I'll never understand why Joan thought she looked so bad here & would go into hiding for the rest if her life. As usual, Crawford looked classy & elegant.

Joan Crawford had a very pleasing voice even in her later years and after years of smoking. Too there was a graciousness to the way she talked. I've watched a couple of interviews with Louise Brooks from around 10 years before her death and even after many year of smoking, and I think it was heavy smoking (she eventually had emphysema) her voice was still pleasant to listen to.

My roommate died of cancer, liver cancer, i think Joan had it as well, I took care of her thru it all, when you have lived thru some one having that illness, makes it easier to tell when you see another with it. I can tell looking at Joan here that her face has slimmed, probably from the cancer, my roommate's face did the same, so sad, Rest in Peace Joan, WE WILL ALWAYS LOVE YOU. :)

Obviously the paparazzi were at this event snapping pictures of both Joan Crawford and Rosalind Russell. When the pictures finally appeared in the papers Joan was shocked at how bad she thought she looked. She said right then and there, if this is how I really look, then no one will ever see me again, and no one ever did. She basically became a recluse after this, refusing interviews and even invitations from close friends. She stayed in her apartment in NYC for almost 3 years until she eventually died. Quite sad actually.

Joan still looked beautiful live. But anyone can be made to look terrible in a still photograph. A photo doesn't always capture what you look like; it only captures one flicker of a moment and with the wrong lighting and angle, it can be unflattering.
@kev5227

This is amazing so many icons and legends. I was born in 1970 and I live in the UK so I was only 4. But so many wonderful people here. As for Joan Crawford she looks as stunningly beautiful as always. I could listen to her voice for ever. I can’t believe that there were some photographs taken with bad lighting and unflattering angles, that because she saw them later, made want to retire from any sort of public appearance. She looks absolutely radiant here as always. Far too critical of herself. She was still stunning here in every way. She has a smile that light up a room. I love how humble incredibly down to earth she is and how she always made time to speak to anybody that wanted to talk to her. She was such an amazing lady. I so wish I could’ve met her. I discovered her as a boy through my grandmother and have been a huge fan since I was about 10 years old. I really do love your channel as there is so much footage of her that you just don’t find anywhere else. I remember reading once that if she was in a taxi or a car. She would always turn on the interior light to allow any fans who had been waiting outside the venue that she was exiting see her. What a lady, what a star. always there for her fans. Thanks to your channel we get to see the real Joan Crawford. A beautiful, humble, articulate, talented, kind and wonderful lady. Thank you again for your channel it is very much appreciated as it’s all the hard work that you put into it. Sending best wishes for a happy Christmas and a peaceful and healthy 2022 to you from South Wales in the United Kingdom to you. Thank you again

Grizzard also portrayed Blanche's brother-in-law (and lookalike to her late husband) Jamie, in a previous episode. It's kind of a metaphor, in a way. I think Joan would agree: the degraded, garish quality of the cheap b&w videotape in the 70s, versus the lush beautiful artistic cinematography of films in the 30s and 40s. A sense of decay and lowered standards, she would think. Joan really disliked the then-modern world of the 60s and 70s.

(I'm not sure, but maybe Butterfly wasn't that keen to see her anyway?). Anyway, it seems like she hardly changed in 30 years! It's a cool juxtaposition, to see someone you know from movies in the 30s and 40s, and there she is at a glitzy NYC party in 1974. Michael Volbracht is still alive, living in Florida. His 2 claims to fame: he did a very famous Bloomingdale's shopping bag and did the Bill Blass line for a couple of seasons. God, I think it was Juilie Wilson who said she was wearing Norell. I worked for Norman Norell, his sheath dresses were a marvel, and you needed a perfect body. They recently reissued his perfume. HBO started as the Green Channel in 1971. It started testing in 1972 in a handful of places. It did not go 24/7 until 30sep1975. So, as a point of order, yes HBO started before 1974. We were one of the first to get it in 1975. My parents paid $3.00 a month for it. As legacy customers, HBO charged $3 a month until my mother passed away in 2003.

He also did large portraits of Joan and Bette and Lana Turner etc that appeared in a shoe designers windows on 5th avenue between 56th and 57th. Unfortunately, with time , I have forgotten the name of the store. About that time it also had the nude pictures of a pre teen Brooke Shields in their window display. They would probably be arrested if they did that today. I think Candy Pratts was the display director. She went on to Bloomingdales and I think she is now with Vogue Magazine. Those were the days !!!!!.....PS....Can't believe anyone else in the world knew Ria Gam's claim to fame !!!!!

This was the interview where a photo of Joan Crawford and Roseland Russell was in the paper the next day.When Joan saw the photo she called her agent and told him she was now retired and she never went out in public again.

She wasn;t horrible, she had to endure a Horrible mother and against all odds she became a superstar, she had class and beauty, about her drinking and "pill popping".....can you imagine being a beautiful woman in Hollywood at that time?.....talk about sexual harassment, probably alcohol gave her peace.

And getting back at her "horrible mother" by being one to her two older adopted children, a triumphant role reversal.
