Oldster here...I don't know if anyone under 50 understands just how HUGE this album was back then. Yes; Soul II Soul was WAY ahead of their time. I know there is still great music around of course...but...they didn't have to attract with a gimmick or shock; they were simply talented.
You know it... so sad no middle age mature singers, groups, & bands 2023 & many years b4 that...wth, happened... like these ppl weren't profitable. But more than that, they do have a very active listening, buying & concert audience... thx for recordings...

The whole piece is a masterful. The crescendo at 2:16 delivers big. I remember when this came out in '89. I used to rewind this for this song so much, the tape wore out.
I can listen to this accapella 10,000 times, the harmony, the highs, the lows, and crisp voices, deliberate vocals with a blend that hasn't been duplicated,....and won't ever be...spectacular!!!!#

The scene in BELLY comes to mind everytime I hear this version. It made the scene so much more engaging and her voice came thru so powerful. Whoever thought to put the song with that scene was genius.
It was Hype Williams. And with all due respect Fuck Belly. I was definitely a SIIS fan but by the time the movie came out we were all tired of this song already. It played in clubs All The Time. That scene was a cheap and obvious gimmick. I still love this song and come back to it because it's a classic

I completely agree. Jazzie B tried to replicate this but he could not. I bought the second album and no track came even close to the brilliance and innovation of this one. Still bumps 30 years later.

In the 80's my uncle had one of the best car systems around, you could hear it coming from 8 blocks away. We would drive around pumping this song. This was a hot joint back then and still is today.
My mother threw me a surprise 17th birthday party (February 23, 1990), and all of my friends came. They all kept the secret well, and my surprise was genuine. One of my friends gave me this CD as a gift, since it's all I listened to anyway.

Let me share my memory of when i first heard this like everyone else.Springtime i think it was 1992.At the SoundFactory here in NYC on a saturday night.We had been partying into the wee hours.It was 3 or 4 in the morning.Junior Vasquez played this acapella version.We were standing in the middle of the dance floor wondering what this sound was.THEN THE BEAT DROPPED! The rest is history.The song still bumps after 20 years.
