Die hard 49ers fan for 3 decades, Harbaugh immediately propelled the 9ers from obscurity to perennial contenders. Potentially weird and overbearing, but accumulated a roster of straight bad-asses with one singular objective, a championship. Didn’t work out in that tenure, but hindsight reveals ownership didn’t have the fortitude or appreciation for his style. Chargers fans should be absolutely stoked for this guy. Potentially overbearing weirdo, yes. Straight DAWG, absolutely yes!

The right way to use statistics in sports is the Bayesian approach: The literal stats are your "prior" and the coach's gut instincts should modify that prior. e.g. use statistics to inform your gut instincts, but don't solely rely on either. IYKYK

Been a Chargers fan for more than 30 years. I have never been more happy for a season to start than this coming one. I know we have been let down a lot in the past but I really think we get over the hump and see the playoffs quite often and I am feeling very confident. This coaching staff that Harbaugh has put together is impressive. The players look way more refreshed and sharp in watching OTA's. They have had 98-100% Participation!!! I use to watch the games and I could tell my son what plays they were going to run most of the time and then of course the D would easily stop them. Not anymore!!! We finally get a running game to put the D on their heels and that was not present since Natron Means and the LT days!! We won games back then and went to the playoffs quite a bit!! Lets GO CHARGERS!!

As a huge michigan fan I was sad to see Harbaugh go. I was just as sad to see he took Jesse Minter with him. Herbert with a nasty defense has potential to be crazy.

As a Buckeye fan, I gained huge respect when Harbaugh first showed up to Michigan. He was running sidelines and throwing up. Said something like "I hope your willing to work as hard as I am." 👍

Harbaugh will have em dangerous sooner than later for sure he does it everywhere he goes I just hope it isn't this year Chargers always just have plain bad luck & injury problems every single year I wonder how Harbaugh affects that

As a Michigan man Harbaugh is my guy, but the Chargers are just one of those franchises man. Believe it when you see it.

From a maths perspective, think of 'momentum' as being on a heater when gambling. It is real, but also unquantifiable, and does not affect the outcome by itself (only the decision making process involved, the down & distance, score and the clock or the shape and number of dice aren't affected). It also exists right up until it doesn't, and you crap out - which is a potential outcome on every 'roll of the dice', as it were. What the numbers nerds are trying to say is that it doesn't necessarily matter (from an odds perspective) how you got to 4th and 3 on their 22, with 1:12 left, down by 4, when it comes to play calling or decision making going forward, and any perceived effect on the outcome is only confirmation bias (we all remember Richard Sherman's face when he realized they DIDN'T have it in the bag, which is always a possibility). It's a weird way of removing the human influence from the moment, and reducing everything to numbers (and that's why it sounds silly to an individual athlete or coach, and ultimately is silly since you're still talking about sports played by humans). The math does work though, and can be informative in the moment.

I don't think his charges matter, the NCAA can't penalize the NFL

Lions immediately came to mind when speaking about getting it done and not being the most talented and changing culture, biggest proponent of that in the NFL. They have been doing that in the draft in finding Dan Campbell guys and guys that fit that team/locker room. I'm a Lions fan but even so, they deserve the credit on how that staff turned around that team in a few very short years. Even when ppl were calling for Dan to be fired after that terrible 3-13 first year Sheila Ford stuck with it and told literally everyone that Dan was her guy and she was gonna stick by him.

That time of year when you can believe your team will magically become good. 😂

Momentum has to do with confidence, when you overthink, you make more mistakes, when you are confident you're going to do it right and be on target, you let your muscle memory take over and with all the practice and experience muscle memory generally will win over.

I sure hope so. We need help bad.

I been a raiders fan for 46 years. The chargers have always, always had tremendous talent and a very worthy adversary. With this coach and qb, i fear for the next 7 or 8 years. Im proud of our afc west rivalries and wouldnt trade or change it. As i got older my hatred has turned to respect. Cant wait to play chargers, denver and kc.

Momentum affects your mentality in the game that’s why it’s important. Adding more pressure to the pressure that already exist. If your defense gets a pick 6 that now ups the morale of the defense and the offense coming onto the field once again and puts pressure on the former present offense for making possibly a game defying mistake. It works like this in competitive setting wether that’s football, basketball, baseball, competitive gaming, hell even golf. So for them to write an article tryna use statistics or science behind why it doesn’t exist doesn’t relate to the reality that it does.

Sad to see what happened to Staley. I think he was a terrible coach, but I LOVED the aggressive 4th down decisions. As a chargers fan we saw coach after coach be way too passive with Phillip rivers. When you have Justin Herbert and Keenan Allen, you go for it. I do understand lombardis point tho, they did have one of the worst o lines I’ve ever seen

It does not reflect well on the players that when they have a coach who doesn't push them as hard, they slack off, and suddenly become "hard workers" under a new coach. Work should be self-motivated. If you can't work unless you have the right coach who has huge stature whom you can't hide from, you're just doing it because you don't want to get caught slacking.
