Jimi Hendrix was the greatest rock star guitarist ever. This is Jimi at the peek of his power at Woodstock showing the world how it’s done. He had no competitors because no one ever came close to matching him. He was on a different plateau. His legacy will remain forever.
The entire sequence--a Voodoo Child/Stepping Stone medley, segueing into the National Anthem, then to Purple Haze, then an absolutely transcendent improvisation, then finishing with Villanova Junction Blues, is one of the most brilliant in history.
The coda after Purple Haze @3:24 is on the level of Ornette Coleman's Free Jazz theories. Hendrix tears loose from the strictures of time and modality and SOARS. I like to listen to it at .75 speed, again and again. Frightening, really.
The greatest live version of Purple Haze extant. And, the ''coda'' starts @3:24 is beyond transcendent. He is playing at the highest levels of ''free jazz''- the rhythm section just STOPS and stand there with there mouths hanging open. It is a victory of the human spirit. Try going to 3:24 and cutting the YT speed to .75 and even .5 to wrap your head around what he is doing. The powerful and ''warm'' (no other way to describe) sound he's getting is probably due to the amps and PA being pushed almost to failure. Heard this when I was 15, and 45 years latter, I'm STILL studying the composition. It compares with Parker, Coltrane, and Coleman, at their best. Seriously, listen to the coda at .75 speed for a couple of times! Feed your head!
@@robertreyes4243 I don't think that's cheesy at all. It is a pretty accurate description of his music. He used a lot of space imagary in his lyrics as well
My dad saw it! I keep trying to see if I can see him in the crowd, but I honestly don’t even know if I would recognize him if I did see him 😝 I wasn’t alive back then… not for awhile after this 😅
At 1:20 they are trying to figure out what is going on here??? LOL They have never ever seen anything like it and never will, Jimi was a force of nature.
Before Janie shuts you down, I want to thank you for posting this. I hope "Purple Haze" from Woodstock is the last thing I hear when it's my time to go.
I uploaded this originally to my actual youtube channel and it had half a million views in 1 month before being pulled down. The legal argument I used this time is valid. This recording was made over 50 years ago so copyright no longer exists. www.youtube.com/@TerryJonesPrinterRepairs/videos
@@TerryJonesPrintersMusicVideos LOL nope! It's generally 70 years after the creators death (good luck arguing that one), regardless you've got Rage/ABC logos all over it and most definitely don't own the rights to this.
@@daverichards9141I’m going to guess it’s one of Jimi’s relatives who has the rights to his music. Hendrix music seems to get taken down often due to copyright. I could be wrong though I’m not positive.
@@Hew_Reese Yes, I was referencing Jimi's step-sister, Janie (I've also heard half-sister), who heads up Experience Hendrix LLC. Even though she only ever met Jimi once. And she does have a reputation for being litigious.
I know some of these clothing pieces are in museums but I’m sure some of them exist somewhere and whoever owns them probably doesn’t realize what they have.. crazy thing to think about
I was only two years old at the time Woodstock was going on ! I guarantee you though ..I would have been there if I had a ride! If I could go back in time(but not be two yrsold) I would choose Woodstock!
I have this entire Gig performance on VHS and a few others one being Montreal , does anyone know if its possible to transfer my VHS version to the Digital Domain and clean it up a little ? , I did this with some of my Vinyl Record's with a Turntable which had a USB output and used Software to just get rid of some of the Crackle , I did not enhance the sound of the Vinyl as I didn't want to loose the warmth of the Vinyl Record's.
The entire performance is already available on DVD but the transfer whilst clear/sharp and at 720p has poor colour rendition (distinct loss of Blue) due to the film either degrading or lousy film stock.
A lot of times, people don't understand the greatness they are witnessing. However, I have heard so many interviews from McCartney and Clapton and many others and the evidence to back it up that when Hendrix arrived, those who knew greatness knew that was Hendrix. They knew this was something special, something very different from your average guitar player. This man was on a completely other level. So many people knew it.
Yeah, true. Unbelievable guitar player. Way ahead of his time. Last song really touched the soul. Loved the melody and how he incorporated blues into it. Yeah, my conspiracy theory took over the 100th time I heard and watched this. That’s all folks.
