The funniest part of the female to male ratio in dbfZ is that not only did they put in nearly every female who's had a meaningful fight in the show. But they also CREATED a character exclusively for this game, made her female, put her in the game TWICE, and there's still only 5 girls playable
The interesting thing about voicelines is that doesn't apply only to fighting games. Half of what makes Team Fortress 2 iconic to this day is the number of lasting memes that have been created from voicelines of the playable characters. I've seen random streamers cite the entire conversation from the "Meet the Spy" video in unrelated games.
Tf2 voice lines have affected me so much I will randomly say shit like "Oh they're gonna have to glue you back together, IN HELL" regardless of whatever I play
Honda's got some great lines, makes him even more annoying to fight lmao: "HEADBUTT", "NYEHEHE", "YOU HUNGRY? HERE'S SOME BEEF!". And the way he goes "OOOOOH YOYOYO" in his lvl 3, what a goober, people who played season 1 SF6 will always remember this stuff
@@TheCJRhodes even if she gets Strived she'll still have her overall gameplay stay the same. DI Ky is kinda a similar idea already which is in the game, she just isn't very popular which I don't think would change
its a small detail, but its the coolest thing on earth to me that if you land the KO hit in strive with certain special moves, it uses a different voice line! potemkin killing with heat extender makes him REALLY belt out that exxtennnderrrrrr for example. adore that detail so much
I was in the crowd for the evo 2019 cell yell fake out and that feeling from the audience was genuine. I think "don't let players skip the cell yell" might be an actual rule for stage management from then on.
Diaphone seems like the type of guy who youd see in the computer lab in high school putting together a project youd see again in two hours when he presents it to the class. Kizzie seems like a“i got this shit done the day it was assigned” type of guy
Kizzie did look like he did the entire project in class the first day and spent the remaining time practicing the performance of how he was going to clown fools for choking.
Fun fact about voice actors. Norio Wakamoto is the same voice actor for Cell, Johnny and SF5 Bison in japanese. He's a god among voice actors, such an iconic voice.
I don't even play Ken in sf6 but his lvl 3 "COMIN' AT YA" is forever burned into my brain. The character lines across the whole cast of sf6 are all fantastic.
the fact dsp was at any point capable of placing in a competition, let alone getting a #1 is baffling to me today, who knows him from the "how not to play dark souls" compilations
This is true, but that was the one year that nobody else who seriously competed showed up. It was like a one in a million perfect storm for him to win lol
Part of the reason why I didn't like it when they changed Bryan's laugh after T5. I'm okay with his new one and they're changing it again in T8, but the old one is iconic
I liked yours on iconic voicelines! People at a Super Smash Bros Ultimate tourney were yelling along to Sora voicelines this year during top 8 and it was the same kind of fun.
That was maister vs onin right? Maister was down and he had like no chance of winning EDIT: wait that was the one where they shot confetti on accident because the crowd went so wild lmao
Hands down the best example of character sounds being all you need for a fighting game is “no sound effects BBTAG, English Chie Ruby only, final final destination”
Damn Dragonball.....one of your ladies is just two ladies fused together for one slot and TWO OF THEM ARE AN OC......ONE BEING THE OC WEARING A LABCOAT.
Personally, I disagree with Diaphone's premise. Mainly because he failed to address the counter examples of unpopular games with a high female to male ratio like SNK Heroines, Eternal Fighter Zero and Arcana Heart (all have a 100% female cast) and the huge popularity of DBFZ despite having only a 5% ratio.
Idk if it was in your missing slides or not, but another thing in the sound vein is just Tekken Hit Sounds- that shit carries that game so hard, you know when you hear steve or the crowd do the Uh Uh Ah! during a combo that shit just hits good. You so right tho sounds really do define the feeling and experience first
"None of you care about ABA" *Ahem* If ABA has 7 fans then I am one of them. I ABA has no fan then that means I am no longer on earth. If the Sajam is against ABA, then I am against the Sajam.
9:22 “an opening” gives me ptsd from Naruto storm games mifune, his near instant near fullscreen jutsu my friend would spam anytime in neutral to get a free hit. Mind you I’m not a fan of playing street fighter so I think of this instead.
These presentations were pretty fun. Always glad to see JM collabing with other fighting game people. On the subject of iconic lines in fighters, I kinda hope Elphelt's win screen scream gets up there.
Man I love kizzie but mans absolutely REFUSES to talk into his goddamn mic fr Shit be sounding like he's talking into some 3rd party earbuds mic that hasn't been cleaned in like 5 years lmao
They thought Tekken devs were just fools, they thought presentations and fighting games just don't mix, they thought it wouldn't be possible. A truly inspiring show of academic prowess. That being said, I don't know if Diaphone addressed it, but I think that Granblue percentage is wrong.
In regards to the last bit you talked about, I had a similar problem. I was in a science class, they had us do a group assignment, I was told to do basically all the work, I informed the teacher and requested to do my assignment solo. When the day to turn in the assignment came, I handed mine in, the teacher asked the group I was supposed to be with for theirs, and they had nothing. The groups were stuck together all year but me and two others all wanted to separate from ours. We said we'd rather do ours solo and the teacher stuck us together. Three people who work hard enough pull all the weights individually, working together instead was wonderful.
On the point of audio, I always think of majinobama watching a Twitch streamer learn Strive on release. For a lot of people what's important in a fighting game is just "getting the dolphin to come out". Anyway. "AND THIS FILTHY PLANET" -Cooler
Goldlewis' english VA is REALLY good ngl. Same thing with Happy Chaos and Elphelt. It's one of those games where I flip-flop between sub/dub because both languages have some winners.
Diaphone's session really bugs me. At least from my experiences, it's basically untrue. I mean, some of the most popular fighters are indeed more male leaning. Looking at the other side of the spectrum, some of the worst selling and regarded fighting games that I've seen out there have primarily-to-entirely female casts. "Nitroplus Blasters" (14 characters, 20 assists, 100% female) "Aquapazza" (10/13 characters, 13/13 assists, 88% female) "Million Arthur: Arcana Blood" (9/13 characters, 23/31 assists, 73% female) "Blade Arcus Rebellion" (14/21 characters, 67% female) "Touhou Hisoutensoku" (20 characters, 100% female) "Touhou: Antonomy of Common Flowers" (19 characters, 100% female) "Koihime Enbu" (15 characters, 9 assists, 100% female) "Arcana Heart" (26 characters, 100% female) - One of, if not the, most despised fighters out there. And so on. "Vanguard Princess", "Asuka 120%", "Tōkidenshō Angel Eyes", etc. Not exactly fighters that are regarded well or are only viewed as kusoge meme material. I think "Skullgirls" might just be the sole exception of having a mostly female cast but is actually quite beloved by the FGC.
As one of the 7 people who played a little ABA, such a shame she isn't in Strive. My favourite modern fighting game voice line is Ken's "SIT DOWN AND SHUT UP" on his critical art. Homeboy is just done with your shit its so good.
In my country a lot of people who grew up in the era of arcade cabinets do remember Street Fighter. They know “Ryu” (probably pronounced “rye-you”) And they know how to say Hadouken, probably shoryuken, but never “Tatsumaki Senpukyaku” it gets distorted and has some sorr of Mandela effect where people say it as “Tan-tan-pukken” lmao
The ending about the presentation role hit me hahahahah I always asked (and delivered) the presentation, because I was fucking lazy to do the research and etc, but the people who were on my group in college didn't like public speaking, so it was a Win-win. It's definitely the lazy role
I actually like Diaphone's topic the most, it could be a good subject for a video, because some fighting games are seriously lacking in the ladies. But this was funny...
I will die on my A.B.A hill. Her running animation is absolutely hilarious an idc about her wack Rekka inputs Edit: How was that Green eggs an ham line not Hotashi
My favorite fighting game voice line that I've played? Definitely fox's "FIYAH" from Melee. -Marth's "Ee nah! Meetah de grace!" is in my brain too. -two. Two. Two two two. (Sheik wavedashing) -"falcon punch" is iconic for everyone But Marvel also has sick sound design: -The power of the power of the power of the -Stalking flame! Burn to cinders! -Foot dive! Foot dive! Foot foot dive! Street fighter: -Oro's "what could I do next?" -AKI's "my magnum opus!" -Ryu's "now the fight has begun!" I picked my main in GG based on sound: -mappa hunch! And decided I hated May before I even played the game because her voice was annoying
The Fact KizzyK didn't talk about how Tweek was up 3-1 in games and had a 3-1 stock lead DURING EVO but found a way to lose is criminal about worse choke or how Perfect 13gend got 13-0.
Honestly Sajam's presentation is 90% of why I play Lowain in Granblue. Hearing "WAAAAY!" "WAHEEEYY!" when I use moves sticks with me, I love the little noises that he makes when you are fighting.
I would like to point out that some of us A.B.A voters just think the character looks cool, and we don't care that we didn't play her in XX because they're just gonna reinvent her if she gets into Strive anyway
Whoa whoa whoa as an old man ABA player who used to watch Moroha tournament sets for combo ideas, I feel personally attacked. Give me ABA back damnit, even if she's totally reworked. Maybe bring back Danzai so I can gorilla though.
3:33 it’s me, I’m the seven people. But yea every poll with ABA at the top is laughable because almost no one played GGXX and ArcSys said NA and EU was the vast majority of respondents and they played GGXX even less than Japan
There is a 90's fighting game who not only had the first old lady in fighting games, Otane Gokujetsi, but also the first muscle mommy in fighting games, Angela Belti. And while PI was never a popular series, it wasn't kuzoge or anything like that either, and it was possible to find PI cabinets in some of the biggest arcades back in the days.
