Jinhao x159 and 9019 Nib Swapping - Jinhao x159 2nd Generation

Welcome to another Inkquiring Minds SHORTIE. I bet you didn't know that Jinhao has changed the x159's nib unit from the 1st generation so that new replacement nib units do not fit.
I show you how you can swap the x159 and 9019 nibs into the old-style nib units on the x159.

I pull the nib after un-screwing collar from grip-section, ever since I broke the body/grip-section threads pulling a very stuck nib. Granted, that was a rusted dip nib and was more stuck than most FP nibs would get, but still -- the fewer pieces I'm putting strain on the better.

Only apply reasonable pressure. Anything that stuck needs to be soaked in water with a drop of dish soap.

@@InkquiringMinds why not? It softens ebonite and plastic, with a well controlled max temperature. I've never hurt any pens using hot water. But if you have, I'd love to know what I should be careful of.

@@forgotMyUsername100Never soak ebonite in water. Water discolors ebonite. Plastics will deform in hot water. There are many types of plastics all with their own melting points, most of which are well below 212 degrees F.

This week I found out it is possible to swap out Jinhao's #8 nibs with those in the Wing Sung 630. Jinhao polishes its nibs to a higher lever of quality than Wing Sung so it is worth the effort to trade them back and forth, especially if one wants a medium nib in their 630.

Nice tip! My WS630 has a 14k nib, so I won’t be swapping. But good to know.

As I found out, I have the 1st generation X159 and attempted to switch nibs with the 9019. Switching the nibs without the assembly was fine. I think I may have mentioned this before and I guess I am not the only one who discovered the assembly change.

Take note that the collar is keyed, most if not all of the OOTB units are seated incorrectly, the reason why some nibs/feeds are hard to pull. Once you've aligned it, it's easier to pull, and clean.

Hi Doug, you r the boss! Hey, I am new, new to fountain pens and your channel has really got me excited about all price ranges, collecting and the technical aspects. I too enjoy taking my pens apart with the faint hope I will be able to reassemble. I have a problem however, I would like to acquire a pen holder/display of some kind. You have some cool looking holders on your desk. Could you do a video on pen holders, stands, cases, dsplays, recommendations?

I got a new pen that takes bock 380 nib units and the first gen nib units can screw in just well enough to work. Like you can usually pull the whole unit out the threads dont catch perfect but good enough. I just wanted a nicer body for my #8 stacks

Doug , I got a nib swap for you ! Majohn T5, Conklin Duragraph, and Kaigelu 316a all nib units can be swapped between pens. They all conform to the "Jowo nib unit size " and threads.

Awesome. Most #6 nibs will swap if you use the pen’s own feed and nib collar - and if there is cap clearance.

alll three pens screw in no problem . I was gobsmacked! In my Kaigelu 316a I have a Conklin Flex nib and in the t5 is the Kaigeku 316a nib perfect fit. @@InkquiringMinds

Too bad that they changed the nib units. The only ones were (apparently) compatible with the Bock #8 nib units.

Very professional and pragmatic in your presentation. I have a question. Wonder if it is possible to replace the #8 X159 nib with a smaller #6 Jinhao one? Will it seat well? My current nib writes a bit too broad for my taste.

I haven't tried it but the #6 size nib is too small for the nib collar and feed. It might slide into the collar but I suspect the ink flow would not be good.
