I genuinely don’t understand why Jk Rowling is being rewarded for speaking in ‘simple English’ Not using any sort of accurate facts or statistics, and not using reliable sources doesn’t make it simple English. It just makes it incorrect. If any teenager doing their English exam had written an essay like this, they would’ve been lucky to pass the class

If a transphobe has to be called every time a trans person appears on TV, the continuation of that logic should be that a trans person has to appear (and be given air time) every time trans related issues are discussed. I'd actually really like that. No discussing race without a member of the discussed race. No discussing religion without a person who takes part in that religion. No discussing adoption by gay people without either a gay adoptive parent or a person who's parents are the same sex. That would be the best idea in the history of TV.

The point isn't to answer the question. The point is to ask the question indefinitely because you cannot definitively answer the question: "How do you know you are the gender say you are?" Even we can't agree on that answer amongst ourselves, because it's such an abstract thing to describe. But as long as we can never give an answer they will accept, the music will keep playing and the debate keeps turning- because as long as our existence is not legally accepted, then we can never legally get the rights and the protections we need and we can never answer the more interesting questions like "why are so many trans people unable to get the healthcare they require?"

I hate saying this because I know it will not be well received, but one of the things that's helped me be less frustrated about all of this is just accepting that the average cis person is genuinely incapable of understanding a transgender person and most of them don't and will never care enough to. That's why we live lives that are so uncontroversial, but our very existence causes them to go from zero to 100. That's why someone like myself who transitioned 15 years ago and has used the women's restroom for nearly most of her life knows factually that it's a nonsensical debate based on nothing but fear, but the people, some of whom I'd say aren't consciously transphobic, can only think of men crossdressing to rape women and girls. We listen to this and think it's crazy because we live with our lives and we've sat with this for a very long time, but for them, they've learned about trans people nearly as fast as they've started debating against their existence. People never think of trans women like myself in these debates, they think of their neighbor Joe just "deciding" that he's a woman on monday and using the women's room by tuesday. I've worked very very hard to help people understand transgender people and I'm still having the same conversations at 30, that I was at 20. I think more people are starting to understand, but it seems like even more of them are becoming antagonistic towards the very concept of my existence. It's depressing, for sure, but I think it's helpful to recognize that we can't control these things. JaK Rowling's hatred of trans women was obvious since people first accused her of hating trans women. it's cartoonish that she'd be awarded for her transphobic piece, but not shocking to me. Even less shocking is how this dude could genuinely believe that he isn't affirming what she's saying, as he continues to highlight one of the most transphobic passages. The vibe I got from that is what i'm saying about cis folks in general- he doesn't care enough to understand us and probably never will, but what he knows is that it's weird and he's scared. Most cis people will never actually care enough about trans people to get it.

Sadly, I’ll have to agree. Most transphobic people are just afraid of a stereo type, so they don’t even try to find the true. For a long time the media pained trans people as dangerous predators, and so that’s all that people think. I’m am not trans, but I have tried to understand what trans people go through. I want to be a good ally; I also didn’t grow up in a homophobic, or transphobic house hold. A lot of transphobia or homophobia starts at home, but I wish more people would try to reach out and learn more.
@sawyersmith8943
@sawyersmith8943 3 года назад
It's pretty infuriating that these people make damaging and completely unrealistic generalizations about our community, just so people are scared of us. They wouldn't be able to identify fact if it slapped them in the face. Trans people get attacked in bathrooms MANY times more than cis women, not only as sexual assault, but also as hate-fueled aggression. If only people tried to reach out to those around them, and try to understand the personal experiences of those around them, instead of living in an echo chamber. All the fear and hate they spread makes more people assume the worst in us, making them think they'd be able to identify us and be able to "keep women safe," by removing women from their deemed safe spaces. I also think it goes without mentioning that anyone who's lived for more than 9 years has almost certainly already gone into a public restroom with a trans person and been completely fine.
@irishviolet9062
@irishviolet9062 3 года назад
@@sawyersmith8943 I agree, people need to gather more information before reaching an opinion. It’s probably a bad analogy, but when you have to turn in a paper for school you look up facts. You gather all the information, and then come up with a thesis. The same should go when you encounter anything new in the world. Just because something is different or “strange,” doesn’t give you the right to attach it. Trans people have been sound for an extremely long time, and they will still exist tomorrow. No amount of bigotry or transphobia will change that. Trans people have to go through a lot, and throwing in people who literally want nothing more than for them to stop existing is horrendous. Again, I’m am not trans, and I don’t speak for all of them, but living a world were people want you to sip existing sound demoralizing. Why can’t people just get along, why don’t they see trans people as they are, just people trying to live their life to their fullest. 🏳️‍⚧️🏳️‍🌈

It still gets me that she threw a fit over the 'people who menstruate' bit. The article was about the unique difficulty for people who menstruate in undeveloped countries during Covid. Plenty of cis women don't menstruate. Rowling, a woman who most likely doesn't menstruate anymore because she's likely post-menopausal, isn't in the group of people who were being discussed.

@amandap7599 3 года назад
@@jeremyjolly3645 She threw a fit over the inclusion of trans men and non-binary people who menstruate in the title of an article. Wah! Minorites were acknowledged to exist. The whole thing reminds me of how hetero conservatives act like gay people getting to marry took something away from them. Minorites being acknowledged isn't an attack on the majority. As for her little essay, she shared a bunch of disinformation and hate mongering. She lies wildly claiming that trans people don't Believe in biological sex. Honey, if trans people didn't believe in biological sex then they wouldn't be trans. Her bs about trans bathroom rights causing women to be attacked is nonsense. As more trans women have been coming out, there hasn't been some spike in women's bathroom attacks. You know what there has been? More attacks on trans women. What Rowling said in that essay was that there are men running around dressed as women, and they are going to attack women and children. You think that makes people more or less likely to fear trans women that they see? You think that maybe attacks on trans women are ever provoked by people like Rowling saying that any trans woman on the street might just be some sicko who is coming for your wife and kids? Rowling's article was easily anti-trans. She might want to lie to herself and say that she's so sympathetic to trans women, but clearly she's not that sympathetic to them, since she'd rather they be put in actual danger than share a space with them.
@amandap7599
@amandap7599 3 года назад
@@jeremyjolly3645 Do you think that her complaining about the inclusion of trans men and non-binary people when talking about those who menstruate is feminist? Cause you'd be wrong. @amandap7599
@amandap7599 3 года назад
@@jeremyjolly3645 The entire article is about people who menstruate. It specifically mentions girls, women, and non-binary people in the article. There's no question about what the article meant. Either Rowling didn't read the article, had some knee jerk response, and refused to correct her mistake afterward, or she was fussing that she didn't like that a more inclusive term was being used, cause she thinks it takes something away from women. If the article had nothing to do with menstruation and randomly used the term 'people who menstruate' then *maybe* she'd have a point, but it did have to do with people who menstruate, so she had no point.
@amandap7599
@amandap7599 3 года назад
Respecting trans people and acknowledging their experience isn't controversial. The whole thing just feels very similar to the people who say that they have no problem with gay people, but then they whine when gay people want any respect or rights. You can pretend that it's so much effort to acknowledge gender identity first, but that just seems like a lack of empathy from you. I notice you never responded to whether you think that it creates excess danger for trans women to have people like Rowling push the narrative that any trans woman could secretly be a pervert rapist? Cause if you can't even acknowledge that then you really are just willfully blind.
@amandap7599
@amandap7599 3 года назад
@@jeremyjolly3645 She suggested that there are men dressed as women prowling around attacking women and that should be used as a reason to keep trans women out of restrooms. There hasn't been any notable uptick in crime against cis-women in bathrooms since there has been more inclusiveness, so she's fear-mongering with no evidence. How do you suppose people on the street tell the difference between men dressed as women and trans women that don't pass? Do you suppose that maybe if those two get conflated due to fear mongering that maybe some trans women will get attacked due to the suggestion that they might be predators? It's very affirming to bigots to hear a figure like Rowling suggesting that there is some epidemic of attacks on women by 'men dressed as women.' Misinformation like that is dangerous. I'm glad that you don't feel overly dysphoric when people call you a woman instead of by your gender identity first, but that's not the experience of most trans people.

I'm nearing 40, nonbinary, and spent my life arguing that all people are people, and that we should all treat each other with dignity regardless of sex, or skin colour, or gender, or orientation, or birthplace. It's been extremely disheartening to see such a loud group reducing people to the genitals and chromosomes that they're born with. It's so regressive. These "feminists" are undoing so much of the hard work real feminists have done for decades. Whether they explicitly state it or not, it's very clear they believe that every person born with a penis should be presumed to be a sexual predator, and every person born with a vagina is a natural victim who must be protected from those alleged predators at all costs. They're misandrist and misogynist, and their opinion of humanity is abysmal. It's appalling. We are all so much more than our genitals, and our chromosomes only matter to the people we might choose to have children with, or our doctors. It must be exhausting to live in fear of an imaginary threat your entire existence.

I read Rowling's essay, and it was damaging, and horrible, and the opposite of what trans people need. As she talked about the era she was raised in and her history of domestic abuse, I see how her fear has been channeled towards trans women. That is not an excuse for her speaking openly against trans rights, such as allowing trans women into women-only spaces, and we should be responding, as Jamie did, with informed and logical rebuttal towards her and others also fueled by uninformed fears; and love, support and validation towards the trans community. However, it makes it so much worse that her views, instead of being rebut, have been validated by an organisation as established and respected as the BBC, despite the clear lack of relevant evidence throughout her essay. Furthermore, Amol Rajan, who judged the prize, distanced himself from her opinions and wrote that it would be 'not worth your time' to challenge him on them, citing free speech without regard that freedom of speech is not freedom of reasonable consequence. It is childish of him to clear his hands of responsibility and make himself unanswerable. Yes; the culture of online hate makes it off-putting and difficult to wade through a myriad of responses, but when you publicly judge such a charged essay, an essay that has real-world implications for thousands of people, you cannot sit back and refuse to take responsibility for the statements you decided to share and promote. Rowling's essay was not neutral and pretending that promoting writing about people's reality can be neutral because it was well-written is bullshit.

By choosing this piece, which does not meet the award criteria, that editor has chosen to side with Rowling.
