What's great about the video is that all of these colorful characters were played by "known" D&D RU-vidrn. It's rly cool to see how many people contributed to this.

Fun fact. The sentence "You can certainly try" is a line used by most dm's whenever a player wants to do something improbable, unorthodox, or just difficult. It really incapsulates the endless possibilities of DnD, while still keeping a realism of a setting intact. Even if you get the highest roll possible, your character can't do some things, just like how it isn't possible for normal people to do some things, but just like in real life, you should at least get to try.
@DefinitelyNotDefinitiveGames
That’s a fun insider fact that we now know 🙂
@I.Lostalim

@@DefinitelyNotDefinitiveGames There's as many ways to determine what's "realistic" and how many shenanigans are allowable as there are DMs I'm sure he's not the only one that used it, but the phrase "you can certainly try" became super popular when Critical Role exploded back in 2015 as it is a very common Matthew Mercer response to a player question.

Wow! As a forever DM, that video really speaks to me. It can get pretty overwhelming sometimes, even for an experienced DM. Especially with larger groups. But, again, our guy Jocat came through some solid advice. Sometimes you just gotta step back, take a breather and, come back at the situation with a cool head. Which is a weirdly good advice for life in general. LoL :)

The Dingo Doodles that you noticed has a great dnd story for you guys about the fools gold campaign she played in. It was supposed to be a video about one funny thing that happened but the the world and story was so well done that she continued the series by popular demand. Its fun, intense and emotional and overall a grwat story with about 30 episodes so far. I think you would love it and become investet in it even if you dont know much about DnD, its easy to understand and I'd like as many people as possible to fall in love with it as well - so I hope you will take it into consideration even if it comes from someone who currently cant support on patreon but has been with you for about 2-3 years now, even if its just in private and not on the channel

I'm already all for suggesting Overly Sarcastic Production for its mythology reading and ranting, and its history reading and ranting videos, also the trope and cliche talks! It's a worthwhile watch if you're into Mythology, since Red is the mythology gal who reads a bunch of the folklore and myths while talking about some of the important stuff or minor stuff! This video is good because it also shows some bad things for players to do. Players pointing out obvious storytelling tropes, min-maxing their characters, disrespecting the DM, not keeping their character consistent, and more just serve to make a game less fun. So it’s up to both the players and the DM to make the game fun for everyone. Also let’s just appreciate how this guy managed to get MATT FREAKING MERCER to appear in this video!

I love the JoCat series and this is another banger. The only thing I never really liked about this vid is the end, he goes back to his players and apologizes for being mean and that's great and all, but I think it's important to remember how to be a good player. That kind of stuff is annoying and while sure, you should expect some if not all of it to happen that doesn't change the fact that these are adults who agreed to play this game with you and are now willfully making it difficult. It just would've been nice to see the players learn from their mistakes as well and apologize and roll with the story a little more, the DM is there to help the group have fun, but they're a person too ya know?

To be the Dungeon Master can be very intimidating, it's easy to forget that you are still preparing to play with your friends! So one thing to remember is that it's okay to ask for breaks as the Dungeon Master too when things go array and you really need some time to adjust. I used very rough bullet point like lists for my first attempt as my groups Dungeon Master. I prepared enough to be able to give everyone a direction and purpose while also leaving things open enough for me to be flexible. It's a tough balance to strike. I'm glad you two chose to react to this and I would definitely recommend to give D&D a try whenever you feel like it and get the chance.

This is pretty on point, and yes, DM is very stressful, and you can think of the D&D is a open world MMO or something, like think Skyrim, you don't need to follow the main quest, you rather do whatever or side quest. Sometimes, doing anything else is more fun. And we humans, sometimes love something we aren't suppose to do, like breaking stuff or stealing, etc. Yeah, DM have to track of everything, then i mean, everything. I wanted to try DM a session, some have asked but just thinking about all i have to do just stress me out and such.... Maybe one day, but i do recomend you two trying D&D sometimes. ^.^

So to explain the people involved here. takahata101, Gaijin Goombah, Connor McKinley, and Chris Zito are members of a dnd longplay series called Unexpectables, run by Takahata's Sister as the dungeon master I believe. Need to watch that show. Zee Bashew is a youtube animator famous for a dnd series called the Animated Spellbook where he explains how certain spells and spellcasting mechanics work in DnD through rough animations. Dingo Doodles and Felix Irnich both run the Dingo Doodles channel where Dingo does story time animations but primarily DnD stories. Her channel took off with her DnD story series called Fools Gold which had a campaign setting book Kickstarter that raised 2.7 million. Puffin Forest is also a DnD Story animator, using simpler images and telling stories of his experiences playing and running DnD games. Abserd is his most famous...infamous character. OSP Red and Blue are the narrators of the Overly Sarcastic Productions channel where they summarize history topics, classic literature, and mythology stories in an entertianing way, as well as discuss story tropes, both good and bad examples of said tropes. Davy Chappy and XP to Level 3 are DnDtubers where they talk about dnd stuff, give tips and tricks, and other stuff. XP to Level 3 is very interesting as he's unpredictable in the kind of videos you'll get from him, and Davy Chappy has recently dived into LARPing, or Live Action Roleplaying Tulok the Barbarian has made a name for himself creating character paths for if you wanna play a already existing fictional character, from anime characters to comicbook. His most recent video at the time of typing this was DC's Black Adam. Runesmith is another DnDtuber who summarizes concepts in DnD lore such as creatures, planar history, gods, settings, and more. He has also written several 3rd party books with the help of Ghostfire Gaming. Jess Jackdaw is a homebrew monster creator and really talented artist. They've also written a 3rd party DnD book called Heliana's Guide to Monster Hunting. Adan is another dndtuber with a simple artstyle and explains dnd concepts through short skits Kanekuo is another talented artist famous for two shows, Table Technician and Monsters Misguided. he has since left the youtube scene to write his own fantasy comic. Blain Simple is another dnd animator and has made a name for himself converting Anime concepts into DnD material. Cami cat is a talented singer, doing song covers and writing her own songs for stories and characters. Critcrab is among the most famous Reddit story readers. He basically signal boosts stories posted to Reddit, particularly r/RPGHorrorstories TheLoadingCrew is the creator of a series where he runs through a fictional character's deeds and determines their character alignment at the end of their series. and Matthew Mercer is the Dungeon Master of the biggest name in DnD Longplay series, Critical Role. Don't know who everyone else is sadly.

To fill in a couple of the gaps: Monty Glu is Taka's sister and DM of The Unexpectables. She is a streamer and has a campaign she's running that isn't related to The Unexpectables. Octopimp I believe is a voice actor? He was a guest character on The Unexpectables, playing Zenrio. (side note, Campaign 1 is a couple hundred episodes, and Campaign 2 is ongoing). Brachyzoid and Jocat are, to the best of my knowledge, friends who sometimes do Final Fantasy 14 content together. Caitlinc37 is an artist that Jocat has worked with a few times. Whystle (who goes by a different name now, i think its Shaddoodles?) is an artist who has made a few videos where she talks about some D&D/TTRPG experiences she's had while doing art. Yaroshien (along with Shaddoodles) were players in a short campaign Jocat ran, along with Cami Cat and Davvy.

Considering you're already privy to Critical Role through the animated series, you could always look up some of the table to screen videos, or just highlights from the stream. Keep in mind everyone has their style and that CR isn't the only way to play D&D, but it can give you an idea. Sometimes everyone cheers, sometimes the DM just rips the sheet he had prepared (it's ok Matt is really good at recycling those bits into something else at another time).

Being a DM is not so bad, if you have ruly players who wait their turn to speak and keep the min-maxers on a leash. What's important in the game is to have the players interact with the world you create together. Yes, together, because there's no possible way that everything's gonna go the way you planned it. Much of the final shape of the story is gonna be player made, and not DM made as you hoped it would. Writing everything down should go for a great novel, in the end.

In this example I feel like the blame was put on the DM here for ruining the game as if he rolled and failed a cool headedness check, but feels weird that nobody mentions how the players rolled a nat 1 on being considerate to the person who is shouldering all that pressure and went through all the trouble of making the game possible for everyone to enjoy. Accountability must come from both sides, as in, DMs should not be so restrictive and overprotective of their game but at the same time players should be considerate and exercise moderation with their shenanigans, after all if they want a game that caters to their fun only, they should DM their own game and be the overprotective DM of their story.

As a DM who has dealt with more than his share of jackass players, I actually have to disagree with Jocat's take. The DM is also a player who deserves to have fun and not have their work and effort go unappreciated. Also, constantly comparing what the DM had come up with to existing media is kinda disrespectful. Obviously, be flexible and accommodating as a DM, and be respectful of your players, too.

Being a DM can be a pretty stressful job sometimes but it is worth it when the players really get into the game and actually start feeling the emotions they should. Things do go off the rails sometimes and you just need to roll with it. Had a player find a plot hole I missed allowing them to skip the story for the entire session. How I write sessions has changed a lot since the first session. I used to write really detailed lists of everything I expected the players to do in order. Now I write all the important things that happen in different locations in town in no real order. Also if you are DMing and it is your first time never have more than 4 players if you can help it. Especially new players. For your first session with mostly new players I like to start in a locked city or on a boat or something. It limits wander and gives them a predictable space to warm up in. That isn't a hard rules or anything, starting them off in an open field is fine too, but that is my strategy.
