Rest in peace, Jim Kearney. When it came to this incident right here, you deserved better
After a lengthy career with the Kansas City Chiefs, safety Jim Kearney naturally thought that he'd be finishing his career in Kansas City. That's when the Chiefs decided to do something absolutely asinine in 1976 that left everyone scratching their heads, and understandably so, especially for the way that the entire situation was handled

First and foremost, I'm sorry for your loss. Not only was he a great player, I'm sure that he was a great Father as well. With that being said, do you have a cousin that grew up in Chicago ? The reason I'm asking, is because I used to work with him and his father Larry. Derek once said to me that your Dad was his uncle, seeing that you guys share the same last name. Please let me know. @stevendavis1733 Larry Kearney is my cousin. Larry lives in Atlanta. I'm not sure if he has a son living in Chicago. I'll find out and let you know.

I've seen enough expansion drafts to know how this process works and I like how my Buccaneers thought enough if Kearney to draft him in the 1976 edition. However, the Chiefs should've told him this could happen and I don't blame him for being upset about how this was handled. Also, how did he never get any all-star selections whatsoever?!

Very, likely, it became a case of the, NFL, deciding that the Chiefs, already, had, quite, enough of those, across innumerable positions, that is the very logic that, unfortunately, also applies to the, HOF, too sad.

Crazy how much the Chiefs fell off as the 70’s went on. Not a fan of theirs but I’m glad that people who have supported them for many years get to enjoy the current run they’re on. It was rough for awhile there.

The, Christmas, Marathon, against the Dolphins, was cruelly symbolic for both teams, simultaneously, the Chiefs would see Ed Podolak have a legendary run absolutely go to waste, and, their run end, meanwhile, the Dolphins began a run of three consecutive SBs, unfortunately, three short years later, The, Sea Of Hands Game, would rapidly finish the Dolphins off, as well, simple as that.

@jskipmo George Allen did, as well, and, while, it got him, (one), SB appearance, it didn't result in a win, and, they were quickly to become woefully inadequate, Bobby Beathard was way better in the practice of trading rather than drafting, once he left, unfortunately, they were rapidly to fall into a sustained period of total irrelevance, really, miserably, consistently, definitely a really great trip.

One thing I will say is the Chiefs owed all their unprotected players the same courtesy, whether it was a decade-long player like Kearney or a player who hadn’t been there long.

The chiefs treated Jim Kearney shabbily in the matter of the expansion draft-if they had told him they were leaving him unprotected-the thing would not stunk as it did-I hope they pay him a tribute as they did with abner Haynes yesterday in the preseason game they played-he needs it and deserves it! 👍👍👍👍👍👍🏈🏈🏈

The Detroit Pistons did the same thing to Rick Mahorn. In fact, they actually pulled him aside the day of their championship parade in 1989 to tell him that he was picked by the Minnesota Timberwolves in the expansion draft.

They were lucky he was the only player they lost in, The, Expansion Draft, the only other team to successfully defend a Championship the season following such a development, were, Toronto, in 1993, this was in addition to the fact that they kept losing pitchers, the only starters on both teams, were, Juan Guzman, and, Todd Stottlemyre, not exactly, Koufax, and, Drysdale.

Wow! Where and how do you find this stuff? I had never heard of him. To have that many pick 6"s and not make the Pro Bowl, in a 14 game season is as wrong as 2 left shoes! And to not have the decency to inform him that he's unprotected... That kind of durability is unheard of. The preseason and practices were grueling + the games. He didn't seem angry, he seemed hurt. He's was amazing.

Leaving a talent like that without a pro bowl nod is wild enough. But also letting him go the way they did is also pretty wild and all and all, flat out dirty. Definitely not the only kind of a sad case of a player not being treated with the respect they deserved but it’s always shitty to hear regardless on how old it is.

4:00 It looks like for the '72 Pro Bowl, Kearney got caught in a numbers game between the Dolphins' two safeties (Dick Anderson and Jake Scott) and Houston's Ken Houston, all of whom were fine players - Houston went into the HoF, and Anderson and Scott were part of the undefeated Dolphins' team that year. On balance of the three, just looking at the numbers Houston probably would have been the odd man out if Kearney were to get voted in - he had zero INTs in '72 - but KH'd had 9 INTs w/4 TD returns the previous season and was the incumbent at safety, and KC not making the playoffs that season probably didn't help Kearney's chances either. Just an unfortunate circumstance.

The two Dolphins players probably have been left out of the, HOF, because of the relative brevity of the, Dolphins', Dynasty, and, the fact that they think that there are, already, enough players enshrined from that team, two really tough situations, period.

Thanks for highlighting an often forgotten Chief. Most do not know that after his playing days he became a teacher in KCK. I disagree with your premise here. Why would a team share with players that they were being left off the protected list? Almost all were not picked up in the expansion draft and never knew if the team left them exposed or not. It sucked for JK and a few others but most of the players returned to their teams without the hard feelings that may have come from knowing that they were exposed to the draft.

While I 100% agree that they should’ve told him they weren’t going to protect him in the expansion draft I understand why they didn’t protect him. They simply didn’t think either the Bucs or the Seahawks would pick him. They took a gamble and it backfired. Unfortunately it happens. Look what the Colts did to Johnny Unitas and John Mackey. Look what the Rams did to Deacon Jones. I know those examples aren’t the same as Kearney’s at the end of the day they all ended their careers on different teams instead of where they should’ve. A question, is he in the Chiefs HOF? Did both sides mend fences after his career was over?

Yeah I want to make it clear with this that I have no problem leaving him unprotected by itself (even if the logic they used was horribly flawed). It was the fact that they didn't tell him a thing that was insane to me
