Jocat's Crap Guide to Dungeons and Dragons Reaction 

Jocat somehow juggles being important to three different fandoms. Final Fantasy 14, Monster Hunter, and DnD. We're lucky to have him.

Fun fact: Jocat's wiggly head is made from a Wiggler, in other words an eel-like creature that stays comfortably underground if provoked, and it is from Monster Hunter World as well as his clothing being part of what he uses in-game for his other Crap Guide series, Crap Guide to Monster Hunter World!

As a DM I had a player playing a wild magic sorcery. She rolled the "Roll on this table once each turn for the next 10 turns." Over the course of that she turned purple, had bubbles come out of her mouth when she spoke, made 5 illusionary copies of herself, and then finally turned into 5 potted plants...

There’s actually an entire love story between the bard and paladin happening over the course of this series, culminating in their marriage in the warlock video.

Well... This came out at an interesting time for D&D.

Percy is actually a fighter with a homebrewed subclass called the "gunslinger" created by their dm Matt Mercer.

Percy is actually a fighter. Specifically he is a homemade fighter that Matthew Mercer came up with called gunslinger. He had a really high Intelligence even as a stat on the character sheet, that’s how he was able to create a gun. Also I believe that demon Orthax was involved as well, you know like whispering into his ear.

That wizard teacher that Jocrap (the buff guy. The normal human is Jocat) argued with and destroyed the building of is a guy called Zee Bashew! He's an awesome RU-vidr that does stuff on D&D with a lot of them talking about the mechanics of the games and he has a series called "Animated Spellbook" where he covers a lot of spells and he does some awesome animations to accompany them. His work is incredibly underrated and has maybe 2 reactions to his stuff so I'd love to see you guys react to his stuff too! You could do a compilation video or a few on his stuff like this one! It'd be really cool to see! Bone Wizard is badass to and whilst he doesn't have many videos the ones he has had on "how to buff blank" are fun and have good animations to them as well and some hysterical humour! It'd be nice to see a reaction or two for his stuff too. Davvy Chappy has done similar stuff to Jocat and has made his own music though he doesn't animate things BUT he does cover the "Blood Hunter" which Jocat never did cover so a reaction to that would be best as well. All of these channels are great and I think it'd just be nice to see them given attention frankly. So I wouldn't really mind which one you end up checking out as long as you hopefully look into one of them! Edit: Oh yeah and don't forget that Jocat made one of these for being the Dungeon Master!

Ye so Vox Machina's classes are: Grog: Barbarian Pike: Cleric Vex: Ranger Vax: Rogue Scanlan: Bard Keyleth: Druid Percy: Gunslinger (A subclass for Fighter that Matt Mercer created)

As a forever dungeon master, that was fairly accurate. But any of it can change drastically depending on the campaign setting you use. He was using the Forgotten Realms setting for all his examples here. Which is a truly ironic name at this point since there's nothing "Forgotten" about it anymore. LoL :P

If you're interested in getting into D&D now is unfortunately not the best time, the folks at Wizards of the Coast have unfortunately been making some changes that are not great for the community, and while we hope these changes will be undone for the time being it's worthwhile to maybe check out some other tabletop RPGs, like Pathfinder or Kobold Press's upcoming "Project: Black Flag" there are also hundreds of independently published RPGs like MASKS, Slayers, FATE, and Lancer that are all worth checking out if you're interested in getting into the hobby.

Percy actually isn't an artificer, he's actually a class from another game called Pathfinder that doesn't exist in D&D, but they adapted it for D&D. He is a gunslinger class. If you had to fit him into a D&D class, it'd be a strange mix of artificer and ranger, I think. PS: If you guys do enter a D&D game, I'd love for the sessions to be filmed and uploaded for us to see.

Thanks for reactiing to it ! My dungeon master recommended them to me back when I was about to play D6D for the first time. He recommended to look at the flavor of the classes over the actual mechanics and go with what feels like the most inspring and fun.

i think what works so well about dnds character creation is the ability to differentiate races and classes with a few very focused options per race and class, you could still have a party of human fighters and fill atleast ten different niches just with which weapons you choose to use, which items you have, subclasses and the options you get for bonuses depending on them, this point is exemplified by the fact that a gimmick that lots of dnd liveplays use is all playing one class to see how different they can be made both gameplay wise and character wise

I must say as a dnd player, its so fun, you dont even need to play in person, theres online versions, and theres so much possibilities, you two should play one day!

Even as an "old school veteran" of D&D (I started playing "Basic" D&D and 1st Edition in the 80s) this stuff is STILL very informative as well as entertaining. JoCat is great! Glad you reacted to him.

DnD has been a big part of my life for couple of years now and I absolutely love it! I've been running my own campaign for little over a year now too! As for myself, my current "main" character I play is a dragonborn warlock! I'm in kinda of funny situation right now, since I got a sentient, good aligned trident and my warlocks great old one patron is neutral evil... let's see which magical power gets to say the last word with her :'D

Oh, this video reminds me of several DND campaigns and a certain DM with a couple group of people with a world that starts with the letter V and an enemy of a certain color and it just breaks my heart of the wasted potential of what could've been 😭

A fantastic video series giving a brief summary for people who want to get into D&D! I highly recommend checking out the Character Sheet video, as it gives you pretty much all the necessary info to making a character of your own. Also coming from Vox Machina (and other Critical Role Campaigns in general), I do know the classes of all the characters Scanlan = Bard Grog = Barbarian/Fighter Multiclass (Basically you can mix and match classes but by doing so you miss out on some of the end game benefits a pure class would have) Keyleth = Druid Pike = Cleric Vex'ahlia = Ranger/Rogue Multiclass Vax'ildan = Rogue/Paladin/Druid Multiclass Percy = Fighter

If I am correct Percy is actually a gunslinger. It is a class that existed in previous editions that Matt home brewed over to 5e. It is kind of like a fighter from memory

Aahhh love it!!! If you guys are getting into dnd stuff I have a suggestion! It's the animated recaps that critical role did for their second campaign. Unlike their first and third campaigns it dosen't include too many spoilers for vox machina. They are bite sized animated recaps of a couple episodes at a time. It's narrarated by their official lore keeper Dani Carr. I love them and haven't seen much reactions for them if any.

Percy is a gun slinger that is a class that was made by Matt Mercer, cause when they first started there game they were playing pathfinder and moved to DnD there was no gun class so they made it for Percy.

Barbarian is a great class. Picked Path of Wild Magic. Advantage on Initiative, Advantage on Dex checks (most traps) that you can see while not blinded, Advantage on STR checks while enraged, Advantage on attacks (reckless attack), take 1/2 damage from non-magical attacks while enraged.... It's a great class. My current group is 2 Barbarians, 1 Paladin/Warlock, 1 Druid, 1 Rogue. Most of the party used Intelligence as a dump stat, so we called ourselves "Hunks of Metal."

You can find game openings to crash on Roll20. I think more folks run games on virtual tabletops now since for a while, the pandemic prevented folks from sitting at the table together. All of the games I am running are on Roll20 now so that we can play with folks we have met from other states. You can find games for beginner players that way as well. It's a fun and inexpensive way to relax and be creative.

As you are most familiar with Legend of Vox Machina/Critical Role campaign 1, the characters are (and this is early campaign so as to not spoil anything like multiclassing): --Grog is a Goliath (half giant) Barbarian, Bezerker --Scanlan is a Gnome Bard, College of Lore (more skills and magical knowledge) --Pike is a Gnome Cleric, War Domain --Keyleth is a Half-Elf Druid, Circle of the Moon (the shapeshifting specialists) --Percy is actually a HumanFighter, Gunslinger type (which was a custom subclass based on the Pathfinder Gunslinger class, which was basically a fighter that made and shot guns) --Vex is a Half Elf Ranger, Beastmaster (Where she gets Trinket, though when it came out she was using the old, useless version of beastmaster which is why she mostly was an archery boss) --Vax is a Half Elf Rogue, Assassin

Percy is a Gunslinger Fighter, which is a subclass they made up because there's not actually a gun class. Their campaign started in Pathfinder and when they swapped to DnD 5E they had to shuffle things. Grog is a Barbarian, obvious is obvious. Pike is a Cleric, Scanlan's a Bard, Keyleth is a Druid. Vax is a Rogue, specifically assassin rogue, and Vex is a Beastmaster Ranger, hence why she has Trinket.

Percy from Vox Machina is a fighter! He uses a custom subclass called Gunslinger(created by the DM Matthew Mercer), and tinkers and invents stuff like an artificer would. The artificer class wasn't added at the start of Vox Machina's campaign, but was added about halfway through it.

And his wiggler hat wich is an event item optainable in monster hunter world that immitates the Wigglers found in one of the games areas. There are several guest appearances from other D&D content creators, Puffin Forest--look up Abserd, you'll find it. Zee Bashew- does short vids that go over nitty gritty of spells and things. And Dingo Doodles, who is an incredible story teller who has been animating one of their campaigns for the past several years and It is just..awesome. Highly recommend checking them out. (always worth shooting them a message and asking if its cool to react to first as well)

Most of the Critical role crew is easy to tell their class. Vex is a ranger, Vax is a rogue, Grog is a barbarian, Pike is a cleric, Kelith is a druid, Scanlan is a bard, and Percy is a pathfinder class called gunslinger. If you like watching the Critical role show, I highly recommend watching videos comparing certain scenes from the tv show to the scenes from the original campaign. Often times they have to cut out extra funny bits that were in the original for time, but are absolutely worth going and checking out. I would especially recommend the episode Scanbo, where Scanlan goes ham on that one house in Whitestone. The original video is amazing!

Alright so, if nobody has told you what's going on, Wizards of the Coast is the company that prints the main rule books and some campaigns for DnD. For the last decade or so 5th Edition has been chugging along, gaining a lot of popularity because of the lockdowns, but also because of 3rd party publishers and Critical Role producing fantastic content. Those last two things is made possible by a legal document that WoTC made 20 years ago called the Open Game Liscence (OGL), which basically states that people and companies are free to make their own content and sell it, DnD is best when it's open for people to be able to create and flourish. And then WoTc had a change in corporate management and the leaks started from employees who were extremely upset about the direction the company and franchises were going towards. The new corporate management team basically views customers as obstacles between them and our money, that DnD is "under-monetized." Leaked documents showing changes to the OGL that would take a 25% cut of the revenue of any third party company publishing material for DnD, that WoTC can come and hand anyone making their own content for DnD, hand you a cease and desist letter and then publish your ideas themselves without giving you anything. Kickstarter confirmed the leak was true, WoTC had negotiated and deal with Kickstarter for WoTC to only take 20% from any Kickstarter campaign since Kickstarter already takes a precentage. Now you might be thinking "that sucks but it is their product to do with as they please. Except it's not, not really. The Supreme Court ruled back in the 1800s that you can copyright the phrasing or the exact printing of a document explaining a process but you can't copyright a process itself, which includes the rules of a game. Ever play Words With Friends? We all know it's Scrabble but they're allowed to do what they're doing because while you can copyright the name Scrabble and the exact rules as printed, the concept itself can't actually be owned. Then came more leaks. The big ones being that WoTC doesn't care what their customers think, they'll just seemingly walk back what was in the new OGL, wait for the community outrage to die down and then do whatever they wanted anyway. That their next edition of DnD would be mainly released in DnD Beyond, their newly aquired online character creator and campaign management program, the subscription of which would be jacked up to $30/month. And of course, any homebrew or 3rd party content would be banned. I'm sure there's more but my table and I switched to Pathfinder, the rival system to DnD and haven't looked back. Mainly because of what Paizo, the company that created Pathfinder said in response to all of this. In a nutshell that the OGL cannot legally be altered, but fine, if WoTC wants to act like this then fine, Paizo alongside a pile of now former 3rd party DnD publishers are creating their own Open RPG Creative Liscence (ORC) that will replace the OGL which none of them will actually own. Ownership will be passed off to a nonprofit organization that believes that TTRPGs should be open for anyone to create whatever they want. You can certainly play DnD if you want, the rules of every edition that has ever been created are out and about on the internet. In the comfort of your own home you are free to play the game using any 3rd party or home brew that you want and there's not a damn thing the WoTC can do about it. Just don't live stream your game, otherwise there's a possibility of WoTC knocking on your door handing you a cease and desist saying that you have 30 days to hand over 25% of any revenue made off of that stream. As for me and my table, we'll be playing Pathfinder using the rulebook that Paizo provides free of charge on the internet.

Percy is a weird case because he'd probably be an artificer except the class didn't exist when the character was made. Instead they homebrewed a fighter sub class (that later became an official one) since as others have pointed out the gunslinger was from pathfinder. Though due to the story Percy became a combination of a fighter, artificer, and warlock. Not sure if the warlock part of his abilities will come into play in LoVM since he got rid of his pact in season 1 but Talisan ended up taking the feat (getting a bonus special skill instead of a stat boost at level up) in Eldridge adept, when grants one of the warlocks specific features to his character.

WOTC has had to take back changes to the open licence for the rules for D&D, but we will all have to wait for that too come out. But that said have not played D&D for a couple of year and we played 3rd edition, now it's CoC (Call of Cthulhu) or Alien. Do not know if you know but there is a video he does in song for the races you can play. So you both STAY SAFE and have a great day. 👍
