Paul Newman and Elizabeth Taylor presenting producers Edward Saxon, Kenneth Utt and Ron Bozman with the Oscar® for Best Picture for "The Silence of the Lambs" at the 64th Academy Awards® in 1992.
Not a thriller. It's a horror movie straight up..all the uptight members of the Oscars just called it a thriller to save face from giving a horror movie the best picture. A cannibal who eats people and chasing down a man who skins women in order to make a suit and become a woman...You know who else did both those things? Leatherface
The Silence of the Lambs is such an incredible movie. Every single Oscar that movie won was deserved. Phenomenal acting and phenomenal direction by Demme.
Because the performances were soooooooo strong 💪 Johnothan Demmes direction somewhat gets overlooked... But it's master-class in subtle powerful direction.. Every aspiring director needs to take note...
For Beauty and the Beast to be nominated was a milestone that generated more news and press than the actual winner. Animation had never been considered in a Academy slot outside of score and song (Save for Snow White's special Oscar) To have seen this as a young artist was amazing, and I knew it was a step that would be remembered for ever.
@@generalgrievous3731 yes but those are animated shorts. A guaranteed win for animation. And all those animated shorts are kids material, along with the nominations. To be an animated kids film nominated along side Silence of the Lambs and JFK (which are films for adults) for the highest recognized award a film can get was unheard.
Elizabeth Taylor looks GREAT!!!!!!! She was 60 years old here. I saw her in person in 1987 in San Francisco when she introduced her Passion perfume. I never forgot that day.
Great, great, great film! Excellent movie! The music, the acting, the thrilling action, the suspense, and many other things. Everything about 'The Silence Of The Lambs' is excellent. Defiantly one of the best films of all time.
RIP Kenneth Utt (July 13, 1921 - January 19, 1994), aged 72 RIP Paul Newman (January 26, 1925 - September 26, 2008), aged 83 RIP Dame Elizabeth Taylor (February 27, 1932 - March 23, 2011), aged 79 You will be remembered as legends.
It has been over 30 years since this film released and it has still not left the public consciousness. That is the staying power of this movie. It's a pop culture phenomenon and "The Godfather" of all thrillers . There is a reason it sits at #7 on the all ranked Best Picture winners list (all 96 of them that won Best Picture) over at IMDB because it's a true classic and beloved by almost every audience member who sees it and one where the Academy actually got it right. I recently showed it to my young nephews and their friends (aged between 16 and 19) and they were all spell bound by it saying it was one of the best films they had ever seen.
This was the last time Elizabeth Taylor would present the Best Picture Oscar; she was 60 years old at the time of broadcast. What a way to celebrate her birthday! Sadly she would pass away 19 years later after various health problems. And it was also, if I remember correctly, the only time Paul Newman, actor and co-owner of what was then Newman-Haas Racing and not related to composers Alfred, Lionel, Randy, Thomas and David Newman, presented the Best Picture Oscar; he was 67 years old, 7 years older than Taylor. RIP Elizabeth Taylor and Paul Newman, the latter of which passed away just 16 years later at the age of 83!
I love both movies. ''Beauty and the Beast'' is indeed a Disney Classic, a GREAT musical, one of my favorite movies ever. And at least, received a nomination for Best Picture of the year, becoming the first animation to do so in this category. ''The Silence of the Lambs'' is also a classic! A Thriller classic! Both movies are masterpieces!
Victoria's Thoughts Paul Newman is the King of Oscar.. followed by Marlon Brando, Dustin Hoffman, Jack Lemmon, Jack Nicholson... While Katharine Hepburn is the queen of Oscar..
After watching the dismal Oscars 2021, this is what it lacked--genuine movie stars who elevated the evening. Not just the great Newman and Taylor but also Hepburn, Poitier, Fonda , Moreno and many more.
Very Brave choice. It is not the type of movie that usually wins awards, a really uncommon topic. But it won all the 5 major awards that night. What a triumph!
Conrad Guiney Apart from The Silence Of The Lamb, The Exorcist also falling into the same category....The movie also nominated in best picture..but never win...But still now remembered as a milestone in film industry
Well this film was a classic before it won. It came out in February 1991 and won the oscars in March 1992. 13 MONTHS LATER. It was already available on video. No one went to see this film thinking it was an award winning picture - people went to see it because they wanted to be entertained but unlike today they actually released good movies in January and February.
I saw this movie in the theatre...b4 the awards....I was sitting on the edge my seat during this movie...I knew...Anthony, Jodie and the movie would win....
Other animated films like The Secret of NIMH, The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, The Lion King, Toy Story, Toy Story 2, The Incredibles, Finding Nemo, Ratatouille and Wall-E should also be Best Picture nominees.
CTDawg Townsend but only Up and Toy Story 3 got nominated but Up lost to The hurt locker and toy story 3 lost to the king's speech, Which I must watch the hurt locker,it's so FRICKIN' AWESOME!
Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs should also be a Best Picture nominee considering it’s the reason why we have feature-length animated films and it helped give the Disney studio their identity.
3:35 The old man, I knew he looked familiar, he played a small role in the film.... the scene at the funeral home where they exam the body. He was the funeral director (mortician) or something. Anywho, this film is one of my favorites, great acting by Hopkins & Foster!
I saw this movie at a theater in Newton, MA. I'd stopped by the theater previously and was given an invitation to watch a new movie starring Jodie Foster and Anthony Hopkins. No more info was given that I can remember. A friend and I went and we were blown away by the picture. When it ended we (the entire audience) were asked to stay and fill out a questionnaire about every aspect of the film. On the way out there were several men in suits hanging out in the lobby. Then nothing. A year to a year and half went by and we were wondering what ever happened to that great movie. It eventually was released and the rest is history.
Wow, look at these years. Some of the best pictures that has ever been made are in competition. But now, it was between Roma, Green Book and The Favourite. Heartbreaking, right? Though I feel very close to those years, it is staggering to see it's been 27 years.
This is one one my fave videos of La Liz at the Oscars (theres more tho) but this one is cool becuz the audience recognizes Paul Newman right away and kind of maybe see Elizabeth Taylor at his side. Only when she reaches the podium does the audience realize its La Liz in all her splendor, you hear the applause roar for her. Amazing take.
I definitely agree! If I ever make it big in Hollywood and become a member of the Academy, that is something I will strongly recommend! I think that they should have it in this categories: Best Voice Actor, Best Voice Actress, Best Supporting Voice Actor, Best Supporting Voice Actress, and Best Animated Feature (which they already have.)And Maybe even Best Drawing too. Maybe!
It's easy to see what is happening here. It's Horror movie buffs Vs. Disney buffs. can we just appreciate the fact that the idea of "what a great movie is" is evolving. this was the first win for a horror film and the first nomination for a animated film. times are changing and i don't think it will take to long for an animated movie to finally snatch the Oscar.
Silence of the Lambs and Beauty and the Beast are two of my favorite movies of all time. So I'm ok as long as one of them won. I have never even heard of the other three...
Funny how the Horror film, the feminist road movie and the Disney flick are considered classics and remembered to this day while the Epic films about JFK and Bugsy are forgotten.
@JackKlompus13 WHAT?!?! These 2 people r Hollywood royalty. If u don't know who they r, both of their names r in the description box. Paul Newman & Elizabeth Taylor.
You forgot It Happened One Night. That the the first movie to sweep all five major Oscars than it went to One Flew Over the Cukoos Nest and then The Silence of the Lambs
@SKSelphie It is a very, very good movie. I've watched it several times and still get the chills whenever Barney says to Clarice; "He's (Hannibal) past the others in the last cell, I put a chair out for you" As to whether it is THE best movie ever made is down to personal taste
not only did this win best movie, but BOTH Hopkins and Foster won best actor and actress… for the academy to give all 3 of these awards to one film, that means it had to be the best by a landslide
