Umemployment numbers dont take into account the people who are unemployed but didnt file. Its a BS statistic.

After a certain amount of time without a job, no one will hire you.

Then there is the fact that, the longer you go without the job you were experienced at, the less valuable your years of experience becomes. Eventually, you become unemployable in the job you once made a living from for decades. This happened to me, and after unsucessfully trying to transition to other work, plus being fired (along with my boss) from the only work I could find, I was left with no recourse to unemployment benefits. Thus, I was without an income for a year and a half, living with my cousin while continuing to look for employment. Finally, when I turned 62, I retired on my Social Security (the promised return of the taxes collected from my wages during my working life). The next step was to find subdidized housing where I could live on my Social Security. Starbucks baristas are paid more than I am.

Yeah I agree. It is the same way government has been getting around most privacy laws. It is easier and faster to pay Facebook and Google for all the dirt than get a warrant.

Insurance companies will only raise premiums if courts award larger damages in injury cases. The insurance companies have no real say. They have to accept the value that judges place on life and conduct their business accordingly. It will be judges who price people out of driving.

That and younger people today tend to drive far less than those of the last few generations. Driving meant freedom to us. Sadly, freedom is not an idea that many young people value right now. But there was a time when nobody had a car and I can't say those were the worst times. I guess we'll see.

Which I hate. Because not all progress is automatically good. Nor is it a mandatory and inevitable march. There is such thing as too much of a good thing or some tech having so many downsides that make the upsides not worth long run. Like look at how many people become the worst of humanity with social media apps just for clicks, AI being pushed just adds to the issues we have currently as it is.

Are you sure about that? I know that in Europe they mandated to have an onboard camera that will monitor your face and body position, a green certificate that will communicate outside info's regarding your car, a green fencing that will force your car to avoid restricted areas, after each driving cycle the car must communicate certain informations to a server fir authorities and now they think to put a battery passport but I didn't see anything mandatory regulation to put a Killswitch.

The problem is that without those entry level jobs you won't have the pipeline to grow the experts that will need to deal with complicated problems that the AI can't handle.

Honestly I beleive having no entry level jobs makes one have a harder time to do any jobs at all. Like no experience to start with.

Finding meaning and staying healthy is something for individuals to figure out. Not government.

Well by ATMs, not ATM machines. Ever see a bank an hour before closing or non-preak hours? One teller and a line to the ATM. That wasn't the case 30 years ago, there was always 2+ tellers ALL DAY. Plus online banking does almost everything, including depositing antiquated checks.

@@DeAthWaGer Gotta agree with you on the online banking. In the 32 years I've been alive, I've only ever written five physical checks. Everything else is done electronically. It's faster, cheaper, more accurate, and more secure. Technology renders going to a physical bank nearly obsolete.

There are tellers at the bank? I would have never known. Let's see, I get direct deposit for my paycheck, I use my credit card for every purchase (but pay in full every month), never needing cash for anything, but on the rare occasion that I do, I can use an ATM. If I get a check for Christmas, I can take a picture of it to deposit it. I almost never have to set foot in a bank or even go in the drive-thru.

We had a colleague that retired. He worked his whole life for a company. When he started they didn't had any computers all was done by hand. During his life he adapted to technology, learned a foreign language and many other things. I can't imagine how the world will look like when I will retire considering that when I was born the computers with cassette have been a thing, internet didn't existed...

I didn't need to stop working, drive somewhere to find they were out of stock so on to the next store. Saved me much time, fuel and stress. @@bluestorm9651 agreed. I stopped going to the Mall long before I started using Amazon... probably 10 years before. Malls are highly inefficient use of retail space and most of them lack character. I went to a Mall for the first time in 3 years just a few weeks ago because I needed my eyeglasses repaired and the closets shop was there. Had I been closer to a stand-alone, I would've gone there instead.

The internet was definitely a thing and used by millions of people from around the world before the World Wide Web was created.

AI's reach is far and wide, it doesn't need a pension, sick pay, etc. That logic worked for automation in retail, it will work the same (even if only by downsizing employment numbers) in engineering, healthcare, education, hospitality, etc. Few, if any sectors of our economies will be left untouched and that's the problem. Even the dishwasher has been replaced with a machine in large restaurants...

@@LoremIpsum1970 Engineering, healthcare, education, hospitality, etc, are all industries screaming for more employees. Reducing the need for some of those jobs is a good thing. Especially as it will reduce costs, which is especially good for healthcare. May even improve the results in education. We may or may not ever reach a tipping point but I think it's unlikely we will. For us to hit that point, the majority of people would have to be unemployed. There would be no impetuous to have more AI and automation at that point, because it won't be worth it.

Exactly, I been telling people this for a very long time. I been an electrical engineer for almost 25 years and I knew it was only a matter of time, I did not expect it to go as fast at it has, but I also did not accept the idea that it would never happen.

I don't know if you've not been paying attention but the money seems to be flowing in one direction and I don't see that stopping anytime soon. Reducing the lack of staff removes another sector that you can't retrain for... Remember in the 20th century we were promised automation would free up our leisure time as if it were a benefit. That never happened as all we did was work more to produce more. That's why some are now promoting UBI, they want this to happen...

@@Nanobits I work in technical graphics in engineering, I certainly see a reduction in staffing with no loss of capacity being the selling point. So far I've not seen much in the way of automation except for simple framing, but eventually, something good enough will appear, and I hope I've retired by then!

I've seen many videos with Tesla's Full Self Driving which have avoided collisions that the driver did not anticipate. I've also seen the failures. As an Augment to the human driver, an A.I. driving assist would seem to be the best of both worlds.

@@mikewurlitzer5217 right before retiring a few years ago, the company I drove semi-trucks for, were getting new trucks with that kind of assistance. don't know if they've worked the bugs out but going into a single lane construction zone with K rails on both sides, where the speed limit was still 55mph, the truck would freak out and lockup the breaks, not good when you're not expecting it.

They'll just jack up the tax rate on owning the vehicle to compensate. And tax the electricity you use to charge it. (No gas tax. Gas vehicles will be outlawed.)

Humans create robots to outsmart humans🤯. How many times we have outsmarted ourselves in the past, without issues successfully. How many times failed? Why we were successful, and why we failed? Statistics can be manipulated, past history cannot be. Just something to think about🤔.

There's a big part that isn't that, there's already many who are losing their jobs to artificial intelligence. And based on the current patterns we're observing it doesn't seem to be getting any worse. this is like saying a medicine doesn't work well and won't replace an existing treatment even though it might only be in the testing stages and still has many problems that need to be worked out. Point is that it simply doesn't make sense to think of AI as being just what it is right now. You need to look at the bigger picture and think 5 years ahead. Your argument is quite simply that AI won't replace a lot of jobs in the near future because it's still not good enough for now. And I agree with that point. However what irks me is that you speak as though you know the future and that you know AI isn't gonna improve and go beyond its current limitations. It won't even be a matter of decades. I agree with this. Having them regulate it will just destroy it. But there needs to be something happening. There will be millions without jobs and it's not just a matter of just changing careers because every single industry/work/finance is being reduced because of AI. AI is literally like creating an artificial being that can replace what humans do. That is Not the same as aiding a human like a Forklift. So what would have to happen is UBI and stuff like that. It's supposed to benefit humanity right. It doesn't if it creates starvation for a huge group of people with no means to gain income to feed and house themselves. So it will be this weird part of a huge swath just getting paid to do nothing.

Definitely not. 30 years ago I started working with CNC machines. At the time I was told that this technology will be easier than traditional machining,but few years later I ended up working with 5 CNC machines simultaneously,and lifting 5 times more,due to efficiency and speed of those machines.

We should just let it happen, people already complain about their mediocre jobs and often compare it to slavery. The thing people don't understand is that the problem will bring light to the necessity of human value. The problem with A.I. is already baked into the code. The leftist agenda has already shown its influence in the output of Chat and other A.I. engines. Those A.I. engines which rely on Google searches of the internet are by definition already contaminated with leftist ideology.

It's possible in the future for sure. It's likely companies already have the AI to do everything you just said. But the issue people are misunderstanding is that any company abusing AI like that is not worth working for. To answer your question, for example a sound engineer would currently have to work 80 hours a week to do what he currently does, whereas with AI he would only cut that time by half. McDonald's workers may just have to operate the cash registers and clean the places.

I don't see AI taking over programming jobs, because even in the worst-case scenario you'd need someone to tell the AI exactly what kind of a program it should create. And that's essentially a form of programming, only instead of talking directly to a compiler you're writing instructions for what more or less amounts to a transpiler. Even then, LLMs aren't really capable of understanding things. They're limited in what kind of code they can produce, and I don't see them replacing developer jobs beyond juniors any time soon.

@@Diapolo10 Yep, I've been a software engineer since 2004, and I dabbled in programming as far back as the 1980s. Coding is the lowest-level IT job, aside from Help Support. Since the 80s, we've developed code generators that make it possible to say, draw a square on the screen. It used to take a competent programmer about 10 minutes to correctly line up, size the box, then bang out the code to make it actually appear. Today, you drag and drop a box on the screen, and with a mouse click or two you position it and size it. Takes 10 seconds. It's not exactly AI, but the tool creates all the code for you to achieve the result of what you want. AI won't know how, where or, why to position and size the square though. A human mind has to tell it that. The difference is now you can create thousands of lines of code that would've taken a week or more in just a few minutes. It avoids the laborious drudgery of banging out repetitive lines of code over and over.

"A single executive ordering a program like she's ordering a pizza" might sound fine on the surface, but the end result can be something completely different from what said executive had in mind if they're not thorough enough. In a business you're writing software to meet some specific end goal, not something that sort of meets the requirements. You also need to factor in maintenance. Software is rarely ever complete, changes need to be made over time - if you just give a large language model the same prompt with a few tweaks the new program can look and feel completely different from the original, changing things even if you didn't intend for that to happen. A single executive with zero programming experience wouldn't be able to do anything about that at all. Also worth considering security vulnerabilities, and the resulting licensing hell.

farm tractors can self drive for sure, using gps and planned routes. for like nearly the last 10 years. check video from this recent CES, there was a company pitching an autonomous tractor, farmer can control from an app to do specific task interventions otherwise it just does a pre-specificed task

Book I read back in middle school went over something similar except the ruling people did reject the introduction of the lightbulb because it would put the candle makers out of work. Some story about a guy born into a stagnant society that decides everything you do breaking free to decide for himself and wanting to help others in that society break free as well.

My 45 year old son has never had a driver's license. He rides public transit or has his wife cart him around. He's not lazy at all. Works for the post office and pretty much does everything at home. He just has never had a desire to drive. Meanwhile, his two brothers have destroyed every car I've ever given or sold to them.

It's not easy to predict future innovations and the jobs they create. When the horse and buggy was getting replaced with automobiles, no one at that time knew there would be a whole cottage industry of jobs created around cars. Window tinting, after market body customization, lift kits, bumper stickers, custom stereos, body wraps, custom upholstery, microchip manufacturing, quick oil change shops, detail shops, speed trap revenue, rubber tire manufacturing, the list goes on. Not to forget way more jobs exist in manufacturing cars themselves then was ever needed for a horse buggy.

This is true. Businesses should not be forced to provide jobs by the government. But businesses cannot survive without sales. And if businesses are not providing jobs, no one has money to buy the products and services of a business. If I see two products on a store shelf. One product is made by a company that employs many people and the other product is made by a very small team of people and an army of robots. I'm going to buy from the company who is giving people jobs.

No jobs = no money = no business.

@@adrianminjares7310 I agree and its definitely a balance that goes back and forth. But the best way to keep things from going too crazy is to let businesses regulate themselves in this arena. the economics of employment in all areas of business is too complex to be centrally planned by a government. The market can react much quicker if they start moving too far in any direction.

I know a guy who worked on medical informatics and this was almost a decade ago. Even then, a computer program was more likely to successfully diagnose a patient and provide them with appropriate remedies.

@cp1cupcake What happens to the human brain when it uses a computer program as a crutch to this extent? Artificial intelligence will only make it worse. Necessity is the most effective motivation for self-improvement . When there is no necessity for a human to improve his own skills, then he loses that motivation.

You're welcome to rural Montana and take up subsistence farming. I hear AI isn't interested in that.

Software can have problems, but weak software is generally the result of poor testing and early release of known buggy stuff. Also, software for a desktop has no real standards wrt safety. Software for things like aircraft flight controls, heart pacemakers, and driverless cars is treated differently. Some of the methodology for web and desktop software (ship it and the customers can be the testers, over and over) would amount to criminal negligence in life critical systems. Such systems are necessarily made more reliable and more tolerant of adverse conditions, and tested, tested, tested.

I agree that humans will adapt but “more affordable?” Has your products not been outsourced to become “more affordable.” Has prices not risen? The only thing that’s “affordable” in life is garbage/obsolete technology. It should be more affordable, yes, if things worked as it should but companies inflate prices because they know the consumers will still pay for it. Edit: and sadly they cant keep up with government inflation
