It was a mess. Shawn Michaels said that Vince McMahon already had the idea for doing a screwjob and was just waiting for someone to bring it up first and that was Triple H who got pissed off at Bret for not wanting to do business the right way. Jim Cornette unwittingly gave Vince McMahon the idea for the finish. Cornette stated and I quote: "He had not used any of my finishes in months and the one time I did not want McMahon to use my finish, he does and that's why I beat Referee Earl Hebnar out of the building that night".

i lovvvvvve the ending to SS’97. “boy, you walk about controversy…” - JR, as hbk walks off fake angry, briscoe running up to the side of him, escorting him out, telling him to keep walking. throw the belt in the air in victory… camera pans up to the logo and FADE TO BLACK.

These guys are such marks, taking what they observed at face value. Among other things, Vince McMahon didn't get a concussion from "the punch". How many concussions is he supposed to take? He received concussion-like head injuries from Randy Orton in 2009 and from The Big Show in 2012.
