Tina Turners manager was an Australian so she did have a connection to Australia in the earlier stages of her career after leaving Ike (former husband). Tina was in the Mad Max movie shot here in Australia so she was fairly familiar with Australia. Her manager was approached by a Rugby League Club to help promote this sport. Long story short ‘Simply the Best’ was decided and Jimmy Barnes and his brother in-law (Diesel) were flown out to UK to cut this track (version) with Tina. Jimmy was a major fan of Tina’s so this was one of Jimmy’s career’s best moment. This song is very synonymous with our sport (Rugby League). As others have alluded to they struck a good chemistry as their voices paired perfectly, not out stripping each other but complimenting one another. RIP Tina ❤

There’s a video called “What it was like to work with Tina Turner” where Jimmy discusses the experience. They definitely became good friends. Jimmy idolised her growing up.

Amazing reaction!!!! This has always been my favourite Tina song but hearing it with Jimmy Barnes has blown me away. Such a beautiful song, such a beautiful duet is incredible. David Bowie made a famous quote after he did a performance with her and he said "Standing up there next to her was the hottest place in the universe." I guess that is the way anyone who had the honour of performing with Tina was thinking the same thing. Thank you for this rare piece of heaven..

Her manager was an Australian (Roger Davies) and from 1989 to 1995, Turner was the face of the New South Wales Rugby League (NSWRL) competition, now rebranded the National Rugby League (NRL), with this song, appearing alongside the game’s most famous athletes in national commercials, and sometimes on the ground for the sport’s showpiece events, including a set during the 1993 grand final at the Sydney Football Stadium.

This duet became a classic in Australia and Tina’s solo version of Simply The Best became the NRL Theme back in the 80’s. She was very much loved in Australia and had a feature role in Mad Max - Beyond Thunderdome which was filmed in Australia

Such a great duo

This was such a fantastic duet and their two voices blend so great together. This is of course Tina’s original song and back then the Australian Rugby League asked Tina to use the song in their campaign to promote the Rugby League. She did it originally with one of her earlier songs which was a hit and then The Best just took it to another level. She single handed elevated the face of NRL in Oz to a massive audience. She is a superstar! Then a few years later Jimmy did this duet with her (along with the fabulous Diesel on guitar), also part of the Rugby League’s promotional campaign. The NRL are doing a tribute to her this year and to commemorate 30 years since she performed at the grand final! Some more from Aussie Jimmy Barnes. Who wouldn’t be? She’s great. My favourite harmony with Jimmy is when he sings with another soul Queen, Renee Geyer, who passed on 17th January this year RIP. My goodness ❤❤❤❤❤❤ By the way the Guitarist is Mark Lizotte aka Johnny Diesel or just Diesel who had a band too called Johnny Diesel and the Injectors. He sang lead and played the guitar. He’s brilliant too, and married Jimmy’s wife’s sister, so is Jimmy’s brother in law. He was born in America and moved to Australia when he was younger. Spent some time growing up in Western Australia (WA) before heading East as bands do to make it. He is an excellent artist too. By the way, Tina was in the Mad Max beyond the Thunderdome movie and that was filmed here too with Mel Gibson and Gary Anderson (known as Angry Anderson) who is the lead singer of Rose Tattoo, an Australian rock band from the 70’s.

Jimmy was terrified to sing with Tina, he is a huge fan but ended up sitting on the floor with her for 2 days eating Thai food. Said it was amazing.

Tina Turner and Australia have been very close love for decades.... like almost every finale of every aussie wedding reception, school dance, community fete (festival) and playground exercise does the "Nutbush City Limits" line dance as the aussie's compulsory macarena since the 80s ongoing to present (for some odd reason uniquely Australian to know and do from child to adult and no where else in the world not even America).... and she is chosen by the aussies to be the face of Australia’s rugby league and chose her song "simply the best" as the rugby league theme.... her manager is australian (roger davies) since from the late 70s.... she is also Aunty Entity (Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome) with Mel Gibson who consider himself more Australian... her CDs, concerts and fan base are very high in Australia specially among the middle age women population.... she always said of aussies love for her and her special love for Australia....

Jimmy said he was never nervous to perform, but he was this time. NOT because of Tina it was because he was supposed to dance. He I dance like an elephant tied to a tree 🌳. Tina said Don Worry I'll make you look good and she did. And don't forget the guitar solo by Disel (Jimmy's brother inlaw).

It was just called 'The Best' when Tina did it on her own, they changed it to 'Simply The Best' for the duet version.

This was the theme song for the NRL Simply the best and What you see is what you get , she was doing NRL commercials between 1989 and 1994 look at the old NRL commercials when Tina mixes with the players .

When it came to Tina Turner and Jimmy Barnes these two are the heavy weights of vocalists. Some of the most powerful voices EVER. If your family with Rugby League in Australia, Tina Turner became the face of rugby league in the early 90’s. If you get a chance please have a look because that advertising campaign was a turning point for the sport.

The guitar player is Jonny Diesel the Brothe in Law of Jimmy. He is a great blues singer in his own right.

In the 70's and 80's Tina, along with many other great artists and bands of the time, toured Australia regularly. In Sydney for e.g. we have a network of sporting clubs, they all have poker machines which affords subsidized facilities including up-market venues, food, drinks and entertainment, in may suburbs throughout the major cities. Tina has stated in interviews how she restarted her career when approached by an Australian entrepreneur after some stunning performances at (specifically) the St George Leagues Club located Sydney's SSW. I had booked a table for this-dinner show close to the stage and was with my girlfriend at the time and three of her British Airways flight attendant buddies and one other other couple. Tina's show was tight and powerful. I was over the moon about this great show/ performance and expressed myself eagerly, which unfortunately attracted the ire/ jealousy of my partner at the time. Tina paused the show to acknowledge the audience and said that she really "appreciated the attention, but perhaps some girlfriends or partners may get annoyed at their guy's enthusiasm" as she looked in our direction. Tina concluded by saying, "... so I'd like to say that my next song is for you", and pointed directly at me. And yep, I was smitten. "Key Largo" was the number she chose, a romantic hit-tune released by Bertie Higgins in the States, Sept 1981. Lyrics like, "We had it all / Just like Bogie and Bacall / Starring in our own late late show / Sailin' away to Key Largo." It literally felt 'like an arrow' go thru my heart. Man, I floated out of that place on a high like no other. It was about this time that she accepted the offer of her new Australian manager... and the rest 'as they say is history'. And Jimmy and Tina together, they were, 'simply the best'... R.I.P. Tina. Cheers from Sydney AU. ♥

Did you notice the clothing attire on how they were both dressed, same colours but worn differently Top/Bottom and Bottom/Top. You should seek out the video of Tina doing Simply the Best as a promotion for the National Rugby League (NRL) in Australia in the late 1980's -90's, where she also performed the song at the Grand Final in the 1990's.

This was a mix recorded for the Australian Rugby League. She was only too happy to promote the game, so was Jimmy.

Tina first released this in 1989 on her own. She teamed up with Jimmy for the remake to promote Rugby League here in Australia in 1992.

The only person Jimmy has matched his voice to instead of trying to drown them out.

I just want to point out that John Diesel (a legend, in his own right) was the guitarist it this epic duet.

It was originally just Tina's song. The NRL in Australia originally used Tina's version to promote the football and years later they got her back again to use her song but this time she did a cover with Jimmy. The guitarist is Diesel.

Barnes is great at duets - he can do it with anyone, any material and he can do it ad lib too if you checkout this thing where he invites artists to his lounge room to sing the first song that they recorded or performed that was important to them. But in this instance he is doing it with a woman who inspired him and he admired, as we all do in Australia, but also a woman who is his singing twin. They kind of sound the same!😊 it’s criminal that Tina Turner only achieved the success she achieved outside of her own country but that’s down to Ike’s influence I guess. What an arse!
