I was only old enough to remember to Jimmy during the Saint n Greavsie days. I'll always remember him saying coming down into Burnley you couldn't see it, the smog only went away once every 10 years. You'll meet many a Burnley fan, my dad included, who would tell you that Jimmy was the greatest player they ever saw. I've been watching many a video of Jimmy in his heyday these past couple of days, a lump in my throat at his passing, one of the last great links of football from an increasingly bygone era. May the world never forget you Jimmy, a true genius of the art of football, to so many, the best. Rest in peace.

Jimmy Greaves sad passing has to be remembered by me. I began supporting Spurs around the time of the double. Without question Jimmy Greaves is the greatest goal scorer ever. In those days defenders were allowed to tackle from behind. Footballers like Greaves were physically assaulted every game with one horrific tackle after another. Greaves would have two, three even four opposing players focused on putting him out of the game. Only Pele, I remember got treated in the same way. This focus on Greaves created goal scoring opportunities for other players in the team in particular the wily Alan Gilzean. Very few of Greaves matches were ever filmed. The goal shown against Manchester United in the video is rare footage. The way he discards maybe half the United team on his mazy run-on goal to score so effortlessly was typical Greaves. He rarely played in perfect conditions like today’s footballers. Sun dried and hard, or a rain sodden quagmire, or snow-covered frozen pitches were pretty much the norm. With a ball that got heavier as it got wetter. The great European and South American players were and are playing in less competitive easier leagues than he was. For them many softer games with easy scoring opportunities. Without question George Best, Pele and Di Stefano were breath-taking footballers of his generation and playing time. Of today’s footballers Messi and Ronaldo obviously come to mind but would they have been able to go back in time and score as freely as Greaves did in the conditions. We can only speculate but surely Jimmy would have been able to come forward into the easier playing conditions of today and still score more goals than anyone else - would he have doubled the amount? We’ll never know. Has there been a better goal scorer than Jimmy Greaves in the history of the game in their prime? At his best he seemed to float through games absolutely on another level. At 25 years of age, he lost maybe a year with hepatitis and the recovery from it. This probably cost him a yard in pace. But still he kept scoring. At 31 he had retired. Ronaldo has only recently broken one of his records at age 35. The sign of greatness is when it is made to look so easy you think you can do it. Jimmy Greaves made the game look that easy. He was a footballing genius the like of which we are unlikely to see again.

The greatest player to ever wear the shirt. My father was there for all those games in the 60’s and had deep affection for many of the players on that great team. Mackay, Blanchflower, Cliff Jones, John White, to name a few. But none compared to the awe and reverence in his voice when he spoke of Greaves. He idolised him. It wasn’t just his incredible goal scoring ability, his intelligence and flair on the pitch, but his charm and aura off the pitch as well. Rest well Jimmy. I’m sad I never got to see you in your heyday but your memories and legend live on forever. 💙

I grew up watching Jimmy Greaves, Dennis Law. Best. Eusebio. Bobby Moore. Pelè described Greaves as "the most naturally gifted footballer I've ever seen" Puskàs. Bobby Charlton. They played very oftern on heavy muddy grounds, with soaking wet footballs & still managed pure magic.
