I remember when this happened. On Racehub they played Jimmie's in car camera and you could hear JPM get on the gas first then Jimmy then hear Jimmy lift. JPM spun the tires. Jimmy asked NASCAR to check the telemetry but they didn't

let me you in a little secret, they all speed on pit road, that is why they are always talking about timing lines, and when they move the timing lines so many people get busted. Even when the Tack does turn red it just means its over the set speed, Green has 5 dots and when the 5th dot is on, any more and the tack turns red.

ah, Clint Bowyer, (look at other camera angles this one you cant tell) then he checked up so hard that it almost wrecked Brad Keselowski and Jeff Gordon. Tony Stewart was in the back on Montoya (physically pushing) all the way into turn 1. Furthermore Clint Bowyer had gotten back by Montoya by turn 2. TBH the only reason Montoya was going anywhere was because Tony Stewart was pushing him.

1st place is in charge of the restart. if he spun the tires the other cars would had piled into each other and he would had been passed by many. not just the next inside car. rules are rules and 48 team broke the rules and finally got punished for it.

Iif you listen to the engine, he was still accelerating the length of the front straight, not letting off the gas till into corner one. He may not be at full throttle, but he was still speeding up. NASCAR has telemetry in the cars that show throttle, brake, rpm, speed and gear selection. Why not just view that data to see throttle position? The sound of his engine down the back straight sounded just like it did down the front straight as well. He even upshifted twice after taking the green.
@Racewayelko
@Racewayelko 11 лет назад
Technically, he is the leader and can do whatever he wants at that stage in the restart, it is called strategy. I'm sorry that people have other ways of winning besides cheating.. Not a montoya fan but have to give him props for that.
@webduelist
@webduelist 11 лет назад
its not that it doesn't apply, it that there are exceptions to that rule, for example if the leader spins his tires really badly on the restart. Montoya was also in third place going into turn 2. Do you know what would happen if Jimmie just slammed on this brakes or slowed down enough to let Montoya past by the time they got to turn 1, he would be a rolling road block.

they did, Stewart was pushing Montoya into turn 1 which is the only reason Montoya was going anywhere and they didn't stack up worse then what they did. Also look at other camera angles where Clint Bowyer checked up so hard that it almost took out Brad Keselowski and Jeff Gordon.
@StreamwoodExplorer
@StreamwoodExplorer 11 лет назад
They could've. Without an issue. Bowyer even said in his post-race interview that he had just enough time to "slam on his brakes." It's pretty obvious to tell how much he tried to slow the field down and then, he spun his tires when the RPM's jumped from how low he had them bringing the field down. Shows the race One Pablo is by refusing to go back by Jimmie. Knew there was no other way he would stay ahead of him, guess he played it right, just glad he still got his ass handed to him by Tony

Why would he upshift twice if he was "feathering" the throttle? Feathering means trying to maintain a speed, rpm is definitely increasing, and increasing enough to require an upshift. The sound of the engine accelerating is near identical to the sound going down the backstretch as well. As for Johnson saying he let up after start line but Montoya would not pass him, it is odd that no one else could manage to pass him either.

They did pile into eachother. The only reason Montoya wasn't in 5th place in turn 1 was because Bowyer checked up so.hard that it almost caused a huge wreck. Also think about it, the radio communication clearly shows they felt they were faster, they had no reason to cheat, why would they say "we are faster" then cheat anyways. I don't care if it had been Kyle Busch being penalized, or any driver for that matter, the evidence show Montoya was having a problem and it was a bad call

The call had nothing to do with whether or not JJ let off the gas lol. He was not the leader, therefore was not his restart to govern. He simply went to early, no different than a runner in a 100 meter dash having a false start. He jumped early, giving the spot back is not relevant to the issue.

No it's not clear because there's too much grey area with the restart area being a box and not just a single line. NASCAR needs to paint a line on the track and say, "When you get to this line the green flag drops and you go, if you're the leader and you spin the tires or get some other form of bad restart, oh well".
@MichaelBarrJr
@MichaelBarrJr 11 лет назад
How can you say that...clearly JJ was ahead of JPM before they even got to the end of the restart box... the rule is clear for every driver...you can pass the leader if the leader does not get going AFTER the restart box...JJ was about 3 feet ahead of JPM before that...therefore... PENALTY

I've always heard the rule was on starts and restarts, the leader must take the green first, the second place driver has to wait for the leader to go. montoya being the leader, spun tires or not, did not take the green (cross the line) first, Johnson did. and there lies the penalty. I know it's hard to give the position back in Johnsons case, but a penalty is a penalty is a penalty..

NASCAR penalizing Jimmie Johnson for that restart was a horrible call. Just because Montoya couldn't get going shouldn't mean that Jimmie Johnson should have to let off the throttle to allow Montoya to get traction. Do you think the pack of cars behind them would've let off the trottle if Johnson would have done that? There's an easy way to get hit from behind and put into the wall during the restart. NASCAR needs to think these things through.

Since after the 2013 season I have been a fan of Jimmie Johnson, replacing Jeff Gordon (number one) and Dale Earnhardt, Jr. (number three). So what happened here was when Johnson was my second favorite driver. Either way, I still approve of NASCAR's call. Johnson accelerated (although it didn't sound to me like he had the petal to the floor) prior to reaching the restart box, then didn't give back first place. I saw multiple places he could have slowed down at without being hit from behind. I'm not sure why he didn't try harder but ultimately I don't approve of any rule infractions so therefore I don't approve of what he did. From listening from what he had to say, I don't believe he was lying but I think it is clear from NASCAR's decision to have him give up the spot that he didn't try hard enough to give first place back.
