Crazy to think that if SOLT had gone with first choice casting, it would have been Gene Hackman and Michelle Pfeiffer. Which I guess *could* have worked, yet Starling and Lecter are probably THE most iconic roles in the careers of Foster and Hopkins.

menifestation7 "she did nothing"? did you just not watch the video? In that kind of business, she has to take those opportunities. You don't expect someone to just sit around and wait for calls, you go out there and show them you deserve those roles if you know you'd be perfect for them. "Smacking people in the head" could be her metaphor for being persistent, and that wasn't given to all her roles.

Because there are hundreds of actors that think they are or just are suitable for roles and either the director or the studio have someone else in mind or they really aren’t suitable. Clooney’s Batman is a case of him being the obvious choice for everyone and failing miserably. Films are all about vision. The writers vision, the director’s vision, the actor’s vision, the studio’s financial vision. Sometimes they align, sometimes they don’t. An actor is only as good as his last job. Not even quality wise but style wise. Keanu Reeves doing Shakespeare speaks to that mismatch. So there really isn’t anything inherently wrong with her having to fight for her roles. Especially, if it’s roles she believes in. It actually adds to her performance.

I have enjoyed all of the Jodie Foster movies that I have seen, but I am very pleased to hear her say her favorite performance is Nell. I found her character and the whole movie mesmerizing, heart-wrenching, sad and happy all at the same time. Moved me when I first saw it, moves me now, even just thinking about it. I believe there are probably many actresses that could have played the role, but none would have given Nell the ethereal nuances that Jodie did.
