@Tom Smith ~ and with a 0.77 goal to game ratio better than Rooney, Charlton and Lineker above him in the all time list..... ..and let's not forget his 6 hattricks ( still a record) two of which were four baggers ( still another record )......and scoring on all his professional debuts; Chelsea, AC Milan, Spurs, West Ham...and England. Quite simply the greatest goalscorer this country has ever produced.

As an American, I’ve been an English Football fan since 2010, you occasionally hear the name Jimmy Greaves, but after the sad news this morning, I started to research this incredible mans career. Greaves scored a record 366 goals. Until recently, this was the most in goals in European football history and stood the test of time for 46 years. This was broken only in 2017 by Cristiano Ronaldo. The greatest English striker of all time.

Only those who saw him play and I did hundreds of times home and away for the lilywhites, know just how great a player he was. Playing in two inches of mud and frozen pitches and a era of the game when defenders could kick you up in the air. He managed to drift pass players, wrong foot defenders. Just pure genius of a player. RIP the greatest player ever.

People like to throw stats around nowadays. Half the modern day players wouldn’t get anywhere close to Jimmy’s figures had they played back then. They’d get booted up in the air once and that’d be it, broken for life. Jimmy had the heart of a lion, just got on with it and hit teams where it really hurt; scoring goals and winning games. Incredible footballer, one of England’s best ever. Won’t ever be forgotten by England fans for everything he did for this nation. Should really be a statue at Wembley in all honesty.

Both Greavsie and Saint were not only great footballers (though Saint being nowhere near Jimmy and I'm a Liverpool fan) but great characters and entertainers on and off the field. They played and LIVED with a smile on their face and obviously had a LOT of fun from the stories they tell. Stark contrast with today's press groomed 'stars' who um and erm their way through pointless and dull interviews. Saint and Greavsie talked honestly about EVERYTHING. A friend of mine met Jimmy at an event about 15 years ago and asked about S&G coming back and Jim said that they'd never be allowed back because you can't tell the truth these days in case it upsets someone.

Lovely words & anecdotes from an obviously very emotional Martin Tyler. Greaves’ goal scoring records are amazing, but I will never forget what a sorry figure he looked, sitting next to Alf Ramsey, when we won the World Cup in ‘66. He missed the chance to play in the biggest game in our history. RIP Jimmy.
@choppy249
@choppy249 2 года назад
Yes it was very sad and ironic really as he is undoubtably the best striker that England have ever produced yet he had to sit in the stand and watch two lesser strikers than himself ( Hunt and Hurst ) play the entire game for 120 minutes . Those two were both terrific strikers in their own right yet they both have generously admitted many times that they were not in the same league as he was . Sir Alf said that Hunt and Hurst were a better combination for the team and worked better as a duo than Greaves with either of them but I have always been a bit doubtful of that ever since watching the final all those years ago . I think it had more to do with the fact that Ramsey definitely did not like Greaves as much as the other two . He liked players who were ‘ Yes men ‘ and obeyed his every word on and off the pitch . Jimmy wasn’t like that and was a bit of a practical joker and a maverick . That didn’t sit well with Ramsey and it definitely annoyed him . The real shame of it all is that Ramsey didn’t bring him on for at least a spell in the match as other managers often do when they have a Great player on the sub bench in a Big Final . I know that Hurst scored 3 but I think we would have won anyway if Jimmy had been playing . He took it like a man and was very fair and humble about it over the years but I don’t think he ever quite got over it emotionally . He SHOULD of been playing . He was and still is our greatest striker of all time .
