😂😂😂 I could imagine him being a kindergarten teacher talking about new crayon sets as if they are newly made ammunition or grenades whilst looking after the new recruits and getting them situated with their strict nap time schedules, also reminding them of the harsh potential scolding they will receive for even daring to colour outside of the lines. Hooorah!
I use to put 50 pounds in a book bag when I was a kid because I would watch dragon ball and saw that Roshi would make goku wear a weighted turtle shell at home
I love this lol. My mom had those weighted straps you put around your ankles and wrists for working out and I’d wear them all the time trying to train like Goku too.
I never had a gym or anything like that I could only workout at school. So I’d fill the laundry detergent bottles up with water when empty. Have those for my curls till failure then I’d find the heaviest crap my book bag could handle then got into form for squats till almost failure. Weighted lunges for a bit after that id end it off with about 30mins to an hour of cardio.
@@DeathMetal918 didn’t take it to school they were plated weights you put on a barbell it wasn’t sturdy either the book bag was sagging on my ass and I would do it when no one was home in my room and walk down the basement stairs never said it really worked out or seriously did it routinely just when I was watching the show that’s it
Did plenty in the Corps. Years later a chiropractor looked at my x rays and said, "You used to carry a lot of weight on your back, huh?" Hard pass Jocko.
There is an optimal weight for rucking that is actually good for your spine. The 100+ lbs you carried in the military is NOT optimal. For most grown men it's about 45-50 lbs. It's enough to suck and be good for you
It's more of a mental hardening than a physical one. In the military you sacrifice your health and youth to complete the mission. Civilians don't have to worry about rucking so it's unnecessary.
Yep. Move 20k with 90 pounds in radios and lasing equipment. Drop ruck and get ready to potentially settle into a patrol base just to hear a frago where you gotta move another 10k
if you train like this, you should also take special care to train on the bar. Hanging exercises to decompress the spine to balance the compression. yin yang
I use rucking to train for ultras and it complements my training. Preps my feet for the many km's of pounding and its soul crushing which is what happens while on the trail when everything hurts and I start feeling sorry for myself. I don't run to get faster. I do 2 ultras a year between 50-100 km and the purpose is to strengthen my mind. I loved the military because it taught me to never give up and in the moment life may suck, but there's always an end.
This video made me start rucking and it single handedly changed my overall fitness. I was overweight. I had strength as my primary training was powerlifting, but zero conditioning. I was too out of shape to run consistently, but consistent walking wasn’t intense enough. I needed something in between. I saw this video, strapped a heavy ass pack on, at moved at a steady pace for much longer than I could have run, and got an insane workout. My unweighted run times have improved and I still have muscle size and strength. Thank you for the inspiration.
For anyone who doesn’t ruck… the fact he has his weight that low is insane. In the military they teach you to put the heaviest items as high as possible, like up by your traps if possible. Companies like Goruck design their backpacks to have the weight high up to mimic this. Jocko is a beast having it down that low by choice
I find it more comfortable with the weights set lower. I have different sacks and vests but my favorite is homemade similar to jockos I find it less stressful on the traps.
One of my instructors always had two 45 pound plates in his pack in addition to his gear. When we were out training and doing 15-20 miles a day full gear he wasn’t even breathing hard… animal.
My son went in for Navy SF for 6 years. I’m praying for the well-being of all of you. It’s one of the hardest times for me, but he’s happy, and that’s all that matters to me.
idk, i havent heard or seen anything about or from him that i find even slightly impressive what so ever. He was in the army and did his job and he is an older guy keeping fit, millions od other people have done the same all over the world..Now i dont get impressed very often but when i do it's normally reg people risking their life to save other people or animals etc in a real life crisis because they dont HAVE to, they chose to....
I'm a retired Army guy. I am 49 and dug out my old OD green ruck, packed it and went out for ruck. I stay in shape but haven't rucked in years! It was like a long-lost friend and buddy it felt so good. Heaving it up over my head and strapping it on. I rucked in the morning down the sidewalks in town, rush hour traffic and school buses going by, I went for a full hour. A dump truck driver honked his horn at me in approval. I am going to make a regular routine. But the memories flowed through my mind and great feeling afterwards.
This is the difference between the Navy Seals and the British SAS. The SAS stopped using dead weight in the rucksack years ago as the weight needs to be useable so if there’s an emergency or problem you’re carrying the kit to deal with it. Also you learn how to deal with awkward shaped kit and how to pack it so you’re balanced and less likely to suffer injury. Even if you don’t want to mess around packing tents and sleeping bags carry water, food and a first aid kit as a minimum.
@@jake00942buying a big bottle of water is cheaper than weights and when you get tired you can dump the water and go home instead of being stranded with some heavy weights you cant lift anymore. Also you can drink the water.
I don't get this. He's using plates for training purposes. What u just described is just basic packing for the field that any combat organization would follow
Fast forward, I’m 46 with knees of an 80 year old. Orthopaedic surgeon has said stop running, or start crawling. My military background was build on massive tabbing elements “rucking” to you yanks. Knee surgery in a couple of weeks so hopefully some quality back. By the way, I ignored the surgeon and ran over helvellyn just because he said no 😂😂. Doubt I’ll take notice either, I’ll just slow down a bit
JACKO, “SALUTE” You epitomize what is RIGHT, GOOD, CORRECT about not only our military, but OUR COUNTRY. Thank You for the detailed explanations about your journey through life. I’m an old Vietnam guy, extremely proud of the path I took, the people I served with, my service to my country. Thank You Sir.
They were going to go bad on you by 40 even if you sat still and never moved, so I still think you made the right choice for what it’s worth. I think the people in their 40s who did nothing have way more infirmities than those who have had the most physically challenging careers and lifestyles, of the ones that I know. And no adventures to show for it either. You won’t have that issue anyway.
@@animula6908 really? heavily doubt 40yo hunter native tribe members have walking issues. i just completed a house move with a 45yo Liberian man who lifted everything by shifting the weight onto his glutes with bent knees. no knee issues at all.
Don't incrementally train up to that load either. And make sure your running on all downhills to test you connective tissues 🤣😂 I recommend this and all of your above comments to unconditioned new clients 🤡 😂
Today was my day off so instead of my 15 minute SIT/HIIT blast I decided to try rucking outside this time, I live in Canada, in a part where it drops below 10-15 degrees at midday so I was concerned about getting sick or something Ended up stumbling upon a track with one of those huge tractor tires that I've always wanted, so I spent like 30-40 minutes flipping it across the field Then I spent another 2 hours rucking around town, honestly was a lot of fun in comparison to the treadmill haha, definitely gonna do something similar to this one my days off and try to instead ruck in the mornings for a short time on my work days
Outdoorsman’s atlas trainer is what I use.. he looks like he has a simple external meat packing frame. Atlas trainer is basically a barbell on your back to put Olympic weights on.
Fuck ...OK this is why I love this guy... always gives me something new too push myself with....even though I wish I didn't see this...I welcome the opportunity for a new challenge
One time we saw a guy carrying a tree on his shoulder while we were hiking. We asked him what he was doing. He said training. We asked for what. He said: Life
Hurts my back to see that weight not higher up on the back, but then again it looks like that carrier is designed that way so what do I know. I was constantly pulling my straps to keep the load up high during ruck marches my younger days
I did this shit by accident in school, since middleschool id just carry all my books and stuff in my backpack and id weight like 100 pounds and because of that I have a insanely jacked back probably genetics as well. I just remember everyone would go "Woah wtf is in there bro its so heavy"
What is that ruck set up called? every ruck sack I've had has ripped into pieces when I stick weight in it. Or the straps and buckles give out or continue to loosen.
I'm 49 and I run with a 20 lb ruck and a 10 lb dumbbell in each hand. Never was military but some of the things they do for training and PT is very motivating! It does suck but afterwards it makes you feel awesome! Thank you for your service!
Jocko talking about rucking and read8ng Marcus Desuax writings about the legs of a soldier helped get me into ruck running. I'm 5'7" 150lbs. Still rucking with 35-45lbs 8-12 miles at 8-12min/per mile pace. Preparing for appilacian trail run. Goal is to get up to 40lbs pack traversing 30-50 miles per day alone. Or with dog. Self-supported, for 2 weeks.
I think I was the only crazy SOB that actually enjoyed rucking in my team. Especially in the early mornings in the mountains. To catch the sun rise on the way down the mountain was awesome.
