS owned by Vince and that Kane was played by multiple different guys over the years. Or that the original Kane died and they had to replace him with another guy. Then again, my dad also liked to argue points that he himself didn't believe in just to get the other person pissed. Like how we had a heated argument about how "Star Wars was NEVER called 'Episode Four' it was ALWAYS called STAR WARS." Or how he tried to convince my wife, a big Harry Potter fan, that all the kids who played in the movies were all in their thirties at the time.

I feel like its a testament to how much AEW isn't criticized that people are so surprised this made it on air and are comparing this to Punk's Pipe Bomb. CM Punk insulted Hogan, HHH, Rock and Stephanie by name, took several direct shots at Vince and mocked WWE's lack of growth. MJF on the other hand didn't call out any other wrestler in particular and even took the time to mention how a lot of the boys in the back are great. He called Tony a mark and that was pretty much it which is nothing compared to what Punk and others have called Vince on-aire. It was a great promo but as far as shooting on the company goes, its pretty tame.

I have been very patiently waiting for this one, lol. Absolutely insane promo. Like one of the best I've heard in a long time.

The only gripe I had about this was it immediately happened after Wardlow put him on a stretcher this past PPV. It made the promo more real but I wish it gave Wardlow’s some time to breathe

I’ll say this, having the next match right after that promo be to ex-WWE guys made me laugh a little harder.

I haven't waited in anticipation like this for a JC video in a while, plus I love seeing that Jim is trending.

A work from the start. I think he renegotiated his contract before this, took inspiration from the “Pipe Bomb” and the Flair returns and unloads on Bischoff promo, took complaints from the IWC towards AEW and made a great promo out of it.

"...THAT CAN'T LACE MY GOD DAMNED BOOTS!" is the best & most overlooked line of the MJF Pipebomb, partially b/c 90% of the YT reactors have been yelling & laughing over it.

Without Punk and MJF, what does AEW really have?
