Quick review of Jim Green's Razorback work boots. This is my first review, apologies if I paused or smacked too much haha.
I've had them for about a month and a half now and they've been put through the paces. I'd been looking for a pair of reliable work boots/hikers/shit kickers and seen Jim Green's presence on Facebook so I figured I'd give them a shot. They just recently got distribution within the states so I was able to order a pair through Amazon.
Price: $130 USD
Sizing: True to size. The last these are built on is quite roomy in the toe portion.
Pros:
-Uniquely South African, eccentric branding/colors
-Stitchdown welted, I mistakenly said they were goodyear welted in the video. This doesn't change the face that they can still be resoled.
-Quality lug sole, very durable
Padded ankle and tongue, the reinforcement makes them very easy to slip on and off very comfortable to walk in because of the padding
-Leather lined, yellow calf lining in ankle portion
-Strong eyelets and speed hooks, I wasn't able to get them to bend by hand
Celastic toe steel toe versions also available
-Decent full grain leather, not Red Wing quality but good considering the price point.
-Minimal break-in required, as soon as I got them I was able to put them on and go to work
Cons:
Creasing along welt this may be due to the custom orthotics I have inside of them, however.
-Prominent grain break on the vamp of the right boot
-***Stock insole is low quality, I immediately swapped them out for some custom insoles instead.
Verdict: Fantastic boots for the price. It's always a good idea to temper your expectations if something seems too good to be true, but these boots were a nice surprise. To the best of my knowledge the creasing/grain break could just be an issue with my pair, but ultimately it's a non-issue for me- I bought these to be work boots and hikers so I don't expect them to be pretty anyway.
**As far as the insole is concerned, Jim Green actually reached out to me (I also posted this review on RU-vid) to let me know that the next batch of boots heading stateside will have leather/poron inserts- this won't change the price, either. Really cool to see them address criticism, good on them.**
One last thing regarding the construction- the midsole isn't leather, since it's $130. I'm not sure what the material is but it's flexible and seems to be pretty durable, so I doubt there will be any long-term issues.

Thanks very much for the kind words and review on our Razorback! It really is a great work boot and legend in our range, it can also be used as a hiking boot if you able to take it on an adventure soon. Will be interesting to see a review on it a year or two down the line. We hoping to be one of the better value for money options out there. Then with regards to your negative points, we are in the process of rectifying our inner sole. Our bulk stock that will get to the USA in October will have a leather and poron combination. We are also not increasing the price with this addition. We looking forward to getting more of our boots into the USA and welcoming more to the Jim Green family, so thanks for the support. All the best

@@ninemimesleft they not waterproof but rather water resistant. Being double lasted they do hold out well in wet conditions but can’t be completely submerged for long periods. If you need more info please get in touch with us or visit our US website www.jimgreenfootwear.com

I just ordered my first pair from your website. I am excited to see how they hold up under the abuse I'm about to put them through! Regardless, seems like everyone agrees the value is there and I'm very hopeful that these will become a staple for my feet!

Just got my pair. Haven't noticed the creasing but they do have a slightly less refined quality about them. However they seem rock solid and the build quality issues won't be noticeable after a week of real work. Could easily see these boots being recognized as a positive symbol of made in South Africa. Definitely hit a sweet spot at the intersection of quality, style, and price.

Just got my pair. Absolutely love them. They are built like a tank, yet wearing them all day yesterday and today the break in isn’t bad at all, though I can tell it will take a while for the leather to soften. I recommend a half size up from your usual size. Anyway, these are great!

I hate to say this, but these are stitchdown boots instead of goodyear welted. They can still be resoled and everything but the welt on these is part of the upper.

Good review of my boots! For a few months, anyway. The leather grain issues you mention can also affect other areas -- for instance the heel counter lining of the right boot only is rough to the point of irritation. After working the seams and otherwise smoothing out the area (while the blister on my heel healed), they are much better now. The generous toe box is such a rare feature nowadays I'm happy to go through some breaking in discomfort to get the goods! I too needed a better insole, as the supplied one in combination with the fiber midsole and high durometer outsole was "hard" to take . . .

I recently got these and they now have a thin leather insole with a little poron patch in the heel area. So far I love them just starting to get them a bit more flexible which is making them more comfortable. I would say the only thing I would like to see is some type of cork foot bed that would mold a bit better to the foot. But as you stated $ 150 its not going to be a Nick's. I am still searching for a good insole would like a cork and leather combination.

I just got mine, literally 40 minutes ago. A bit rough around the edges, and yeah the insole is shit, but that doesn't matter. Cuts down the cost, and they're gonna get beat up and I'm using my superfeets anyway. But all around a great looking boot, that FITS my EEE foot comfortably (f*cking finally), and which feels like quality. Can't wait to break them in. Jim Green recommends conditioning them out of the box as there's no telling how long they've been sitting on the shelf since leaving the factory floor. Would you recommend mink oil initially to soften them up a bit, before waxing them? I also have Red Wing's mink oil/pine pitch/beeswax conditioner blend. I don't mind the darkening, I think they'll actually look gooood. I just hear a lot of people stay away from it, but I'm unclear as to why. Is it only for certain leather/construction types? And do you know if it's suitable for these? Thanks.

I am very tempted by a pair of these, at £189 though they are on the pricey side
@EnglandRemoval
@EnglandRemoval 7 месяцев назад
For the price, it's actually kind of a steal! Although £189 may seem high for some boots, these aren't Sketchers you'll replace every year or two, if you treat them right they're going to last long enough to be more cost effective than buying cheaper boots
@robertkirk4387
@robertkirk4387 7 месяцев назад
@@EnglandRemoval What I meant was that you can get as good for less, I bought a pair of Rogue ranger boots (Ray Mears website) for less also a pair of Haix extreme cold weather boots, Ex-military new and boxed for £70 the same for Alt-Berg defenders so they are still a bit on the expensive side, I do not buy rubbish and I have about 15 pairs of boots and would definitely buy these at £150 but they are closer to £200. With the padding they look like they may be quite hot to wear especially in summer. Given their origins am I mistaken and they breath decently well? Looking for another steel toe boot to rotate for work.
@harkerleatherworks
@harkerleatherworks 2 года назад
It's up to preference I suppose- I wear leather boots/shoes year round. They can get a little stuffy, but I tend to wear merino wool socks during the summer so my feet breathe better.

I hoghly suspect Jim Green descended from some sort of German company or Founder, that style of boots is particularly German

South Africa was heavily influenced by Belgium, they speak Afrikaans a dialect of Flemish in some parts. So yeah they have some of that influence.

Very hardy boots, but mine are wearing badly at the front of the outsole and this has nearly reached the stitching after only about a year of use (I often hike off paths). I guess I will need to chuck them when they reach that point?

can you tell me a little about the leather. Is it soft and buttery or does it have more of a plastic or vinyl feel to it?
@harkerleatherworks
@harkerleatherworks 3 года назад
It's a full grain oil tan hide, tough stuff- medium temper and feels a bit dry but it's a workboot leather so it's not going to have a luxurious hand-feel.
