Once hope is gone this country will be as well. Power that rises fast falls fast and we are still considered a child when it comes to being a country. Here's an example, "The police are headed to your house" if you had used "is" it would have been incorrect, if you were saying an individual like he, then it would be "He IS headed to your house". "They ARE heading to your house". I'm no English teacher but I hoped that gave a better understanding.
