Welcome to our RU-vid channel. We'll be talking gear, music, culture, equipment, and whatever, and we really hope you'll stick around! You can tell we're serious about this now because I've even let Ben put me making a "music industry influencer's face" in the thumbnail!
For this vid, we'll be sticking to some gear talk. We'll be going on a bit of a 1990s gear deep dive for the next few videos, and I hope you'll join us. I've had over thirty years to be intrigued by these Joe Barden pickups - from the Danny Gatton article in Rolling Stone, to the times I first tried and heard people gigging with them back in the day, and testing the Zion Ty Tabor loaded with these at NAMM in '97. What do I think of them now?
All of the fine stuff we talked about at the end is for sale here: carolineguitar...
carolineguitar...
Buy our random *&^%! so we can make more videos!

I have a set of Joe Barden pick ups in my 83 fender Stratocaster. They are prototype pick ups from Joe. I used to see Joe Barden down at the old Birchmere club in Alexandria. He would bring a new recipe of his pick ups, and Danny would try them out that evening.

I like the Duncans the most. Very warm, sweet, balanced, and bright without being cloying. I've been curious about the Five-Two set.

Hey! Yeah, we installed the Duncans into Ben's 1974 black strat and he's loved them. Very even sounding and sweet.

I have an original set of Danny Gattons in a thinline-style home built Tele. With a .47 orange drop, I set the guitar tone on about 6-7 and don't feel like I need to adjust the amp afterwards. The sparkle and punch are still there, just less transient. They have much more available frequency than traditional style pickups. Like a lot of gear, I think many people try something half-assed and don't explore how it interacts before proclaiming it terrible. Great review. Side note- if you are a sloppy player, these pickups will remind you to work on your technique!

Excellent well spoken advice on these pickups, well done.

Love this video. Bardens are tricky, if you bring them close to the strings they will be brighter and aggressive. Lowering will tame the brightness making them sonically close to alnico mags. I have them on my tele, and they are not coming off.

I think the chocolate pudding strat sounds the best.

It really sounds great. The Vintage Custom pickups by Porter are really well made and fit the vibe of that guitar.

I ran a set in my S style guitar for a long time. Your description is spot on especially when changing instruments but I find that with any guitar

My 2 Best Guitars have Original Barden SSS pickups and they have been Flawless, One is E Series MIJ and has Peral Schaller Tuners like SRV used in Metallic Red with a Vega Trim Bridge and Maple Fretboard

Not bad pickups. But, there's always a trade off with noiseless pickups. Always.

Pretty sure these were the pickups Ty Tabor had in his Zion Radicaster that he used to record the King's X album Dogman. Thanks for the review.

I’ve used them since 2003 on two guitars. Very full range sounding. A very clear “punch”. They can be a little annoying to my ear in the mids at times and they dont compress like some alnicos but - they are what they are and are pretty damn good. Never tried the new ones but Joe told me he had no consultation w JBE so he is not sure if they’re making the same product now. Maybe they went to former employees - i am not saying they are bad - just what he told me.

Great stuff. I'm here for it. You can instantly hear the notes jump off of the fretboard with the Bardens! Like some old PAFs!

I agree! Changing amp settings for different guitars is pretty normal for me anyway, so I don't see that as a problem really.

What was the resistance of the pots in the Barden Strat? Did you include the treble bleed cap? I've used the Barden Two Tones in my Les Paul for the past 15 years or so. It's a tremendously versatile guitar. The single coil mode adds a lot, especially if you slightly blend in one pickup with the other. I have a set of the Strat pickups coming in. The ones in this video seem bright, but I feel they can probably be tamed. I usually keep the volume knob down on the guitar, and I'd be surprised if they still seem too bright. Bardens typically can be 'too much' of some things, but functionally, that often translates to 'room to spare'.

Listening to all three strats here, they all seem to sound very much the same. If the Bardens are quiet on stage especially in bars with neon lights etc, I'd say Yes please! I've found stacked humbucker strat pickups to sound muddy which is not why we have a strat or tele in our arsenals! I think I'm taking the dive.

Interesting comparison Philippe. Obviously the guitars would have different acoustic properties so a more forensic comparison would have been swapping pickups in the one guitar but, I understand what a massive pain in the ass that would be and, your findings are pretty much the same as what I found with Bardens when I tried them way back when. I also note I had the same experience with EMGs used in conjunction with other guitars.
@CarolineGuitarCo
@CarolineGuitarCo Год назад
Absolutely. I also noticed when we reviewed the clips that I *played* differently through the Bardens, but I think that’s almost less a cause and more a result of those pickups. We also deliberately left the Princeton on the same settings the whole time, and I would have dialed it differently if I were adapting it to the Bardens’ strengths.

Ever used nickle or flatwound strings? They could tame some of the high end you're mentioning.
@CarolineGuitarCo
@CarolineGuitarCo Год назад
Definitely could. In my experience, many ceramic mag pickups impart a kind of piano-like definition to the wound strings, and a nickel string would do a lot.
@wrm90
@wrm90 Год назад
@@CarolineGuitarCo Try flatwounds then. I compare them to a physical compressor. They remove certain overtones and harmonics from the sound and leave you with a truer tonic note.
@wrm90
@wrm90 Год назад
They tame the high end naturally and reign in the sound. Almost like a grand piano vs an upright that's been sitting around for a while.
@wrm90
@wrm90 Год назад
@@CarolineGuitarCo Also tuning a half step or whole step down can get rid of some annoying high end.
@sirvidia

@@wrm90 only on the wound strings, though. Top three would sound the same

The attack is snappy and bright, which is exciting at first to Strat-tuned ears. But overall, it seems like the Bardens do too much of a good thing.
@mdshack6371
@mdshack6371 6 месяцев назад
If you' are not working the volume and tone knob, you might not be working on your sound possibilities when using this pickup.. You might be strumming, hacking and wanking rythem chords with no regard for dynamics. Adjusting the tone pot, especially when mixing pickups allows extreme tonal variation far beyond the norm. Everything is relative.

I love how you put the actual INDUCTANCE readings. Unlike DC resistance, Henries really can tell you the actual output of a pickup.
@CarolineGuitarCo
@CarolineGuitarCo Год назад
Thank you! Though in the case of the Bardens, it can be deceptive. They have lower inductance, but their output clipped the Princeton much quicker than the other pickups. I think it can be a very good indicator of the frequency response.
