I've actually made myself feel physically sick listening to certain verve tracks over and over and over again. Richards voice reaches inside and touches you spiritually.
richard ashcroft is by far and away the most talented songwriter of his generation his music has depth soul healing sadness his music kept me alive during a 20 year drug addiction thamks richard god bless
robert wilson same dude. When people talk about the highs and how good they are, remember the lows are the exact mirror image. Hell is a real place. I’ve been there too many times for it not to be real. Seconds feel like hours and the pain, physically and emotionally is all encompassing...
Everyone always shouts out Urban Hymns as a "masterpiece",but their albums before were way more soulful, progressive, more intense and psychedelic. As a Genxer growing up in the states that's all that was shoved down our throats was Urban Hymns. This man has seriously touched so many lives with his beautiful spirit. To not talk shit about the other guys in the band is proof that this man has integrity.
Lana Howard - with you 100%! If it wasn't for Bittersweet Symphony and Lucky Man, there is a possibility Urban Hymns would have never reached folks here in the States! Thank Buddha that it did or I would have never been exposed to their music before UH's and Ash's incredible solo albums!! Dude delivers on every record and his most recent record shows us that he is on top of his craft!
I do really love the man. Sometime in 97 after I decided I liked the Verve since they sounded like dreamy, emotional, beautiful, british pop I read an article comparing them to Radiohead. I also like Radiohead but I love the Verve. To me and many others Radiohead is too detached, beautiful but not completely front and center present in your heart. Does this make sense? Even today as I was driving on the freeway going to buy vegetables to plant in my garden, I was blasting Northern Soul, to me their best album - especially tracks 3,4, 7 and 8 - and all the rest. I grew up as a kid in the 80's listening to my brother sing pink floyds the wall or dark side or wish you were here in the other room as I changed into sweatpants to go play outside kickball and handball...and sometimes I just heard him....but I fell in love with Pink Floyd and there is no better band, other than perhaps dead can dance or bathory...or....well I can't go on but Verve is unreal and Richard is also unreal solo - that voice and the lyrics and the emotion are very real and grounding in this day and age of post modern nasty shit. That is my story, thanks for reading.
dont know anyone else on this fuckin planet who can make 2 chords into such wonder-my favourite album is 'alone with everybody' its a true masterpiece, this guys the bomb
This was broadcast like at 1am, remember staying up for it. Sadly Money To Burn was only played Live on that LP tour and ignored still to this day, considering he loves Singles he omitted it since 2001. The feud with The Verve was between Richard, Nick and Simon Jones. Reunited in 2007 for money, didn't last long, just a year.
It's good that he is self aware and can say he is self obsessed and needs to satisfy himself and needs love to make him less self obsessed. Because everyone is a bit self obsessed and need to feel important. That's why don't take it personally if people are inconsiderate. They are either just self obsessed and inconsiderate or need a bit of love. To feel better about themselves. Ignore them.
It's just a MASSIVE ArrrrrrrH for Mr Ashcroft..... My soul bleeds for this GREAT ARTIST. Who I must say was #Wideawake never mind #Slideaway. He's still ALIVE pl 💪 the most AMAZIN night of my life was at Newcastle arena......the verve just broke up. My other half said "you'll be lucky if he sings LUCKY man" OMG he was on 🔥✔💯☯️🔝🛐your the man .....TOTAL RESPECT 🙏💪
The Best singer / songwriter from the 90s. When we had the so called Brit Pop era there was some great bands and music but the 2 that were supposedly the best were Oasis and Blur!! But it actually wasn't.... Oasis and Blur used the press to boost their sales and make them more commercial. Noel and Liam are still doing it to this day by slagging each other off on social media and TV interviews. Richard Ashcroft is without any doubt the best songwriter and singer of our generation!! How Noel won a songwriter award the other day is beyond me!! Richard Ashcroft songs piss all over any oasis / gallagher song and his voice is 1000 times stronger. Keep up the good work Richard
I like him most when he's playing solo and acoustic. Ok. Maybe his guitar technique is not top notch, hence most of the critique, but his songs become like mantra's. It's the pure, bare and raw soul that's so beautiful and blows me away every time.
Such a modest and intelligent guy. Jo Whiley is cringeworthy, can't stand her.."can you stop rummaging in your pockets"..I mean wtf...she has one of the finest songwriters sat beside her and she comes away with that shit
song for the lovers is a classic the chords vocals lyrics a genius which the uk medis rubbish there all public schoolboys who have never been down in life oasis cant touch him weller dont have hid depth coldplay admit his genuis wake up n watch the best songewriter in uk by a mile
I thought his solo album was tremendous. I 'found it', if you know what I mean, musically, once... in its entirety... 'it is as he said it is'... Everyone's a twat man... But you've got to respect those with talent who at least make an effort and produce good works. I am ashamed of members of my family, because I hold this man in high regard as a musician of a time to some degree. His solo album was lovely. But he was betrayed by his best friend. In a vile way. I know that man.
Nicky Nustar That's cool, I'll always be a Verve guy. I just 'got' the band when I heard Urban Hymns age 14, then bought the first two albums and loved both of them too. It was the combination of all four of them, just becoming the sum total of their individual talents. I loved the psychedelic element, the funk they had which other bands didn't, the soul, the 'mad Richard' persona. RA's solo stuff always seemed tame to me in comparison.
First of all it is an interview... and the questions asked pertained to him hence the title "Jo Whiley Inteviews Richard Ashcroft". Pay attention and keep your comments to your self especially something as opinionated as that. Whining is boring by the way...
How is ashcroft a "better" writer than dylan? How can you compare? why would you want to? whats the point? - just two songwriters doing their thing on two different continents, from two different generations. When has ashcroft made an allusion to "capturing" dylan. Actually what are you on about?
