We're at Brands Hatch once again, but this time in my new car - a 2002 Honda S2000 - as we take to the track and get some tuition by Jimmy Broadbent on how to tackle slippery conditions and drive fast. I also tell you a bit more about my plans with the car!
Just to be clear, Jimmy isn’t a qualified instructor or anything but he does have a lot more experience than me, so it was great to get some advice on how to go quicker!

Tom, near the end of the video, you make the decision not to go back out again. Doesn't matter if it's rain, heat, fatigue, fuel remaining, oil temps; if you feel like it's time to call it a day, you're always right.

The sloppy shifter is a known S2000 problem, there is a really good video from "LHT Performance" on how to fix it an make the shifting MUCH better.

That was a fun watch. Jimmy sounded like a freaking pro instructor. Also loved the sound of that thing screaming at high revs. Looking forward to the mods.

Really enjoyed the video mate, love an S2000! Bet you find a load of speed straight away when you next go out, now you know the car a bit more and know where the limits are with it. Definitely found the same after my first few track days. Break through the scary moments and plow on! Will hopefully be out myself later in the year with the battered MX-5 post some tinkering

Having someone like Jimmer around to coach you is a really valuable asset, he could help you extract the most from the S2000, as they're very competent cars when driven right. Also, I'd advise replacing the valve retainers for the improved version from the F22 engine, the F20 retainers can crack if the engine is ever over revved, and that leads to total engine failure, so for a couple hundred £ and a day's work it's worth doing, I'll be doing it before I go on track in mine.

Not sure if you can get them with the supply shortages but with some Hankook RS4s, you can push the S2k in the wet pretty well. They are very predictable and confidence inspiring.

Need to be getting a bit sideways, liked that!! I sprint/hillclimb an s2000 in roadgoing class around the South East if you need any tips on mods or set-up. Will be at Lydden later in the year too.

Paint codes mate. Gloss = slippery, Matte = grip. Then just play connect the dots from Matte to Matte. Like Jimbo say get used to it sliding and catching it, I'd recommend throwing it to SEE if you can catch it

S2K's look like death traps from the videos ive watched haha, the snappy oversteer looks like it'll bite you in the arse. Didn't they remedy this on the later models or am I thinking of the MR2?

You missed an opportunity when the rain started, you should have gone out and done a couple of granny laps then slowly increased your pace to get a feel for car control, it’s easier to learn at low speed. And: "if you don’t spin you’re not trying hard enough" - just try not to do it when there are other cars around!

Does tom actually play car games or sim race???? just wondering if tom did play with a wheel like jimmy he would know where to push car and how fast the car can be pushed in a sim?? i know a sim isnt actually real life but surely it would give tom the confidence and the knowledge of the corners?? i mean didnt kaz learn the nurb on GT and then competed in the real life 24hrs??? in a gtr no less with other real life racers??!!!
