No excuse but they were live and everything behind the scenes was hectic, wrestlers crying and not knowing what to do and most of them didn't go to the hospital with Owen so they didn't know the outcome.

My Owen Hart story..My one and only wwe show I ever saw was given to me by owen hart. My dad was working for air canada in montreal. A flight was cancelled and he was given a list of passengers that could be transferred into another flight so not to miss destination. My dad saw his name and called him to the front desk and it was him. My dad bumped his ticket fron economie to first class and Owen asked why. So my dad explained the limited seat situation and that his son was a fan and he recognized him. So Owen took my dads info and told him on this day at the molson center in montreal you will have front row tickets...I don't remember the date I was 6 years old lol. My dad took some money because most famous people he saw never came through with what they promise. tickets never receive promised merch. But not him our names were on the list and we had our tickets. ....when going back to the states, they were leaving with air canada again and he saw my dad , he brought all the roster to his counter and I got an autograph of every wrestler on the card.
Awesome story dude. Owen did have a heart of gold. I have a similar story with the late wrestler Z Man Tom Zenk (WCW...died December 2017). I was vacationing in Florida with my parents and we stopped at this mall. While rushing toward a toy store I saw The Z Man doing something in front of a camera. I thought I was dreaming, but I ran toward him only to be haulted by security; yeah, a 10 yr. old can really hurt a 6 ‘5 230+ Man of muscle lol. Well Tom saw this, told security off, stopped what he was doing, and signed an autograph for me. Sadly I’ve lost it over the 25 years bridging then and now, but the memory lives forever. Yeah, some famous people still have loving hearts...it just broke mine hearing about Z Man’s death. He was only 59. Guess “only the good die young” is true after all.

Definitely the best play-by-play man in the history of wrestling. He and Jerry Lawler were great together, but it's a shame J.R. didn't get to work with Bobby Heenan more, who I believe was the greatest heel color commentator of all time. When Ross showed up at WWF Heenan was already on his way to WCW.

I think most wrestling fans want to and that’s the exact reason people are still asking JR and every other wrestling personality about it. Hell, look at how many views videos online about his death get because they have the word “real” in the title...despite it being common knowledge it will never be seen. People are still holding out hope that it will surface. There’s also the idiots that claim “I saw it on the PPV” or “I know someone who has the footage”, and people buy into it because they’ve become convinced that SOMEBODY (other than WWE) has to have it. People have also re-written history pertaining to that night. I’ve seen multiple people claim that Bulldog did a promo while Owen was dying in the ring and about how he had to try to act like nothing was wrong.
Lets not forget that this happened in 1999, which is 18 years ago. Back then, fans did not have phones and digital cameras that can record video like they can easily do today. This is why you will never find any video footage of the actual incident from a fan.
The reason there isn’t a video from the audience (that we know of) is only because nobody brought a video camera with them. Fans have been doing audience shots of house shows and PPVs since the 1980s, so the technology only has a small amount to do with it. There are hundreds available...WWE, WCW, NWA, ECW, etc. There’s a good amount on YT if you’ve never seen them.
I will never forget that night. I remember exactly where I was, I was 12 years old and watching the PPV in the basement. And Jim announced "I have the unfortunate responsibility to let everyone know that Owen Hart has died." I swear, I can still remember stopping in my tracks and my heart sank. Still gets me.
I was about 15 and I know that I felt so terrible. I hardly slept that night... didn't wanted to go to school but at the same time, I wanted to talk about his with my friends. A lot of my friends watched wrestling too and had to share with them. Some didn't hear about it and when we told them, they were shocked as hell. Everyone was confused and upset.
I cried into my own hands my sister looked at me with her jawed dropped as I heard on the news and Wow i was 12 too. I remember every moment I was having Sunday dinner at my grandmas and she always watched the news and I live in Canada it was still daylight out when it happened but maybe that’s because I’m in the pacific time zon it was something like 6:20 pm (for me) and I’ll never forget the guy anchor who said these words. “Tragic breaking news out of the worlld wrestling federation during their live PPV tonight I. Kansas City, a wrestler fell approximately 80 feet during a sting gone wrong to his death and we can confirm now that Canadian wrestler Kane Hart has died. More at seven” To that point in t flute I hadn’t cried over a death ever ..I cried the next night and even some nights that summer of 99 too I even put Owen pictures all over my wall from The wwf magazine

Talking about stone cold and the rock, they were given full creative freedom, so they could do and be whatever they want. I give all the credit in the world to them for their hardwork.

When this happened I wrote to the family a letter offering my condolences. I was 12 years old at the time. I remember sitting writing to the family in tears, for someone I’ve never met. I’ve had other deaths actually in my family and never did that. The tragedy changed me, and showed me that life is precious and it’s not promised. I grew up a lot that day.
I remember watching the first Raw show after his death and the tributes etc I can honestly say a part from the death of family members his death is the only time I have cried and I never met the guy

I met Owen once in 1988. He was the Blue Blazer then. This was in Philadelphia. His mannerisms and movement made me realize he was the Blazer. But being a HUGE Wrestling fan then...I already KNEW who He was. I approached him introduce myself told him I knew who he was and that I knew he was the Blue Blazer. He said yes! 😀. Which at that time was basically breaking kayfabe. He talked to me for a minute or two and was very kind and gracious. I can't believe it's been almost 20 years since he's gone. Rest in peace Rocket King...🙏
You could tell it was him by his nose and bottom half of his face, and his stature. I didn't know who Owen was at the time; but when he came back and started wrestling as himself, I guessed it right away.
I was there that night. The professionalism of the WWE crew kept us kids in the audience from finding out we'd just watched a man die and keep a panic from happening. Instead we got to watch a pretty good show and find out the truth when we got home with our parents where we could discuss and process the event properly. I'll always appreciate the professionalism of the WWE crew.

Joseph Santiago yeah it was really a sad thing i always loved the whole brett/owen feud that lead to WM10 but i think the whole heel hart famliy before brett left was possibly the peak of pro wrestling story telling. Man i hope his career gets the spotlight it deserves someday. RIP Owen.

I was in 6th grade at the time and that was DEFINITELY the talk of 70% of the whole school that Monday after his passing.
That waa also shocking that I heard about Owen Hart's death back in 1999. I didn't watch the "Over the Edge" pay per view, until the next night on "Raw is War" when the superstars were just lining up to pay tribute to Owen. I had no idea that he die on that night. It was just so emotional that I didn't watch the show until next Monday. But yes, I couldn't agree more JR.
owen hart was one of my favs ever, being a younger brother i liked him ore then bret for that...and i havent watched over the edge since i saw it live on ppv and when i found out he died i cried because i couldnt believe what happend and i didnt want it to be true. still very sad and it upsets me more he never won the wwf title

Same here! I used to watch Raw in french back then cause my english wasn't good yet. The french Raw was either really late on Wednesday nights (like 11pm or something, I was barely 15 back then) or Saturday mornings. So I usually went online on this french website to find out what happened at PPVs. I'll always remember that Monday morning at the library computer reading about Owen's death and having to hold it in cause I didn't want to be seen crying in public. And then going to my biology class and this teacher, who never really spoke to me before, took me aside and told me he knew I was a wrestling fan and asked me about Owen cause he didn't know the details. I almost cried just telling him the story. He made me sit in the back and told me to just keep quiet and do whatever I want as long as I wasn't too obvious to the others. If that was hard for me, I can't imagine how hard it must've been for guys that really knew him personally. Guys like Bret Hart and Davey Boy and Mick Foley and JR.
JR was the guy that bridged the relationships from talent to management. He got to see the talent from their days in developmental to superstardom. He had 10 seconds to watch and process the death of one of his finest and nicest superstars and was told to get back to work before ever grieving such a huge loss. That’s tough man.☠️☠️
There's actually a word for it. It's called 'Schadenfreude' - taking pleasure out of the pain and suffering of others. And it's not something to be proud of if you feel like that when you see others suffer.
There’s NO WAY to prepare to tell the entire world that a wrestler has died with 10 seconds until they go back on air... like having nanoseconds to process with the news you JUST RECEIVED and getting ready to tell the world.. I think they should’ve let JR digest the news and give an update within the next two matches
JR hit the nail on the head about Owen. Owen I always felt was one of the most underrated superstars of his time who should have been WWE champion. Entertaining as hell and played the heel like no one could, loved him to death and his brother rivalry with Bret was some of the best angles in wrestling history from 2 pure wrestlers along with the reformed Hart Foundation remembering the Canada and the world against America angle in 97. There was not a bad thing you could say about him which shows how much he was loved by his peers, fans, family, he touched so many. It's unheard of to hear not a negative thing was said of this man. JR in my eyes and opinion is the greatest wrestling announcer that ever lived over 40 plus years in the business

What it was like with the job he had to do. I’m sure the exact dialogue wasn’t he’s dead your back in 10, because those 10 9 happen every match pre match interview etc but when he got the news quick how else is Kevin Dunn allowed to Break it for JR in any other way, he wa telling JR it’s now need to Make the announcement jr says no one told Me and Kevin Dunn then said likely he didn’t make it he passed or he did die, and then the count down. As I watched this I was searching for the next thing I was going to watch, and I found it relatively quickly, and there was still about a minute left. I put my phone down and let JR finish what he was saying. I respect the man that much.
The crazy thing is Jim Ross told me this story before. He's an Oklahoman and comes here alot. Met him a few times at sooner games. A real genuine guy. You can feel what he felt that day when he mentions it. And you know the craziest about it all? That was my 13th birthday. My parents let me watch that match on tv as a present.... I'll never forget it......
I met Owen and Davey Boy in the Toronto Airport in 1993.Owen flashed a smile and was genuinely interested in talking with me.He was so nice and very polite which says alot about how his parents raised him.A true gentleman.

Jim, you basically have narrated my entire life. I listened to you as a kid, growing up near Charlotte, back in the 80s. As a teen in the 90s, and still today as an adult even though I've lost touch with the business. I can't watch a single RU-vid video from days gone by that you aren't there to call the match. And, that's exactly the way I want it.

I was a WWE fan as a teenager. I live in the U.K. so I’d have to tape the PPVs as they would be on from 1am - 4am local time. The only tape that ever failed to record in the 6 or 7 years I was a die hard fan was that one. I’m glad I never got to see it. Rest in Power Owen, and to all the staff at the WWE who were working that night I’m truly sorry you had to experience it.
i remember having to watch ppv’s through a scrambled channel (no cable, parents didn’t allow me to watch the wwf, sometimes a solid five mins of audio would come through) after a long patch of scrambled images and no audio i saw the inverted image of jr and king and then the audio kicked in for me to hear their announcement about owen. sad shit. owen left us way too soon.
Hearing his recount of it hurts my heart and soul. I've always wished they had cancelled the rest of the show (I actually ordered the ppv and was watching, thankfully we didnt see it on ppv). I can't even imagine how hard that would be to just have to process it and go back on the air like nothing happened. Unreal. Good ol' JR deserved better

B Ogletree I wasn't alive for Owens death. I was in my mother's stomach. My mom told me that when I was in her belly and she went to watch raw that night and they said Owen passed away, she said I started kicking here stomach really hard. But I was alive for Eddie and Benoit. Eddie broke me. I was 6. We shared a birthday, he was my idol. I had no idea untill I got on the bus and a 5th grader told me Eddie died. I didn't believe him until I saw Raw that night. I broke down. I still do to this day when I watch the tribute show
I still remember when Owen died. Seeing it on the news about a professional wrestler falling to his death. And the shock I felt when I saw that it was Owen Hart. I wonder how shocked Jim Ross was about the whole Chris Benoit situation. That HAD TO shock him just as much.
@@justprimo2 we saw some people messing about in the rafters but a promo was playing on the titantron and most people were watching it. Suddenly this blue blur fell from the rafters, bounced off the ropes narrowly missing the turnbuckle and a sickening thud as he hit the mat. Me and my friends to this day still swear he stuck his head up for a moment as if to say I'm ok or ask for help. As an adult I realize it might have been a death throe or some weird spastic thing but as a result most of us in the audience thought he was hurt not dead. I think he coughed up some blood too. I was a kid so my memory is fuzzy. Some guy ran from the ring to get help and the paramedics came and got him. It was around this time we realized it wasn't a part of the show probably. The incredible professionalism of the crew made us kids in the audience not dwell on it and didn't even find out he was dead until we got home. Thanks to that we were able to process what we'd just seen in the comfort of our homes instead of starting a panic in a packed arena with crying children and angry parents. Kudos to the WWE for sure, though it never should have happened in the first place.

As a wrestling fan who can ever forget that night. I remember like yesterday the next night on Monday night raw when they paid tribute to Owen Heart not one person that I was watching it with didn’t hold back from crying. I remember years later at a Texas Longhorns practice having a conversation with Dustin Runnels aka Gold Dust and I’ll tell you one thing, the emotions that he showed broke my heart and how bad it really was and how it took a toll on him the following night when he was scheduled to wrestle and he walked out with tears in his eyes and couldn’t do it.
It's one of those things where you don't realize how great someone is as both a wrestler and a man, until they're gone. I can honestly say I loved watching Owen in his promos because he actually made them seem realistic that he despised someone in his feuds.

well he didn't have much choice...people needed to know and it's his job to be trained on how to handle the unexpected. How much time do you think he had when Owen fell? or how do you think he calls a match? he reacts to what happens with little prep. Frankly that's basically how news today works. Have you not ever seen a "BREAKING NEWS" banner come across your screen and the announcer proceed to tell you what happened? They're not prepped beforehand (that's why it's "BREAKING NEWS"...it's just happened)

I remember that night like it happened yesterday. I was attending a private boarding school at the time, and normally I would have been back at the school by the time the show would start, but the next day was a holiday, so I could stay home that night, which made it stick out that much more. I still think of it to this day. RIP Owen. You were a great guy!
Way back in 2000-2001 there was a low quality clip running around on Limewire of 4 seconds of footage that showed Owen falling. It was a pixeled low quality clip of Owen falling but when he hits the side of the ring someone's head blocks most of the camera recording. I saw it circa 2001 and a now non-existent web site "ogrish. com" had it for a bit and another one named "rotten. com" did too but they would get taken down quick. WWE has vanished any footage and it is near impossible to find.
I agree with JR. Everyone wants to know about the "calamity" of the business. The "shock and awe" incidents that have taken place. Listen folks, this business is tough and i mean TOUGH AND ALSO ROUGH...!!! Not only in the obvious spectrum of the physicality but sometimes even more so MENTALLY. What these men and women endure for our enjoyment is PURE dedication and sacrifice on there parts. They are human beings we tend to forget this and think of them as superheros which THEY ARE NOT...!!! Accidents and deaths happen I.E. Owen Hart and MANY others TOO MANY to name here. It's almost a given that this industry will claim you in some way, shape, or form and not always for the good. This is why in the 25yrs i've not only been a fan but done ticket sales for many local Indy events where i reside. The very FIRST thing i do is PAY MY RESPECT and APPRECIATION for what these men and women do to entertain our fans at our shows. I don't care whose booked on our cards THEY ALL get treated with respect, dignity, and appreciation for there work in entertaining us. Because i know many of them have families and would rather be spending time with them. But there passion and heart for this business is so deep there never home for long. Before there back in that squared circle. If there is one thing i can tell you about pro wrestling is the men and women in this profession aren't complainers...!!! They don't bitch about going to work everyday sure there are some prick promoters out there you know who you are and shall remain nameless. But for the most part these men and women enjoy this business there livelihood so much it takes someone VERY VERY dedicated as a spouse, or girlfriend/boyfriend etc...to understand what there getting involved in. Because there partners who are in this business are married to there professions i always like to say. It's really all they know and usually they can't or simply won't stay home for very long unless there truly injured and need to rehab. And even then there usually not home...!!! Long story short here, the next time your at an indy show or mainstream TNA OR WWE show please give them your respect. You may not think it means much but TRUST ME it means THE WORLD to them. Many of them will stay "in character" so if there a heel you probably won't get a thank you. But TRUST ME they will appreciate it folks.
I was not born when it was live but I was going to watch some old raw episodes but I stopped at this one because I saw the fall and thought holy crap. Jim Ross handled this like a champ
I remember as a kid hearing about Owen Hart passing on Tv back in the 90s. I remember playing this game back on PS1 called WWF Warzone. I would always pick Owen, Taker and Stone Cold. When I saw this man picture on the news and I looked at my mom and told her "Hey that's the man in my video game" that was the day and night I found out he died... Rest In Peace....
Zak Selbert : check out Stone Cold’s pod casts (now uploaded to RU-vid). I’ve never heard him say a bad thing about Owen, other than the pile driver was botched which was true. Also JR and Steve are very good friends in real life. So I think JR knows what he’s talking about. JR got Stone Cold to come back to WWE when he didn’t show up for work for about six months because they wanted him to drop the belt to Shawn Michaels. Point is, Stone Cold might have been pissed at getting his neck broken, who wouldn’t be, but he didn’t feel that Owen did it on purpose and didn’t wish him dead. Steve, is good friends with Bret, and was with the other Hart family members (bulldog , the anvil, and Owen) before they passed.
I wanted to Meet Jim Ross so bad during tribute to the troops. Never got lucky enough. Everyone watched wrestling for the wrestling talent and I watched to enjoy Jim Ross and his voice talent.
i remember watching the PPV live on cable and it cutting to the crowd. it was weird because nothing was being said and then later the news broke and i was devastated. it was horrible. RIP Owen.
Martha Hart, his wife doesn't want Owen Hart associated with the WWE. She even won't allow the company to mention him in a positive light. it really sucks.
I watched that match so sad they forgot to hook up his harness what dummies. When he jumped he wasn't even hooked up !!!! He was the blue blazer at that time. I remember seeing him hit the ropes and bounce!! Oh man on live t.v.
ive watched a handful of events over the years be it Owen's accident or more recently the death of an Aston Martin factory driver Allen Simonsen during the 24h of Le Mans and the show must go on. Its the way of the business.
