K-Ci made sure Dalvin wasn't left out by throwing in that " And Dalvin" part, because that's not actually supposed to be there. That's love right there. Superb accapella!
Dalvin is so underrated. He's like that third guy in Next or After 7 who truly completes the chords in their vocal harmonies. He never gets enough credit.
Dalvin solo album is so great and I listen to it pretty much everyday still, I agree with everything you said, he contribute so much to the group, he's also a great producer and song writer. Jodeci is the best group ever!!!!
Yeah Keith rarely got to shine. There is a video of them covering the Originals' Baby I Am For Real Keith sings a little part of the song. He has the same vocal type as the middle man in the original O Jays. Walter and Eddie are the lead vocals.
THEY CAN ALL SING. Devante is the real lower register that bass in the group. Dalvin feels in between Jojo & K-ci's vocals when they change keys, Of course Jojo is the high falsetto, I don't even need to say much about K-ci because you can just hear him anyway lol but if you have a real musical ear you can tell their harmonies blend in perfectly and balance each other out #JODECIForever
Sometimes it was 6 or 7. My brother was/is in PLAYA. They were signed to Davante'. They sang a LOT of the backgrounds on DOAMB and TSTATH albums. Missy as well. Read the credits. They tell you every single person who touched each song. My name is on the newest album from 2015. But yes, Dalvin lays most vocals down and harmonies and then they build from there. Dal sets the drum tempos and we all write. Everybody contributes in their own way. Devante' DEFinitely sings baritone on almost every song. But we turn it low in the final mix usually. So you have to listen close.@@ociphress
They were 2/4 of the dopest group of all time...they laid the foundation for the Jodeci sound. They did all the arrangements, etc. Honestly without those 2... there is no Jodeci
Jodeci was not just a group; they were a phenomenon. I agree that their descent into addiction is a tragedy. All we can do is pray for them. I hope that they put addiction behind them and get back in the studio. I miss them so badly!
Indeed a PHENOMENON, their songs get sampled like crazy in today's music because it's timeless. They could've released their songs today and been hits. My sons love their music.
its how many power houses in that group vs 2 power houses of course Jodeci still better in my opinion though because they wrote nd produced all their own music
whenever they make an unsung of jodeci this should be the opening clip for the episode lol. It's only right, just to show they were the best R&B group of all time and I'm standing by that statement that I just said.
KeithRNB2 True, but they're like a close 2nd in my opinion. The only thing that puts Jodeci in the top spot for me is that (and we've heard this a million times) they made it cool for the brothers on the block that swear up & down they were too rough for R&B to sing love songs. When Jodeci came out they wore typically street clothes (baggy jeans, boots, and a cap on backwards), they looked like 4 dudes on the corner. Boyz II Men were more mature and refined in both appearance and their music. So in a way, Jodeci always appealed to me because they were like the average guys, I could relate to them (cause I really don't like wearing suits either lol).
+Matthew Olden Lol I see what you mean in that perspective. They were a major influence on many people/artists. They were the first "street R&B group," I agree. It's sad how artists let the industry and negative influeuces (like drugs, bad contracts, etc), blow their career to the ground. I did a few R&B covers here on RU-vid (such as Donell Jones' "Where I Wanna Be," and Boyz II Men's "Please Don't Go," and some others). You can check them out. I hope I can help bring some of that true and soulful R&B, back for good.
The DeGrates got slept on..they blended in PERFECT and balanced out K&J on the low end..Shaq & Kobe(Haileys)can do damage but the supporting cast(DeGrates)are just as important!!
Shit they wrote and produced majority of the music Jodeci was truly a band K-C and JoJo where the lead vocalist Dalvin play drums Devante was always on the piano he do majority of the composing writing Dalvin did a lot of co writing Devante and Dalvin did a lot of producing
I can hear all of them. If y'all have notice DeVante is the deep Voice so anyone low that's him. Dalvin is a bit deeper than Jo Jo, also JoJo can hit them high notes. Of Course K-Ci he has the more powerful, soulful voice out of all of them. I pay attention to things like that.
Actually in the early years kci was singing alot of the top notes at the time they where big guy fans aaron hall song the top notes in guys that way you hear the voice of the group kci was the main voice at that time jojo is actually singing under kci this version of forever my lady jojo carrying the melody note thats real noticeable on the record of forever my lady the top note kci singing is not on the record they did it to let kci riff kci also song the top note on father mcs treatem. Dalvin is singing under jojo he usually carries the color tone note half step lower then jojo half step higher then devonte and of course davonte is the bass
@@sweeetzz its so hard not to though lol that lil KC-i man I just can't with that voice... But because of all the speculation I made a real effort to you can defo hear them, you just can't get a harmonious melody in acapella especially this version, like that without the inbetween layering they provide...
People say Devante and Dalvin can't sing but with my own 2 eyes their voices blend in with perfect with Kci&jojo their voices might not be as strong and sweet bring they bring their voices with the background vocals which you can clearly hear on the records and live.
This is why I love the Internet.. Namely RU-vid... I love how all these comments are people talking about the importance of devante and dalvin in the jodeci harmony. Much love fellow music heads/90s RnB heads. 100
I am so in love with Jodeci! Devante is my favorite. He possessed so much talent. Singing, producing and don't even get me started about him and those piano skills. I've been doing a lot of research on the group lately, it hurts me to see how drugs and alcohol have played a large role in the lives of the members. I'm glad we have memories like this video. I miss these guys, and I pray that the all get the proper help they need for their own health.
I love K-Ci's voice but I don't know that I agree with you. DeVante was the driving force behind JoDeCi. JoJo and K-Ci had the stellar voices, but DeVante and Dalvin brought songwriting, production and musicianship to the group.
The show the after party hotel cd showcased dalvin and devante singing lead dalvin on fun 2 night and devante on the p.i.b interlude and devante inhermission that was the best album of them all because it had ballads uptempo songs and bedroom songs bring on the funk get on up pump it back love you 4 life can we flo let's do it all let's do it all time and place and good love very underrated album.
yep... they also only sang on two whole cords... KCi and JoJo on the whole cords and Dalvin and Devante on the half cords. That's why the harmony is so tight and have that twang in it. lol
Some musical groups can only sing in 4 octaves, whereas JODECI sang in 6 octaves. Heavenly angels!#1Jodecifan #Ilove90sRnB #Generationx #Mygeneration ❤💯
I was a teenager in the 90s, 1992 Forever My Lady tour was my first ever concert, and let me tell you. The 90s were sooooo LIVE! Those were days, we had the most amazing soundtrack for all of the 'firsts' in our lives, for our formative years. Glad I experienced it.
Pure perfection… so amazing that it's scary. Nobody couldn't touch Jodeci at this point. Boyz II Men had the commercial success and New Edition pushing them, but Jodeci was pure grit, trendsetters, iconic before their time. Jodeci single handedly changed the pace of R&B music from their debut. So I would say 💭 New Edition/Jodeci hold the crowns👑
Aniel Sardjoe "No Silkk?" Are you serious? This is my top five of all time! Don't get me wrong, Silkk is cool and all, but do you really think that they are really better than my top 5?! I had a similar discussion with someone that thought All 4 One should be in the top 5...smh... Anyway, who's in your top 5??
Dalvin gets overlooked but his vocals are the real key to the Jodeci vocal sound. Devante too to a certain extent, but D really isn't a singer. Dalvin has that tone that is missing when you hear Kc-i and Jojo's stuff and wish you were listening to Jodeci instead. Of course Kc-i and Jojo are the vocal powerhouses, but Dalvin gives it that extra je ne said quoi
John Pitts Go to about the 1:00 mark here: /watch?v=rKViKiPzVeU K-Ci, Dalvin, and JoJo sing the chorus for "Freek 'n' You" before performing "How Do U Want It" with Pac.
This is on point. If you watch the video when they did love you for life at the Apollo, you can hear how dalvin ties the harmony together. He was singing the bottom note, kci was in the middle and jojo was on top.
0:13 Damn, Jojo's mid vocals really bringing that whole harmony together. Such a beautiful touch, he was just as good of a singer as K-Ci, just didn't have as much of a powerful voice as K-Ci did which is why I assume he fronted the group.
Devante wrote almost all their songs and produced all the beats he did basically everything he was the one who put the group together in the first place.
@Cameron Smith: He couldn't have done everything..lol if he wasn't the primary singer or should I say SANGER lol KC and JOJO did there thang with them locals. They all had their own individual talents. 😁
dalvin was sooooo cute with the brown hair..jodeci is the BEST R&B GROUP OF ALL TIME (kanye shrug) i got goose bumps everytime i watch this.how i wish they were together
The amount of love I have for these guys is immeasurable and DeVante has a special place in my heart. I pray I meet them all someday...SOON. I'm a hard one to impressed and I was just that and then some,.I was blown away. Can't nan none fuck with jodeci.
When u think of luvvv..U THINK OF JODECIIIII!! Ihonestly believe we'll ever hear a more unique sound like this again..especially the way the industry is setup today in which TRUE talent is no longer required to make it!
They messed up when they split up. Devante' was a master producer and vocal arranger. Their harmony sound just like a piano chord. I am sure Devante' banged their parts out on the piano and you can tell by the harmony. Dude could have been the next Teddy Riley
no words will be able to express the feeling i get while listening to this. And devante was just pure sexiness. if i had a time machine i throw him in it and marry him

I remember beong 15 years old watching this episode of video soul I recorded this acapella performance on my V CR. I was absolutely astonished and so fascinated with how amazing they sounded then. that was over 20 years ago and there has not been one R@B group that has come out Since that can come close other than boys to me. This is an amazing archive. I loved growing up in the 90's the culture ,the music, was soooooo much better than it is now.
@suledrake suledrake Oh yeah, my singing group wanted be just like Jodeci. We were from NC and were huge fans. We like Boys II Men, Hi-5, Silk, etc. There was just something different about Jodeci. We thought it had to be computers... no one's harmony is that tight. We used a machine to seperate the tracks and were able to figure out there secret. The two whole notes and two half notes make an unusually tight blend. If u throw end the gospel feel with a street edge and that is amazing.
