......and the match where Stan Hansen gouged his eye, literally, out of his socket. Vader pushed it back in and kept going....and never once bragged about it or used it to get himself over. It'd be a tough match to call but something tells me there is no way in hell that Lesnar could handle that kind of situation then shrug it off. There is video of the match online if there happens to be anyone who doesn't believe it.
I agree, John Doe. Unfortunately, Vader came in at the wrong time when the Kliq was running the show. I think if Brock came in during 96 and dealt with the Kliq, I guarantee you that he wouldn't be a world champion.
@@kaybee328 I don't know if I agree with Cornette about that odd statement. I think most people find God when they ran out of money or too depressed from taking too much drugs.
My favorite thing he says is something about how you only find religion when you mess up your life so badly that no one here on Earth will talk to you lol
Thing of it is, Jim is 100% right about how Leon "Vader" was in real life. He was related to my ex girlfriend's father and I'd met him back in '97. Though I would seriously doubt if he remembered me. We only spoke a few words, but he was very kind given the circumstances in which we met.
@@asandwich6823 did I say I’m an athlete? I could do one with less than a week training, no doubt.Athletes are in the olympics, in hardcore sports that need strength and cardio to be at the top.to say someone is an athlete because they did half a backflip is ridiculous.that’s not an opinion
I think one of the coolest things they did with Vader was when Kane was doing all those run-ins, hurting and destroying everyone he could get too, long before taker got involved, Vader was the only one who stood his ground, stared Kane right in the eye and said I'm not afraid of you.
I cant believe Cornette has the nerve to call any one else unprofessional. Throwing a rock through some ones window, physically assaulting a co worker backstage and threatening to murder some one. Yeah I don't think Corny has a leg to stand on here
"People in this business who find god when everyone else hates them so bad they won't speak to them" That's certainly the case with Russo, Bill Watts, Jake Roberts and Lex Luger.
***** I didn't mean it literally, I meant it as a metaphor. I meant to say that the only people who all of a sudden 'find God' are the ones who have done so much shit in their life that one can say, metaphorically speaking, that one could say they've 'seen the Devil'. It's a metaphor, nothing more. You people need to stop taking things so literally.
This guy knows a lot, and he’s true about all what he said. I saw the match back in the day, kicking Vader on his face and yelling at him was a thing of ugliness. I wonder how Vader was patient about it, a man of his strength and size would destroy Shawn in seconds.
+Samuel Esposito Last I checked, you can actually hear what Shawn says. I don't know about RU-vid, but the VHS I still own is crystal clear when that scene happens. I'd check the tape if I was home, but the reality is, it sounds RU-vid has a crappy version and the Network may censor/mute that dialogue. I've only seen it live and on VHS many times over the years and he screams move very loudly. It's been too long but asshole, idiot or dumb shit, or all is pretty much what he says. Shoot interviews on the topic have blurred my memory of what was said.
Thomas Edwards yes, your totally right. Vader was stiff because thats all he knew, learning from guys like Stan Hansen and Bruiser Brody. Micheals is or was an a-hole imo.
I'm from Vader's home state of Colorado and I have actually got to meet Vader a couple of times and he couldn't of been nicer or cooler was afraid it would of been the opposite but he was cool as hell!!!
Vader originally wrestled in Japan where that was normal. He was stiff with everyone. Even Cornette admitted it. Vader was widely known as being stiff, but he wasn't reckless. He didn't go around injuring guys. If you want to see a guy who was stiff AND reckless, see Goldberg. Vader was equally stiff, but he didn't injure guys. Vader was known as a professional, Goldberg had guys(i.e. William Regal) try to show him up in the ring. That's the difference.
I remember when Vader first came to WWF in 1996 and I was so excited thinking of all the dream matches that of could happened. Vader should of won the WWF title off Shawn at survivor series and lost it back to him at Royal Rumble but they went with Sid instead. We should of got Vader vs Bret for the belt at December IYH and major feuds with Sid, The Undertaker, and Mankind but since Shawn always got in Vince's ear and played politics, he killed Vader's run by crying about him being too rough in the ring and is all downhill from there.
+Steven Kwak Jim cornette shoots are great, When he is doing shoots on 3 people he hates the most. That would be 1.russo 2. kevin dunn 3. hbk 3 people cornette has major heat with over yrs. Cornette is very entertaining. Siriusxm Should give cornette his own wrestling channel on siriusxm.
Everyone seems to hate the "old" Shawn Michaels, but I personally find the stories about him hilarious because he did what he wanted and no one could stop him. Badass.
Yeah...at being an insecure, selfish, petulant, drug addicted piece of shit who ruined a LOT of wrestlers' careers because he needed to have the spotlight on himself 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Fuck Shawn Michaels!
Vince's wanting to change Vader's name to 'The Mastodon' ranks right up there with Jim Herd's wanting to have Ric Flair cut his hair, start wearing an earring and change his name to 'SPARTACUS'. WTF?!?!
Heaven forbid Shawn not want to actually get hit in a pro wrestling match. I always love the term "working stiff." Working stiff is not hard. Anyone can work stiff. The real skill and the real art comes in making the punches look real when they're not. I always find it humorous when someone criticizes a wrestler for not wanting to work with somebody who is legitimately hitting them.
If HBK is the changed individual he claims to be (which, after watching some of his interviews and documentaries, I believe he is) he would probably be the first one to agree with Cornette's negative assessment and probably feels pretty sorry for the things he did.
Shadowlit001 I don't know the details (and neither do you), but guess what? You can be a Christian and still not get along with some people, or maintain negative aspects of your personality. It may surprise you, but Christians are people too.
VKM likes certain themes and gimmicks, which he tends to repeat over and over. The Mastadon bit got used on other wrestlers too, the last one being Viscera. He also has a thing for dancers and song using the phrase 'somebody call my momma', which has now been used on three different wrestlers. He likes bright colors, evil rich guys, long hair. Muscle and definition equals skill and competence, while not having it means slow, stupid and/or silly.
Cornette really seems like an honest, straight-forward guy. A lot of the stuff he mentions is easily verifiable. If you go back to the tape, Michaels does kick Vader like he says, and also, Michaels appeared to dislike Jose Lothario - at the Wrestlemania match with Bret Hart, after winning, you can see Michaels say something to Earl Hebner, and then Hebner seems to tell Lothario to get out of the ring (which Lothario did, albeit with frustration).
Hahahahaha That was the best Mcmahon impression of all fucking time. Im an HBK fan, but I gotta hand it to Cornell on this one. Shawn was drugged out and as egotistical as they come. That's why his prime only lasted from 1996-1998. He was his own worst enemy in that light. By the time he returned after his back injury it really was watered down Shawn compared to what he was. Always a fan though. Jim really does a good job at calling wrestlers on there shit. Especially the way they disrespect the business.
+Paden Smith Oh and the watered down part is bullshit, him vs kurt angle at 21 and against taker are awesome matches just to name a few. Pro Wrestlin Illustrated gave him the match of the year award 7 times in a row!!!
As someone who has never in the 25 years of watching wrestling, liked Shawn Michaels, it makes me happy things like youshoot exist. I say this because in my generation if you KNEW something about a performer it was still just heresay, there was no internet, kayfabe was still such a big deal. NOW we live in an era where alot of these dickheads manipulating the business can be properly exposed and shot on. Makes me smile.
Man I used to like Shawn Michaels as a kid but now that I can look back at PPV's like SummerSlam 96 which I just finished watching, I lost a lot of respect I previously had for Shawn. Vader should have easily been put over without a problem but Shawn Michaels of course had a huge ego and probably still does considering he sweet chinned Sting at WM to help bury him. He uses religion as an excuse to be looked at in a positive light as well. The fact that he and the Kliq killed kayfabe at the Garden in 1996 just showed he had no respect for wrestling and keeping it's secrets.
Clokworx Ummm the superkick to Sting was part of the storyline. And Shawn has admitted to being a big time asshole back in the 90's, everybody knows this. As for the MSG incident, Vince gave those guys permission to do that so blame him. And I like how killing kayfabe at a friggin' house show "killed the business". A lot bigger issues did more to "kill the business" than that one night and considering we still had the attitude era to come it didn't kill anything.
Anthony Anderson He didn't give them permission to do it. He just didn't care that they did it. When footage of the video was leaked, he punished them by sticking them in low profile matches for years...HHH was even taken out of the running for King of the Ring finalist and was replaced by Stone Cold.
+kao123456654 The only one who received any sort of punishment was Triple H. Hall and Nash were about to bolt to WCW and Shawn was already WWE champ and the company's biggest draw.
Here's the summerslam incident www.dailymotion.com/video/xzo2s3_summerslam-1996-shawn-michaels-vs-vader-wwf-championship_sport&start=1091 he really kicked him, damn
That is pretty messed up. Vader MUST have been the big teddy bear Cornette and other folk have said he is--otherwise I'm not sure what prevented him from grabbing Michaels and turning him into a pretzel.
Vader did not move so it was automatically Shawn's fault? Well, sure it was a little unprofessional to give Vader a little kick in the head, but there has been so many unprofessional wrestlers and yet for some reason people only seem to remember Shawn Michaels. Vader layed his hands on some talk show host, because the host asked him "is wrestling real or fake" (the question was written by a viewer). Jeff Hardy was an erratic junkie who refused to go to rehab and constantly did not appear on the show. Batista was an asshole at the backstage. He thought he was the better than everyone else and got tons of heat from other wrestlers.
Yeah what was Shawn supposed to do but improvise when Vader fucked up? It's funny how these so called 'smarks' get so opinionated about wrestlers in real life and let it affect their Wrestling opinion. They really need to realise that Wrestling as a whole is fake and that it's all backstage politics.
Vader did put his hands on a interviewer on a talk show, it was a rib, a good friend of the host told Vader when he asks if wrestling is fake go completely nuts, Vader not knowing the host didn't know about this nearly shat him when Vader went nuts, Undertaker saved Vader's job by telling all the wwf heads he was there when Vader was asked to do it by the friend of the host.
