You're very welcome! Like I said, there's a difference between becoming a researcher and becoming a medical lab tech. The last one will always be needed as doctors order examinations on body fluid samples or biopsies to diagnose illnesses and follow-up on treatments. The research, yes, indeed, some countries put more national budget into it than others, sadly enough... But don't let that stop you from doing what you want to do and become who you want to become!

The average gross salary in Belgium is 3501 euro (www.vacature.com/nl-be/carriere/salaris/de-opmerkelijkste-resultaten-van-het-salariskompas-2018). The median gross salary is 3100 euro (better estimate, rules out the really 'big fish' ;)). To further clarify: if you're married, and have 2 kids, you get 2237 euro NET salary out of a 3510 gross salary... All data is from a survey from 2018. 2019 numbers will come later ;)

Hi Emma, you're welcome. Uhm, I'm not sure, but I guess (at least here in Belgium) the person ultimately responsible for all clinical lab tests in a hospital for example needs to have an advanced medical degree (MD) or pharmD (literally translated from Dutch it's 'clinical biologist' (klinisch bioloog). I can imagine there would be some sort of sublevel for example the main responsible for hematology who supervises and coordinates a bunch of biomeds, but I'm not sure how this works in detail as I only have experience in research settings and not medical/clinical labs. I suggest that you snoop around on the ibms.org website for more UK relevant info ;)

Hi there! The industry is expanding rapidly as pharmaceutical companies are focusing on maximising on Asian medicine. This has increased the demand of competent Biomedical Science Degree graduates who can research and develop new treatments." I'm going to make a video soon to give more guidance and point out that everyone interested in biomedical science should ask themselves several key questions before choosing it, and choosing a uni! Coming from a small coutry myself (Belgium), it's not straightforward for me to know ALL the specific differences per country. Thanks Dimpi! Glad you find it useful! Biomed engineering has a different focus: it's meant to build, do research on, or even sell medical equipment like stents, catheters, radiation machines, robotic replacement arms, etc. Perhaps even tissue enginzering like 3D printing cells... the focus is on engineering, so more maths! Biomedical science is either clinical lab focused, or research focus, BUT with much more options beyond that (subscribe for future videos to learn more on this!). And honestly, some job position I imagine can be done both with a biomedical engineering degree or a biomedical science degree. It's your base-education. Great video! It's important to note that persons who want to work in the US or Canada should get training there. I have a few friends who qualified as medical technologists with a Bachelor's degrees that had to almost redo there studies to work in Canada. I believe the UK and Germany also prefer EU trained personnel. Correct me if I am wrong, alsjeblieft. ;)
@Biomeducated
@Biomeducated 4 года назад
Thanks, Maria! And thanks for the additional info! Indeed, qualifications may differ per country. In terms of mobility as an MLT, I think it less common. I think most MLTs would consider jobs in their own region, in anearby hospita or research institute or something. I would consider mobility in terms of working more in the scope of Biomedical Researchers. Like doing Master's or PhDs abroad ;) or even postdocs and professor positions. Nevertheless, in my old company there were many nationalities, because Belgium just tends to be a huge leader in Biotech so it attracts, I guess! If you really want to study or work abroad, and get that extra cultural experience, there's always a way! ;)

IIRC, you may be able to to work in UK as a BMS with international qualifications, you just need to get your qualifications assessed by HCPC/IBMS to determine if any supplemental education is required and you may have to work at a lower grade at first than in the previous country. I have worked with plenty of BMS in UK who originally qualified in Africa for instance. From what I have heard, UK trained BMS can work in Canada and Australia relatively easily. I know a couple of BMS who moved to Australia and they just had to take a single expensive exam before they left. However, UK training is apparently completely worthless in USA.

@Biomeducated
@Biomeducated 3 года назад
That is a very good question indeed! I did a quick search to confirm some initial hunches I got: - "Every clinical laboratory needs a laboratory director. Based on the test menu, you will be able to determine if you will be classified by CLIA as a waived, moderate-complexity or high complexity laboratory. If you are a moderate-complexity laboratory, your laboratory director may only need a Bachelor’s degree; however, if you fall into the high-complexity category, you will need either an MD Pathologist or a PhD with a CMS-recognized board certification." www.elitecme.com/resource-center/laboratory/starting-a-lab/ - www.zippia.com/clinical-laboratory-medical-director-jobs/ - study.com/articles/How_to_Become_a_Laboratory_Manager_Education_and_Career_Roadmap.html In essence, I think you indeed can do that! But maybe with atl east a Master's or a PhD. PLUS, you will start a business, you that's entrepreneurship! You will need some business skill essentials too! ;)

@Biomeducated
@Biomeducated 3 года назад
Hi again Yasmine. Clinical Biology is indeed something else. That's a specialization based on a medical degree. Typically these people direct diagnostic medical labs. Hence they manage and direct. The term is indeed often used in France, Belgium and other European countries. I can't immediately find the alternative name that perhaps the rest of the world also uses. If I look at this list from UZ Leuven (Belgium) (www.uzleuven.be/en/physicians-and-specialists/clinical-biologists), these people ofen have dr. or apr. Apr is a pharmacy degree. I'm starting to doubt whether you could start a medical lab fully yourself. Technically, you could perhaps start one, if you hire a clinical biologist to run that lab, understand? To start research labs you indeed need a PhD and get to a Professor position. I'm now starting to doubt whether you could start a medical lab with a PhD and run it on your own. I think as an entrepreneur you could start one, but you would have to hire someone to run it (specifically, a clinical biologist) :)

@Biomeducated
@Biomeducated 3 года назад
@@khanad3247 Hi there! Well there's some things to consider. Perhaps WHERE you live might play a role. In general, life sciences and biotech are increasingly growing as a sector. That's also a place where biomeds can work if they choose not to work in a medical lab (because of the general lab skills). Another thing that plays a role is the level which you graduate: B.Sc, M;Sc or PhD: there's a difference in scope of jobs you can get... Hi there! It depends. MLT is a protected occupation. In the UK 'biomed' can be synonymous to what the rest of the would call a MLT or MLS. However, if your biomed degree is academically focused and launches you to a M.Sc, then usually the accreditation part isn't built in in the program. Take me for example, I'm not allowed to process patient samples for diagnostic reasons in clinical labs, I'm not certified. Make sure to check out what the actual program you're interested in in the particular university will train you for!

Hi there! I tried to find something and found this: www.smltsa.org.za/. However, I'm not sure if South-Africa also equals 'biomed scientist' with MLT as they often do in the UK to describe people working in a medical lab. For research oriented biomedical educations, I don't think there is such a regulatory body. The profession where you handle patient samples for diagnosis is protected by standards of law, regardless of how a country calls these employees (biomedical scientist in the UK, or MLT/MLS in the rest of the world).

If you are looking to work in a lab for routine tests for human diagnostic purposes: you need accreditation. You can check UK accredited uni's/courses on ibms.org. If you want to advance beyond and go more into research or biotech/pharma, perhaps later on as a scientist instead of a lab worker then you don't need the accreditation per se. Specifically for international students I can say that the competition is heavy to get into programs so make sure you stand out in your application!

The salary for a technician is lower than for a technologist. The difference is the former has an Associate's degree, while the latter has a bachelor's.

Hi there! Could you explain what an associate's degree is? Is it the same as a Master's?

@@Biomeducated An Associate in the US is a 2-3 year post-secondary diploma/certificate. It is actually below a 4 year Bachelor's degree. The Medical Lab Technicians go though the Associate route but the Medical Laboratory Scientist/Clinical Lab Scientist/Biomedical Scientists obtain a Bachelor's degree in Medical Laboratory Science/Biomedical Science as the minimum educational standard. It is also noteworthy to state that the general educational standard of the profession is becoming higher as some some schools in some countries such as USA, India, Ghana are beginning to adopt a professional Doctor of Clinical/Medical Laboratory Science (D.CLS/D.MLS) as the entry point into the profession. The aim is to train the analytic Scientist on proper specialized interpretation, review of patient's laboratory data, consultation with other members of the health care team on patient's laboratory information on a case-by-case basis, etc. You can do a research on that and make a video.
@Biomeducated
@Biomeducated 4 года назад
Hi there! Thanks for the input! You even talk about a 4-year bachelor's? Wow. It continues to amaze me just how much differences there are between countries in terms of (even higher) education system organization! I do not believe we have such an associate degree here in Belgium, at least not for medical lab functions! If I know one example that might be comparable it's the nursing degree here: we have A1 and A2 levels, where A2 can only do basic care, but cannot for instance place an infusion needle like A1... The DMLS with specialized interpretation functions is then similar to like a 'lab head' let's say? Because usually it's the physician who makes up a full diagnosis based on the lab stats. If talking about a 'clinical biologist' I think in Belgium most of these are MDs and it's one of the longest specialization routes in medicine I believe, but that's then again still something else as compared to what you mean I suppose. Thanks so much for the insights, will do some more in depth research. If you have any valuable resources already, let me know please. Highly appreciated!

@@Biomeducated In USA MEDICAL LAB TECHNICIAN is an Associates degree, 2 years, and that is the low pay you are describing in the video. Most hospitals will not even hire MLT's. The majority of workers in USA are Medical Lab Scientist who have a bachelors degree and they typically make around 55,000-75,000 USD per year or 90,000-140,000 in California.

@@CJN4737 Thanks so much for these insights! I don't think we have such a thing here to study 2 years (associate's degree). It's good to learn the finer nuances in other countries. I will take note and mention something in the description/ comments and put it on the list to make a video about to dive deeper into it. Do you have any reliable sources that you yourself trust which correctly explains these career tracks in medical labs for the US? If so would you be willing to share, please? Is it wise to do biomedicine in a developing country
@Biomeducated
@Biomeducated 4 года назад
Excellent and very relevant question! Truth is, you must check how much money is spent on healthcare on the one hand if you want to work medically or clincally, and on the other hand you should check if a particular country spends a lot on research and development if you are looking into research or biotech industry. The fact that many people from other parts of the world are competing for phd position or scholarships or company jobs in europe, north-america, china, australia...says enough I think. Also, one developing country might be different from another one in how it spends goverment money on research and education, because maybe the one country is one the rise... in general, degrees outside the western world are often considered 'not enough' to meet standards handled in for example USA or Europe. Perhaps you could start biomed in your country, and do a masters abroad, but these things are highly competitive. It really depends on your purpose later with your degree!

Do they accept biomedical degree holders as MLTs in every country?
@Biomeducated
@Biomeducated 4 года назад
That is a very good question! I will do some research on that! What I can say in general is that if your degree isn't obtained in the country where you want to work, the conditions are usually more strict as in you could have to do additional studying or prove your skills via an exam. I'm talking general now, not specific for a biomedical degree. I will get back to you!

You are from Sri Lanka, right? Any specific countries you are interested in? It will largely depend on which country you would like to move to to work. In most cases, you will need accreditation or some proof of skill. So depending on the biomedical science bachelor you are studying, you will need to check if the focus is MLT or more research of course. Second thing is that you should reach out to the university you have eyes on and ask them directly if you can go work in foreign country with the degree...

@@Nishadi_K This is a handy link for you I think: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Medical_laboratory_scientist. Also, if you really plan on becoming an MLT, I would try to find the educational course that matches that immediately! Also directly ask that colege or university if the accreditation they provide will be valid in US, EU, AUS. Someone will have those very specific answers for you at that institution, they must have! ;)

I'm not quite sure. Maybe here you can find some info: www.aapa.org/career-central/become-a-pa/ Make sure to contact the university where you want to do the PA education and ask if you comply with the prerequisites. I see you need 'healthcare experience', so I'm not sure if what you see in biomed qualifies for these things.

Yeah sure why not, mostly in Uni you start again from the bottom. While it could help to have had more maths, determination and interest can get you through. If you do get any math class (dependent on your uni/country), it will be basics, and further on statistics will become more important!
