I worked as a server at a restaurant in Vancouver, one one night I had to serve Mr. Tortorella. He was very quiet while ordering, very polite, I pretended to not know who he was and treat him like a regular Joe. Meanwhile, if there were two coaches I would ever wanted to have played for, it's him and Herb Brooks. When I brought him the bill, couldn't help it, said "good luck this year Mr. Tortorella". He said in the calmest tone "I hope Horvat hustles as much as you do around this place". Literally everything I could do to not burst out laughing. He also is a great tipper. More than fair. I donated that tip to Canuck Children's hospital in honour of it. I also donate to his charity for dogs he founded with his wife, at least once a year. Torts is a guy you want to go through hell and back for. He'd do that for you.

I had the privilege of watching Jody Shelley for three seasons with the Halifax Mooseheads (QMJHL). He was a training camp walk-on in 1994 and quite literally fought his way onto the roster. In his final major junior season, as the Mooseheads' captain, he scored 25 goals (to complement his 420 penalty minutes) and carried the team on his shoulders to within one game of a Memorial Cup berth (despite playing throughout the playoffs with a completely torn knee ligament). He is, to this day, the most popular player in the Mooseheads' franchise history, and the story of his rise to the NHL and subsequent 11 year career is truly (and this word is often overused, but not in this case) inspirational.

“All he wants you to do is work…” Having watched the Flyers dig themselves out of a two goal deficit, then finish off the Minnesota Wild in overtime last night (24/01/12) that ethic was very evident. Being a Flyers fan since childhood, and watching the game, I felt extremely confident that they’d prevail last night. The Flyers beat the spirit out of their opponent - it was a joy to witness.

As a Wings fan, I was scared to death when Torts' name came-up as a possible coach. We lived through Babcock, and my thoughts were "one of those SOB's is enough on this team". I appreciate you guys - and the other guests who spoke of Torts - for clearing the air. My opinion of him has completely changed, and I now think the Wings missed an opportunity. As for Jody Shelly, I wholeheartedly agree with @ReverseMojo comment. If there was any guy who just continued to prove people wrong about his career, it was Jody. I too was able to see him in Halifax over a period of years, and was constantly amazed by his effort. He fought his way into the NHL (literally and figuratively) and managed to get a great career out of his effort, playing a very tough role. I always told my son that Jody shows what you can accomplish when you work hard.

It's funny that just about every player that played for Torts loved him as a coach, yet a ton of fans still think of him as the person the media portrays him as.

He scratched HOFer Mike Modano for the end of the season to keep him from 1,500 games. Nuff said…
