As someone who has spent the better part of a 25 year career as an independent contractor working 9-24 months on a job, it can be challenging to present a compelling narrative of experiences that doesn’t look like an unstable job-hopper at first glance. It looks like I’m going to have to let go of those big name businesses and demote them to a line item as a client of my business instead of showing them as an employer.

I had to create a "federal resume" to apply for jobs with the federal government. Among other formatting requirements, the expectation is starting month and year to departure month and year (and hours worked per week). The purpose is to assist HR to discern "creditable experience" to help determine if the candidate is "minimally qualified" in order to make the referral certificate for the hiring manager. Also a six to ten plus page CV full of detail is not out of the ordinary.

Just me, or do resumes feel super outdated in this digital world we live in?
@helenarichard
@helenarichard 3 года назад
Mostly in a world based on short jobs, gig economy... I have 9 jobs in 4 years... It would be stupid of them demanding a 1 page cv and having to list all these short jobs! It's unnecessary to put in irrelevant experience for a specific job, even though the experience is there. If they wanna see the entire list, keep one complete cv. Pick from that for different jobs. I only list my 3 last jobs and only cause I wanna stay in the same industry. I can also just tell them about other job during the actual interview.

Candidates/job seekers need the equivalent of the ATS that employers have.... we need AI to do some of the work for us!!! In this day and age it still amazes me we are writing our resumes up from scratch, and have to look up videos and articles on how to get them to pass ATS and catch the employers eye. But of course that would cost $$$

Is it weird how employers are allowed to know everything about you down to your credit history... but you can't check their staff turnover or their company culture unless they are on glassdoor which most companies are not. Also companies will outright lie in interviews but if you're not 100% honest about your employment history you're almost considered a criminal. This whole thing is incredibly one sided.

I have been a contracted business consultant for 25 years & often these contracts may be as little as 3 - 6 months & to a HR Manager this a pattern of employment instability. I have accepted also accepted full time positions on a few occasions & have used the same systems to establish an employment history. Not everyone reviewing resumes is able to understand industry trends

I just discovered this channel so let me provide an answer. If you are a consultant, we understand that. We have no problem with it. It is not O.K. Consultants by the nature of their business as consultants can even work more than one contracts at the same time. Actually in Canada, the Canada Revenue Agency encourages it so we cannot penalize you. CRA actually is suspicious of Consultants who file tax returns and they have been working contracts too long or cannot show multiple simultaneous contracts. However, for permanent employees, you need to have longer work terms and not move around. That shows an appearance that you are not committed.

Question what do you do if you did a 3 month gig you left it off your resume but when asked to fill out the job application online and they want the months. What do you do at that point? Because if you leave it off it looks like you had an employment gap but if you put on those jobs it looks like your a job hopper and obviously if you’re caught lying on a job application they can fire you for it. And depending on the job you’re applying for it’s illegal. So which is worse to have an employment gap, or look like a job hopper? I feel like between this would be a bit of a lose lose situation.

Hi Don .....You are awesome......out of this word. This is the most helpful video ever. I have a critical question to ask. Usually, when one applies to a company and he intends to not list a position he held by using YEARS instead of months/YEARS, how can he go around the online job application where the resume is uploaded. The online application is programmed with drop-down menus requesting the provision of months/YEARS of employment at each company listed. There will be a discrepancy between the resume and online application. Although the resume is not legally abiding, the online application has legal implication. Can you help solve this dilemma?

the good companies dont care about your resume, many times when im interviewing a candidate i dont even check the resume. I just give out an interview homework that many are unable to do well, even though its a really basic task. For me when i prepare an interview i will end up trolling the candidate instead. It is far easier and time saving to have all candidates do the interview assignment than it is for me to interview each candidate or read their resume.

But if I leave it out, I don't have any experience other than a seasonal 4-month job at a clothing store pre-pandemic. But it may give me a chance to at least get an interview. Hello Mr. Georgevich. Are you sure that background checks wouldn't be able to uncover a past employer? I ask because ever since i got fired from my three month teaching job in November 2019, i have been including that job in my resume because of all the conflicting information i have found in the internet, some saying that background checks will inevitably uncover anything in the teaching field and ruin me if i am caught lying. Just go for it, what do you have to lose? If they say no, move on. I suggest doing a good deed every day to help someone else, in some way, that has to do with your field. Experience some inner “wins”, where someone appreciates you for what you’ve done. Example, if your a financial guy, do someone’s taxes because they need help, if your a cook and you fix extra, give to your neighbor, whatever you do, find a way to bless someone else with that gift... you will bring good vibes to yourself and others.

Automated hiring software is mistakenly rejecting millions of viable job candidates. For example, some systems *automatically reject candidates with gaps of longer than six months in their employment history,* without ever asking the cause of this absence. It might be due to a pregnancy, because they were caring for an ill family member, or simply because of difficulty finding a job in a recession.

I like your content but I do not agree that you leave months off. No no no! I need to see everyone's months. That may be for the USA but if you are applying to Canadian jobs, you better have those dates on Sir. I find that writing a resume depends on where you are sending it. There is no cookie cutter way. Especially we are sending resumes to the Feds in Canada, we have to demonstrate the timing.
