so great to watch your videos again! im moved and getting back into the swing of things. I'm loving this model! Great video, Chris. You always notice all the important details. 👑🔥
I’ve had the clear one for over a week now & like you am highly impressed by the alterations from the X159 & the finish so much so I have just ordered the clear red one. What a pen for the small amount you pay.
Ordered a couple of these a few weeks ago. I saw your video posted and then one was in my mail box! Anyway, thanks for the detailed overview of this pen!
Kudos to Jinhao again! Looking forward to the arrival of my 9019 and thanks for the close-up look at this fun, affordable new pen. The large converter is a great idea and I also like some of the small touches like the "No." and the name, thanks for the translaton of Dadao.
Hi Chris. Great to see what I believe is one of the first RU-vid reviews of the new Jinhao 9019. The highlight of the design in my opinion is the oversize converter. A brilliant idea! Both pens wrote very nicely and they are quite pretty. Looking forward to the forthcoming 630 and V1 reviews you teased us with.
Are you kidding me? I got the red one today and WOW!!!!!! What a fabulous pen--I want one in every color! Ha! Thanks--as always--for your dedication to us viewers--wonderful review of a spectacular pen!
Hello Chris! Thanks for the great detailed review about Jinhao Dadao 9010. You are the only one who reviewed it in English. Kudos for it. I've ordered the black one last week and can't wait to get it. You might forgot the fact that Jinhao copied the Pilot Namiki Yukari Royale ultra luxury fountain pen with this 9019. Jinhao 9019 is common man's affordable Namiki Yukari now! Please have a look at the Namiki Yukari Royale and you will realize it. Appreciate if you could show how it looks when posted. Great review and keep the good work and you've got a new subscriber now 😃
Thanks a lot. I had gone over two months without buying a pen, until this review. You did a great job, and I had to order one. Mine came in today. It's a medium and a good writer. A little dry, but I'm not going to mess with something that writes this good out of the box. Jinhao is starting to up their game.
Mine is in customs so I should have it soon. I like cartridge/converter pens. They're so much easier to clean and repair if something goes wrong. I hope that the big converter catches on.
Have mine for a few days. I got the EF. It wrote well from the get go. No hard starts. No skips. Lays down a consistent line. $12! Yup, very worthy indeed.
1. Giant convertor, yay! Sailor & Franklin-Christoph, take note, I would pay cash money for oversized proprietary convertors (or cartridges). Earlier I yayed Noodler's for their 308 giant screw-in reusable cartridges. 2. Thanks for keeping me current on pen developments.
I was so fed up with the tiny Sailor cartridges that I filed down the opening on a large Pelikan cartridge to make it fit the Sailor pens. That's my stopgap solution until Sailor decides to make a larger cartridge themselves.
I think it's fair to say that the X159 is Jinhao's take on a "Montblanc style" pen and these 9019 are "Namiki/Pilot style". I prefer Namiki pens visually so these are right up my alley. The large ink converter is a nice innovation but I might still eyedropper the demonstrator out of curiosity.
@@dancinswords Yes, that's one of the reasons I want to eyedropper it. There are conflicting reports regarding corrosion. Some people say that stainless steel and gold plated metal doesn't corrode but I am not willing to take the risk on my expensive pens.
The converter is also very aesthetic. And that gives, especially in the demonstrator version (also in the translucent ones), a very pleasant visual impression. A fact that is still incredible for a pen of these prices where as a general rule, as in the X150, functionality only should predominate.
Hi Chris! Thank you for this globally available preview on Jinhao DADAO 9019. There was only one other Chinese video without translation before. I've been using it for a few days and it certainly marks a new frontier in the world of fountain pens. It must be said that the larger converter screws into the section and on the opposite side ends between the internal fins of the pen body. The whole thing is very stable and functional. I understand that it is the first time that Jinhao has followed its brand with a word DADAO as well as a number. Until now they have always been at most a letter and a number. The name DADAO 9019 hides a reference to the X159 ... a fascinating enigma as a sign of continuity ...
Looks a great pen. Thanks, Chris, I'm definitely going to try and get one. BTW, I noticed on the nib , just forward of the cut-outs, it actually says "X159", so clearly the same nib.
What I'm most excited about is the Medium nib. One major reason i avoid Jinhao is their EF and F only for most models. Something this size and capacity really needs the M and B nib options.
Thanks, Chris, for pointing out the design improvements on this Jinhao model. I'm impressed by the threads that engage the converter and that the converter itself is bigger than its brothers. When the original black metal Jinhao 159 came out it irked me that so large a pen had the same itty-bitty ink capacity as smaller pen models. The metal collar on the converter is a good feature, too. I wonder if the fins inside the cap and barrel improve stability of the plastic. It would, over production in the millions, use a measurable amount of material, and it's not like the Chinese engineers to waste material. Your thoughts?
I just ordered it-- I am so glad I waited. I have a Jinhao 450 in medium I just love. Was not real keen on the x159. I dislike buying pens that are Black and Gold, looks like every other pen. Glad they have different colors. Thanks for the video.
A definite contender for pen of the year. The converter and the nib are spectacular although I did have to floss the tines to get my clear and black 9019s to write as true mediums. I will be ordering the medium nib pack so I can grind them to cursive italics and stubs.
Thank you, after watching yours and doodlebud's review I went and bought one off Aliexpress, the transparent one :) Fun to see the ink sloshing about in those pens. got the X159 w/ medium nib, called Z159 on the band. Like it, so I'm curious about an even BIGGER pen. Got the F nib for this one as all my pens seem to be Medium nibs. I already have the TWSBI eco rosegold, lamy safari, kaweco sport and a Pilot MR. It's a rabbit hole but at least it's a less expensive one than watch collecting (which I've also been doing for years). As long as I manage to avoid the expensive Montblancs..
I was resisting buying new pen and then this model came out... After hearing amazing reviews, again have been tempted to buy this pen😅 because of the fat section, incredible classic type looks and big new converter, have ordered dark blue model..
Hi sir, Thanks for all the detailed (and fun) information on this fountain pen. I prefer small pens, I haven't tried Chinese pens yet either, but I have already decided to order my first Jinhao and it will be a 9019. cheers.
I just got my demonstrator blue aqua Dadao today (Medium nib) and I can’t wait to fill her up it’s a beauty and although I’m a girl, I love a big fat pen.
I've been waiting for someone to review this. I've had mine for a week (clear, medium nib) and want to take it apart in hopes of troubleshooting it, but I didn't want to break anything. I love the look of the pen. It gets an A+ from me in that department. But I have to say that I'm disappointed in the writing experience. I love Jinhaos. I know they can be fantastic writers. This one (and my x159) just isn't one of them. I'm hoping that changes over time because it's a really gorgeous pen. I do have small hands, so that may be part of it. But I have to press HARD to get consistent ink flow for more than one letter at a time. That's one of the things I'm trying to avoid with fountain pens. My x159 is exactly the same. Maybe it's the bigger nibs and my small hands? (The 82s and 599s are fantastic writers for me.)
Flush out nib/feed? Micromesh? Floss the nib? Use well-lubricated ink? These nibs do require some pressure to write consistently. Can be resolved a bit, but from my experience, will not write well with little pressure. The smaller No. 5 nibs, as you know, write differently.
Oho this is great x159 already great - minus the barrel inner thread showing signs of damage from screwing against metal thread from the section-, my 82 transparent however new, still looking good. I hope this dadao will repeat the 82 popularity. Great reviews again :)
Some types of krytox grease could harm the plastic. I stay away from any petroleum based grease. I only use pure silicone grease as used by divers (yes I am certified).
Oww didn’t know that, my krytox gpl 205 sourced from local DIY mechanicals keyboard specialist shop, touted plastics safe by reddit community & I used it 4 years ago for lubing the switches: plastics rails & stainless steel springs. I’ll look for silicone grease, thanks again 🙏🏼
I am enjoying mine very much, although because of the way I tend to hold my pen, I have to be careful not to let my hold on it be too low, or I get on the feed and wind up with a lot of mess. It makes a pretty sound when I cross my t’s. ❤
Perhaps Jinhao has been looking at the reviews of the X159. People have been wanting a piston filler for this pen, but Jinhao doesn't make such an animal. Coming out with an enlarged converter is a definite step in the right direction. If this converter had come out with the X159, I would not have Frankenpen it to become an eyedropper, though I am impressed with the resultant capacity (over 3.5 ml). I wonder if you can get the converter separately?
I might be wrong. But I think the size of the nib is based on the width of the nib at the shoulder. Not the diameter of the barrel portion of it. Please correct me if I’m wrong.
I use the feed diameter & have seen others use that. The feeds do measure in mm close to the nib number. As I say, there is no publish standard I am aware of. And sbrebrown also says it is the feed size. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-0QaupR-DkDk.html
I have a few X159s, and while the 9019 offers some minor improvements (the converter being chief among them), there is no qualitative change that is so compelling that I would want to buy one. However, as I've said in the past, if Jinhao beefed up the X159 and improved the quality of the plastics, added a piston filling system, and kept the price under $30, then it would be an excellent pen. It is still a good pen, with or without the improvements, and well worth the price. Thanks for the review and your insights into the 9019.
@@chrisrap52 I think that, if the X159 is a bit heavier, it would be an improvement in its feel and presentation. My main complaint about this pen, and I have seen the same comment from reviewers on other sites, it the X159 seems doesn't seem very solid. Not quite flimsy but still insubstantial. Of course, if Jinhao beefed up the pen the price would go up, but in my extremely humble opinion, it wouldn't increase enough that it would be significant and the pen would feel even more like a Mont Blanc (or a Sailor, Pilot, etc) and that would be a good thing. Add a piston-filling system or a vac-filling setup to such a pen and one would have something that would be well worth thirty dollars, more or less. Your mileage may vary, though.
I believe that at 28 gm the X159 is not a light pen. The MB 149 is 32 gm not that much more. Some expected a large pen to weigh more. Others have chimed in creating a perception. They don't have an MB 149 for comparison. I don't feel the X159 is insubstantial. Pen feels good in my hand. Most high end pens weigh around 30 gm as the X159 does. It is lighter than the initial metal 159 which many feel is too heavy. What does one expect from a $6 pen! The Majohn 630 I'm reviewing is a big piston fill pen and is over $30, 5x the X159. We have so many pen choices.
@@chrisrap52 Well, we all have our perceptions but, with all due respect, the pen feels less substantial than some other pens but weight isn't the only relevant factor. The engineering, manufacturing processes, and, yes, the quality of the plastics being used all come together to create a pen that provides an impression of quality. The X159 is a lot of pen for the price but it could be better. If you feel differently, I understand.
Fine, informative review, and at a pace that lets me absorb what you're saying and showing. Thanks, Chris!. Have you tried to fit the new, larger converter in the x159? It would be nice if it fit!
Have you tried a Jinhao 82? That is smaller & is in almost an infinite range of colors. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-rk0vH9VGp2s.html
@@chrisrap52 Yes sir ! I have 2 of them.. In fact I made a comment to one of your 82 videos saying “your 82 collection won’t be complete without a shimmer model” 🙂
One minor complaint I have about the x159 is the nib - at least, on mine - will slide sideways a little bit on top of the feed. Is the nib any more secure on the 9019? I probably shouldn't complain. I write with light pressure.
Hola.
Spread the tines. Can use a thin metal strip, I use a feeler gauge (from when I used to work on my car) , start at 0.04mm go up to 0.08mm. Use Doug's (Inkquiring Minds) 7 strokes to ink happiness. My experience will not totally eliminate needing some pressure but will need less.
This is an update. I receivedine today. When i went to flush the nib and feed I was splattered with blue ink. Do they pretest the pens? The nib reminds me of a Wing Sung nib in terms of shape.
@@chrisrap52 It may be just me but the golden extension of the converter may also serve to lengthen the rod within the converter so you can draw that 1.7 ml of ink.
If only they could get the cap twist rate down. Anything more than 1-1.5 turns and it’s a hinderance if you have to cap and uncap with any sort of regularity.
