Content warning: suic*dality
Brian Tibbets describes his faith journey from devoted Mormon missionary to suic*dal doubter to healed ex-Mormon. He opens up about the shame and lies he felt compelled to tell while hiding his loss of faith, his wife's manipulation by unethical therapist Jodi Hildebrandt, and the supernatural beliefs that tore his marriage and family apart. Brian shares intimate details about his experiences with Mormon rules around sexuality and how he tested whether sinning really caused loss of the Spirit. Ultimately, Brian found peace and healing after leaving the LDS church, regaining relationships with his kids, and finding a healthier marriage outside Mormonism. His story serves as a cautionary tale about the harm fundamentalist Mormon beliefs can cause.

I think more likely is she was bitter she couldn't marry another woman. Everything that's been described about her, from her niece's recounting of her words to the pattern of isolating the wives from their husbands, seems like a bitter jealous repressed woman. 100% this, I was born and raised in the church, and was led to believe that bishops were personal representatives of the Lord. I was in an abusive relationship, And went and saw my bishop for council, my intention was to find him my boyfriend at the time, a new place to live, regardless he said, because we were having sex outside of marriage there was contention in the relationship. If we got married, the contention and blessings would be poured out upon us. We were married and sealed in the temple a year later. Needless to say the abuse lasted for 17 years before I was able to get out. I am so sorry to be one of those that believed in the church hook line and sinker. Thanks for listening to my rant lol.

The grand parents snuck around that. As a parent I would be upset. But I wouldn't have blamed the kids. Wow phone!!! Thanks Grandpa!!! The GPs should have talked to the parents tell them they would like to talk to the grand kids more often. Can we give them phones?? We can put parental controls or phone calls only. We can schedule times to talk?? There were many ways without sneaking around. Needless to say Jodi's resolution was extremely harsh and borderline sadistic. I love Brian’s honesty, being out of the church for 15yrs now I still find it a difficult subject to speak on. Undoing the churches brainwashing is such a mind curling experience. The bguilt, the anger at the manipulation. I was naive, we are taught to believe without question and learning you’re surrounded by liars is such a hard lesson to learn. My little family is Just another family destroyed in the name of the church. My first husband was Mormon and I could never measure up to his ideal of a perfect Mormon wife. That life was so unbelievably suffocating, trying to be what my ex husband wanted me to be and never quite getting it right. My husband now is amazing, he’s not religious. He loves me for me with no judgement , and that’s the greatest gift he could ever give me. Life is so much better after leaving, I don’t live a life of internal chaos. My younger sister is only a year out and she has so much anger towards the church now, yet she’s never felt the inner peace she does now.

May I suggest the peace that passes understanding In the fact that the Mormon church is a cult. Jesus Christ is completely distorted in that “ religion”. If you read the Holy Bible only, and ask God for truth, you will find a life free of guilt when you ask Jesus to forgive your sins ( because every single solitary person sins all the time! ) and ask Him to guide you and to enter into your heart and life. For it is by grace ( not Mormon version of grace) we are saved thru faith not by works ( following man’s rules or working our way to heaven) but it is the free gift of God, lest any man should boast. I feel so very sorry for people who live under the guilt and lies of the Mormon church.

Because Jodi had a degree in psychology and she was dealing with vulnerable people who were already used to being manipulated by the church already. She convinced the couples that the husbands had a non-existent addiction. Then, Jodi's methods would magically cure the addiction that didn't actually exist... OR she'd convince the wives to divorce and make them think they were so much better off separated/divorce. The cured addicts and the single mothers told the church leaders how much Jodi had helped them. And, of course, Jodi never missed an opportunity to praise herself.

Good on you for what you wrote! I‘m a man, and have encountered a number of misandrists - which was at times truly disturbing. Also because then, this „wasn’t a thing“. No one would question- let alone CONDEMN a female for engaging in misandry. Here one of the lesser terrible experiences I made: I was once in an odd controversial discussion with this girl at a party. I did listen to her, did not agree with what she said and offered an alternative take while sticking with the facts - meaning that as far as I was concerned, not only wasn’t I being personal - I actually offered her solid information in hopes she may change her take on things. But no matter how rational I was debating, she kept being oddly antagonistic. By the way - the topic didn’t even have anything to do with women or men. But I tried to understand where her antagonism was coming from - and the thought crept up on me that she was being antagonistic with ME - just because I WAS A MAN! So I completely went off-topic and bluntly asked her: „Do you hate all men?“ To which she (and I give her credit for that!) simply replied: „Yes.“ It’s hard to understand for others, I guess - but to me, this was a kind of touching situation - because (at least that’s how I view it) it gave her the chance to reflect on her situation - and her motivations. I think she probably has a backstory that may explain how she became a misandrist. Doesn’t make it right. But I still viewed her as a human being. However - everyone else at the party, who had witnessed our exchange was just SHOCKED - mainly at me, for being so blunt lol. Another misandrist, by the way is that psychologist from the Amber Heard v Jonny Depp trial. I forgot her name - but she was INSUFFERABLE!

I really empathized with this story a lot. I grew up in the far north of Utah, and my family is from southern Idaho (declo, burly, blackfoot, etc). I grew up around Benson Mormons. I also had a bad experience with my mission leader abusively shaming me. I also had the "what if this is all bullshit" moment. I also thought it was necessary to hide that revelation. I went on my mission and all through BYU while keeping my feelings a secret. I can see why you would feel like you had no way out of that situation. I feel this Mormon story more than a lot of them.

I was born in Italy and didn’t know anything about the Mormons until… oh, well into adulthood. And you know, the Catholic faith (which I left behind long ago) has its share of wild tales, but when I learned the Joseph Smith story I did a double take. Gold plates? Disappearing gold plates nobody saw? Read through a HAT with a STONE in it? And this happened WHEN? You know, sometimes you suspect that the prophets and saints and originators of your religion might have been not totally honest, or mad, or at least suffering from frontal lobe epilepsy - but good Heavens, Joseph Smith was something else.

Joseph Smith is the prophet of the restitution of all things, spoken of by all the holy prophets, but tares were planted and the Mason's killed Joseph, Hyrum, Don Carlos and Sam Smith and then took his marvelous work and a wonder to get members to come to them. The stones are called the urim and Thummim and they are a physical means of being able to translate ancient records.
@Wh3nth3wick3drul3
@Wh3nth3wick3drul3 Месяц назад
Also pertaining to the gold plates, Dr. Sammi Hannah was my dad's client and he was asked to translate them from English into Egyptian. The Book of Mormon is an authentic record of the time when the Hebrew's, the Egyptian's, the Greeks had an alliance and used reformed Egyptian. Sammi Hannah said that the Book of Mormon is Egyptian and it makes for horrible English. Because Joseph Smith translated the Egyptian word for word into English using the urim and Thummim. But to see the words light up, he had to use a hat for a dark background. Those weren't just stones. Read the Bible about what the urim and Thummim was.

Also when I was on a Mormon mission this lady accused a member of the wife of the family we were living with of stealing her wedding ring. This lady accused her after praying about it. My jaw dropped when you said your band's name. Outside the Lines was my favorite album in high school but i must have blocked out that time of my life because i totally forgot Colors ever existed. I paused this 10 min in to go listen to the album and comment. I especially can't wait to hear the rest of this episode now!

Parental alienation is such scary phrase in America. We see cases like this, but we also see abusers crying alienation and getting forced access to their kids..... there's got to be a better way to check and keep kids with or away from parents appropriately

The opening part where he talks to bishops and friends about masturbation is such a telling story. Something so normal, and even healthy is considered so taboo they won't even define it. It struck me when John talks about healthy therapy, the therapist is there to help with the client's goals. The therapist whom I had on my mission was there only to reinforce the goals of the church and the mission president. What my goals were or what was actually best for me was not to be considered at all. Of course at the time I didn't realize it, but looking back, I realize it now.

It’s insane how so many men have similar stories about Jodi. It’s like an organization system she had. Make the wives separate from their husbands, control and abuse the children, and use their flaws or most vulnerable thing they confide in her against the person. It’s very odd that it’s always the wife that she sides with. It makes me wonder if she had little control in her previous marriage so she wants to have some control over others.
@mistytowns

One of the most powerful manipulative doctrines of the church, which people like Jodi can take advantage of, is the whole concept of the eternal family and eternal marriage. It creates such a deep fear that we will lose the persons we love the most for all eternity. And also our place in the highest level of that eternity. You will basically be lonely and miserable forever. What a horror story this episode. Kudos to Brian for vulnerably speaking so open about it!

I had it happen to me too. I can confirm that repressing my sexuality was very dangerous for my mental health. I leads to depression because you can never figure out what is wrong with you or why you are obsessed with some female. Your head spins round and round and you feel like you are losing your mind because you don't understand why your body shuts down when your amazing boyfriend even comes close to you. I never occured to me that sexual feelings come naturally and that you don't have to force yourself. I would get euphoric and so excited when a beautiful walked into the room but I thought everyone felt that way. If I did not get help I would have ended up in the psych ward, and I am not joking...Being gay when the whole of society seems to tell you that your sexuality does not really exist is crazy making at its finest. Your brain just can't seem to reconcile what you are experiencing and you are put in a state of constant cognitive dissoance, it was hell and I was exhausted. Things are much better now but I grew up in a time were I never even saw lesbians together.

This is beyond diabolical. The destruction of families and the children. For what??? Money and control? To what end? I'm sitting here wondering how many more are doing this that the light has not yet uncovered? What if that poor little angel had not been able to escape. The fact that they both plead guilty will prevent us knowing the whole truth of this wickedness. I guess for that, I'm somewhat grateful. Despicable

Thanks for coming on and sharing your story, Brian. I was lucky enough to see Adam's episode before it had to be taken down, and there is an obvious pattern here in what Jodi was doing to families. She really wants to paint these men as predators. When Brian said that his ex-wife said he r*ped his children, I was just like gobsmacked. What an outrageous and horrible thing to falsely accuse someone of doing. I think this is made especially worse when it's being made in a culture where there is a lot of real child abuse that the Church is systematically covering up. It was interesting to me that they found Jodi in a faith crisis. I'm a never-Mormon and I didn't really think about situations where one spouse loses their faith and the other does not. I guess because in moderate religious circles, like how I grew up, it would not be a big deal. Brian, I think it's really commendable that you recognize and take responsibility here for the ways that you harmed your kids. A lot of parents refuse to do that and it's really damaging. I appreciate that you didn't try to make an excuse for your part in everything.

In every school, in every country on earth it should be mandatory to teach critical thinking skills. They should start in kindergarten and and when they hit high school they should double down and they should spend a couple hours a week honing these skills. People wouldn’t be so inclined to sleep walk into these high control groups and religions and hand over their money and their time.
