Silence of the lambs is one of only three films in history who have won all the five big Oscars, best male and female, best director, best script and best film. The others are One flew over the cuckoo's nest and It happened one night.
Honestly, In my honest opinion, it was only a masterpiece the first time seeing it. The 2nd and 3rd time i saw it, it was tame, predictable and completely lost its shock value.
Lt. Col. Frank Slade Blasphemy! Just kidding :). I disagree though. I've watched it at least a dozen times and it never gets old. I think I'm more interested in the overall look, atmosphere and feel of the film. It's very dark and unsettling.
Lt. Col. Frank Slade The cinematography and darkness of the film itself, not the plot. How do you not think buffalo bills basement isn't dark and unsettling? It's creepy as hell.
Jodie Foster is a genius. A straight-A student and valedictorian of her 30-member class at L.A.’s rigorous Lycée Français, Jodie applied to Yale, Harvard, Princeton, Columbia, Berkeley and Stanford. Eventually she found out she had scored a collegiate grand slam. Astonishingly, she was accepted by all of those schools. she's simply the best
@@charliedameliodunkinfanpag6462 Not all women get pregnant! Maybe she didn't want to be pregnant, maybe she wasn't fertile. Gay couple can take each other's surnames, and if she was male (which she isn't; there is footage of young Jodie being a girl, to young to have been on estrogen), that wouldn't make her a man, nor would it make her any less a woman.
Why would you ever need to imply your sexuality? She's never been an outsider struggling for acceptance & validation. She's been in the biz most of her life. This was the 90's not the 50's. By this time conservatives had more to fear from black listing then homosexuals & still do. Stop making drama where it didn't exist anymore.
@@falconeshield Delusional? She's been in the biz her whole life & people in power knew she was gay long before this. Just stop with the fake oppression.
Jodie is an actress who is exceptionally articulate and natural. She's smarter than the norm, speaking with both intelligence and grace. She attended a French-language prep school, the Lycée français in Los Angeles (and consequently speaks French fluently). She also was awarded a Doctor of Fine Arts from Yale.
Noe Berengena I like her but she doesn't sound that intelligent just normal. She went to a French-Language prep school. Well that would sound really smart for those who aren´t French that is.
She is a prodigious human and not only french she also speaks Italian, Spanish and German fluently, she scored in 600s in her SATs and was accepted at all Ivy League Universities as well as Stanford and graduated Yale with magna cum laude, she also started to talk at 9 months and taught herself to read at 3 years and graduated high school as a valedictorian, she's otherworldly
Perhaps the greatest irony of The Silence of the Lambs is that some people believe that this movie about the marginalization of women was stolen by a man. And sure enough, Anthony Hopkins gave an iconic performance as Hannibal “The Cannibal” Lecter, a slithering serial killer whose good manners give way to despicable violence. But this rich and filling motion picture - one of my very favorites - is not his movie. It is Jodie Foster’s. It is Foster we see running the FBI training course at the beginning of the film, proving herself worthy from the opening frames and then spending the rest of the film showing her work. Every eye is upon her, lascivious or pitying, condescending or predatory. It says a lot about the world of The Silence of the Lambs that the only man in the movie who doesn’t view her as “less than” for her sex is a homicidal maniac. (And that is, if you think about it, the only reason we truly like Lecter at all. Only he and the audience can recognize Clarice Starling’s finer qualities.) Jodie Foster plays her role in The Silence of the Lambs like a master chess player, always on the defense and always on the attack. She knows when to make sacrifices and she knows when to stand up for herself. She grows in confidence over the course of the movie, as one mentor fails her and another, more unlikely mentor gives her the strength she needs to carry on. And she does it all while fighting back a hint of an accent. Clarice Starling is a real person, and she is also an act, and she is acted by one of the greatest of all actresses, operating at the peak of her abilities, giving a performance for he ages.
My opinion: Every actress should have received the Oscar that year. It was one of the best line-ups I can recall. But so happy Jodie won. She was marvelous as the dedicated and fearless FBI agent.
I believe Jodie Foster was offered the role of Thelma, but turned it down to play Clarice. The writer of Thelma and Louise had Jodie Foster in mind for Thelma and Cher as Louise.
One of my favourite actresses. She was incredibly talented as a child and she grew up well adjusted, no drugs or alcohol problems that derailed so many other child stars' careers. And I'll always bless her for turning down the piece of shit that was Hannibal. One more Oscar and she's up there with Meryl!
I thought it was dreadful. A lack of suspense, and it totally demystified Lecter. And don't get me started on the 'brain eating' scene... Did you like it?
HackneyShark I've never seen it, but I agree that Lecter has lost his mystique since HANNIBAL, HANNIBAL UPRISING (which recounted his woeful childhood/youth), and the recent HANNIBAL TV series. I hate the trend of trying to justify or redeem villains, e.g. Wicked Witch of the West in WICKED, Maleficent, Michael Meyers in HALLOWEEN remake, etc.
+HackneyShark I totally agree with you. She didn't want to work in Hannibal because she felt that she would be betraying Clarice by doing this piece of trash and playing such a different character. I also admire her even more for that. And I agree with everything you said, she's definetely one of the greatest.
I will forever love Jodie Foster because of this role. This was the role that turned me into a fan of hers for life. I will watch anything with Jodie in it.
When they played the opening song of The Silence in the Lambs, I had goosebumps. This movie gave the viewers chills and excitement at the same time. Chills because of the superb role of Anthony Hopkins as Dr. Hannibal Lecter. I could watch this movie all over and over again...🖤
Actually, I saw some Videos tht the Actor who played the Real Serial Kidnapper and Killer that Claric is tracking down- I think his first name was Ted was really great in the MOvie and greatly underrated. He later did a supporting Role on the TV Series- Monk
We watch this movie a few times a year. It's definitely a favorite. I remember when it was first released. We were living in northern MN and my husband went to WI to attend a work conference. While there, he and a co-worker went to see "Silence of the Lambs". The minute he got home, he told me about the movie. He was so exhilarated after seeing it.
Jodie Foster is an unequivocal definition of a young achiever, first Oscar nomination at 14, two Oscars by 29, first directorial venture at 25 and feature film debut at 28, she's simply stunning
I sincerely believe that without either Jodie Foster or Anthony Hopkins the movie wouldn't have won so many awards. Truly a masterpiece with legendary casting.
I guess that's why no one talks about the sequel Hannibal while Silence of the Lambs has been cemented in film history as one of the greatest of all time.
Everyone knows Jodie was a gifted child and is smart and highly intelligent and that always reflected on her choice of roles. Even as a young actor from her teens she did films like Taxi Driver, Little Girl Who Lives Down The Lane and then as a young adult when actresses of her age like Demi Moore or Meg Ryan were doing fine but somehow stupid romantic comedies, she was doing The Accused, The Silence Of The Lambs, Nell and then she was directing as well which was seldom those days to see a young female + actor to helm a film as a director, she's a complete genius and a role model everyone should have, her extraordinary career is something to behold and her cerebral qualities are to be worshiped, I hope she gives acting more time now like she gives to directing.
Agreed.. but Meg Ryan is very underrated by the way, and held still in the "cuteness" stereotype which hadn't opened for her any chances to show how great she is at acting. She also made a wonderful performance in When a man loves a woman as an alcoholic.
Clarice Starling (as portrayed by foster) is one of the greatest film performances of all time, what a masterpiece and what a role for a woman 👍👍 Jodie rules
She looks so petite and fragile and girly with her gorgeous pink clothing and then she talks and you get that lovely deep voice with the special accent that no one expects to hear from her. So elegant, classy and talented! Also love that she's wearing gloves.
I have always respected Jodie Foster for not bowing down to media and public pressure and talking about her private life in interviews in which she is only required by contract to sell the film she’s currently staring in.
I agree but she's pretty & strong. was just looking up what she was in everything from television to movies. so much. I like Nell & Silence of the Lambs im not sure but they may have thought she very young ok lets make her just out of the academy might have been a role for a woman 5 or 10 years older. very innocent and evil is the silence of the lambs.
winning 2 academy awards allows someone the right to pick and choose different roles-Contact, Anna and the King, Nell, Panic Room, Inside Man and The Brave One are pretty solid performances, you could say the same thing about Hiilary Swank
Jodie foster is a wonderfull actrees and unforgettable she got a enormous character is beautiful person she was strong woman when revealed was gay im still think she is amazing and she knows god bless jodie!
IMO one of the best performances of all time! I think this was a role that was almost destined to be upstaged by Anthony Hopkins. Foster completely held her own, if not surpassed Anthony, the subtlety of her performance is extraordinary!
+sonicdeatmonkey Yes. Incredible performances which lead to them becoming icons in their own right, some characters can be replaced but not the ones played by hopkins and jodie foster for sure.
" Not just for his talent but his goodness, I promise you". Beautiful respect and love to the late great Johnathan Demme. I love this speech so much and the film even more.
This is unequivocally the smartest and most confident speech I have heard at any award show, no awkward pauses, no paper, no unwanted political statements (like they do now), Jodie is a remarkable woman and a perfect human : smart, beautiful and great in her job
Lol! She's wearing a red ribbon in support of fighting AIDS after the US government swept the epidemic under the rug. She then thanked everyone for embracing a feminist heroine. 😂
She's that only person who defies the fact that child actors don't turn out to be successful adult actors 👍👍👍👍 and she's so beautiful and elegant, her physical transformation form teenage to adulthood is 👍
So, they stood for Anthony Hopkins winning Best Actor for a less substantial role in terms of screen time, but didn't for Jodie. Yet Hollywood remains confused about so many things ...............
Jodie impresses me most because of her kindness and not talking down to those who are of average intelligence. To me that is true genious and I will always love her for this.
I love that how excited/nervous she was and yet so eloquent and genuine. I love every word with which she chose to express herself! I loved her face, too-- boy is she ever beautiful! AS IF she wouldn't have won for Silence of The Lambs. Though it is too bad for Thelma and Louise.
jitkasuarez trivia, the writer of Thelma and Louise wrote thelma with Jodie Foster in mind but Ridley Scott found her too young to play the part so she was passed over
Unfortunately it was up against Silence of the Lambs which is an absolutely brilliant movie. I was absolutely glued to the screen from the opening frame. One of the real Champs!
If they relased a year later or before than they might had a chance bcoz no could stand stiff in front of the brilliance of Jodie Foster's Clarice Starling
Any sane person who isn't aware about the fact that Miss Foster's a genius, could very easily say that she's a gifted human solely based on her iconic performance as Clarice Starling, her fierce intellect imbues throughout
Jodie Foster is a genius of a woman. 😘 She's amazing as an actor, has a great vocabulary, is beautiful and she's gay ! Seriously why is it that the most intelligent individuals are gay ?! Maybe being gay is a wiser choice. XD
Jodie Foster truly deserved this win. Geena Davis and Susan Surandon were amazing in "Thelma and Louise", but Jodie Foster gave the most incredible performance by an actress that year.
Jodie Foster was brilliant in this role! I heard that director, Jonathan Demme, was initially interested in Michelle Pfeiffer for the role, but Jodie ended up getting it. I love Michelle Pfeiffer but Jodie Foster was born to play this role. I would've loved seeing Susan Sarandon winning here a few years earlier than she did (because I love her, too... and especially in Thelma and Louise), but there's no disputing Jodie's win as being deserving.
Jodie seems to like these macabre films like CONTACT, SILENCE of the .. ETC and i think michele PF. would somehow take away from the seriousness of the film. I think she can turn any piece of crap into something noteworthy just by being there.
Love Animals weirdly, Jodie Foster and Michelle Pfeiffer were the first choices to play Thelma and Louise, with screenwriter having written the role of Thelma with Jodie in mind but Ridley Scott found her a bit younger for the part
@@peshmadscientist1833 You should rent "The Brave One", Jodie was even BETTER than Silence. But the movie tanked at the box office, so her performance went unnoticed.
One of the few films the Oscars actually got right. Both actors deserved Oscars both got one. Today the Oscars largely are not about performance but name recognition.
So Im french and lived in New Zealand for 30 yrs and returned to France 3 yrs ago to live. I struggle to Watch English speaking movies on french TV because they're all dubbed and it sucks but I was once at my sisters and we were watching a movie with Jodie Foster and I was blown away with the voice of the "dubber" as it was just like Jodie's… Turns out she's fluent in french and dubs all her movies in french
Let’s be honest, Jodie didn’t deserve this Oscar... she VERY WELL deserved it for The Accused, but not for Silence of the Lambs... Anthony Hopkins deserved it, for sure...
I think John Hinkley was the only one. There is also a conspiracy theory about, that none other than George Bush was the true mastermind behind that assassination attempt. If that is the case, then Johnny boy was merely a patsy. Just my 2 cents.
The more I think about it the more Foster really deserved this Oscar. It takes a strong performance to be able to hold the screen with somebody who knocked it out of the park like Anthony Hopkins did.
