We don't think it's a good idea to go for any management degree without work experience. It ends up as another theoretical degree with very little real learning.

Many MBA grads manage to change their industry, role and country after graduating from a top bschool. Which means, your brother doesn't need to limit himself to mining companies. Ask him to check out our videos on MBA specialisation and MBA in Canada, USA, Germany, Singapore etc to get a better idea.

Management consulting welcomes candidates from a wider range of pre-MBA backgrounds than the industry specific companies you've listed. And they don't expect the same level of industry specific skills that (say) a top tech player might insist on.

Hi Ghanshyam, yes you can go for an MBA in USA after 2 years. The more you delay, the more you'll move away from the class average age/experience for American programs. Of course you can still consider 1-year MBA in other countries, where the student age is higher. We're not visa experts, but we think you can't hold two visas. You'll get an F1 and your H1B will expire. And if you've already used up your OPT during MS, you may not get it again. But best to verify this from other sources too.

Why not work for a few years and become more conversant with how the business world works, before taking up a business degree? That way you'll also have better clarity about the area of specialisation.

The right approach is to evaluate your career goals first, and then choose the appropriate program to get you there. If you haven't thought about it and are just looking for an answer, you may end up with a degree that doesn't help.

The compensation published by bschools are generally gross salaries (sometimes including signing amounts and bonuses), that don't take into account any deductions.

In theory, yes that's what an MBA is expected to do. Improve chances and open up more doors. The extent to which that will happen will depend on lot of variables - MBA brand, recruiters, network...and most importantly your ability to convince your new employer that you'd be ready to hit the ground running.

Unless you are able to connect the dots between what you've done (SCM) and what you want to do (2 distinct disciplines), it may end up confusing to the recruiter. Make sure you get that clarity first.

The question will surely come up in the minds of your prospective recruiters. As long as you build the skills and knowledge to convince them that your Arts background doesn't make you a less effective operations manager, you'll do fine. Most of what's taught in Engineering also ends up being theory anyway. So, focus on the practical takeaways from the MBA.

There are opportunities in both. Singapore is a small city/country, compared to France. But you also have to consider other factors such as cost of living, climate etc to decide which country works better for you.

There are many other things that companies look for while hiring CEOs. Qualification is just one aspect. More important is the ability to think big and help the company move in that direction.

Rome Business School isn't a globally ranking bschool. So it's unlikely that US recruiters may have heard of it. Also, for PhD it helps to have a research oriented masters first, rather than an MBA. It's better to take a step back and do the groundwork and research before moving ahead.

Not sure which ranking you're referring to. We use Financial Times Global MBA ranking. Regardless of the ranking, the reputation of a program doesn't generally carry much weight in a different country. Compared to MS programs, an MBA is a more practical in nature and less academic. Talk to others from your country who've successfully transitioned to the US. They may be able to better explain the challenges they faced.

Generally devops roles are meant for technical / engineering graduates. MBAs typically go for managerial position. But there's no hard-and-fast rule that says you can't do what you like. If devops is what you want, go for it. Just make sure you aren't pushing yourself into a niche that'll be difficult to get out of.

Instead of two masters degrees (MS and MBA), why not go for just one with the longest term benefit when you're ready?

Seems like you missed the message we were trying to convey. If you're convinced about it and think you have enough time, money and resources to do both, go ahead. We just don't think everyone needs both.

While the focus of the program is on those who want to start their own business, or work in their family business, it also has opportunities to work with a company. But if that's your primary intention, it would be better to choose a degree that's more aligned with your career goals (assuming entrepreneurship isn't on the cards).

Our recommendation is to work for a few years after graduating, before considering an international MBA. That way you'll have more clarity on where you want to take your career.

Consulting firms recruit at different levels based on the degree. MiM grads can be consider for the starting level positions (analysts), whereas MBA grads start at the associate/consultant level.

While starting out, try not to be too choosy about the salary, company, role. Finding the first job can be very difficult but one's got to start somewhere and then work your way up. And don't lose confidence. It's only a matter of time before you can the right break. But for that you'll need to keep trying.

That's a pretty broad and open-ended question that's tough to answer without knowing much about you and your aspirations. What options have you considered so far? Which IIM program did you complete and when?

Assuming you had done your research before starting the program, have those goals changed now? If not, why not pick up the threads from the pre-COVID days and continue working on making them a reality. Your 12 years of banking (retail or ibanking?) experience should come in handy if you aren't planning to switch tracks.

You'll have to be a bit more patient and work for a year or two more. Use the time to build your profile. We have a separate video on that on our channel.

For certain 'elite' industries and jobs - like consulting and investment banking - a top MBA is almost a non-negotiable if you want to rise, or even get in. But for the other areas, where technical skills matter more (like programming), your experience would be valued more than an MBA. Unless its for a managerial role, where you're competing with other MBA grads.

As a general rule, we think it's important for management students to have some work experience. Many universities skip that requirement and draw a lot of freshers. However, be aware that it's always difficult to get a job as an international applicant in a foreign country. More so when the candidate has no practical experience that the employer can use. Better to go for one degree instead of dual degrees. Btw, JCU MBA isn't ranked among the top by reputed MBA rankings.

We don't know the answer to that. Maybe a recruiter in Australia would be better positioned to respond, since they know what works and what doesn't. Just be careful with your expectations.

For all the good international MBA programs, yes you will need experience. And yes, you can take electives in finance and HR.

We'll start off with the disclaimer that this is a very industry + role specific query that's best addressed by someone from the company you plan to work with. Having said that, a lot would depend on the product you're selling and what the client wants. Using (or worse, force-fitting) humour in every single ad wouldn't be the best approach. More so if you plan to target companies that work across a wide range of industries, promoting a diverse spectrum of products/services. Here's another point to be aware of. If you plan to go for an elite MBA program assuming it'll help you break into creative roles, you are likely to be disappointed. Your post-MBA employer would most likely be looking for someone to manage the business side, leaving the purely creative work to another team. And that won't be such a bad thing either. More than the client ads, the corporate world can use a little humour too. It takes itself too seriously.

Almost all good MBA programs insist on several years of work experience. Since you're still studying , it would be prudent to be patient and focus on building a strong profile after graduation. If you have personal reasons for not being able to wait till you're competitive for international programs, then you can choose CAT options (like 2 year IIM programs).

Your long term career goals should influence the decision of what you should study and in which country. It's not a good idea to rely on what others think.

Thanks for clarifying. If the MBA brand isn't opening doors for you, one option is to do what any regular job hunter will do. Rely on your existing (pre-MBA) skills and experience to filter out jobs. That way you will still have something to offer hiring companies beyond the degree. And be flexible in terms of the role and salary. Reach out to executive search firms to see if they have opportunities for you.

Hi Irfan, Hats off to you for juggling work and studies. It's tough to manage both at the same time. Going by theory, Sales is a subset of Marketing. So, you'd be able to build up on the sales experience you have and move up the ladder to take on a broader marketing role. Of course, that doesn't mean Finance is ruled out. But you'll have to start from the ground up, and it could be a longer and steeper curve. Choose the path that interests and excites you more.
