Many consider the Oahu Club Men's Night Doubles a good warm-up event for the eventual Kailua Racquet Club Men's Night Doubles, one of the Crown Jewels of tennis in Hawaii. The Oahu Club tournament, however, is also a highly respected & prestigious event as it is one of three major tournaments that make the annual Triple Crown of Men's Tennis (aka Men's Night Doubles series). Year after year, this tournament heeds not only an early scout for who might be playing together in the Kailua tournament, but it is also another chance for players to grab a Night Doubles crown, which any player in Hawaii would love to have! The Oahu Club also consists of cushioned hard-courts, specially designed to impart less stress on a player's body as they chase down ball & ball.
In 2013, familiar faces littered the Night Doubles field but we also saw the rise of new doubles teams & partnerships on the court! One of those newly formed teams was Rong Ma & Jared Spiker. Rong, no stranger to the tournament scene, had started to participate regularly in local high profile events around the state. One title however that had been eluding him to up this point was a Men's Night Doubles championship. So he teamed up with then University of Hawaii Men's Tennis player Jared Spiker, a local star who had previously won two HHSAA state singles championships for Kalani High School. Jared was mostly known for his singles game but he showed that he was worthy of the doubles court as well, moving up the ranks very quickly both as a Rainbow Warrior & a local baller.
On the other side of the court stood two familiar faces to the Night Doubles scene, Ikaika Jobe & Michael Wojnarowicz. Ikaika, no stranger to winning championships at this point, was gunning to add another prestigious title to his ever-growing assembly of tournament victories. His partner, Michael Wojnarowicz, was currently serving a Teaching Pro at the Oahu Club, making for a perfect opportunity to team up for a common goal. Michael may not have made the Tennis Ninja highlights very much as of late but these videos are coming as Mike proves his talent & grit with his racquet! Michael served as the top-ranked player for Loyola Marymount University in his hey-day & even has a bit in one of Tennis Channel's "1-minute Clinic" videos, demonstrating how a player can improve his serve. We'll see if we can find a link to that video for you! ;-)
