The man who fasted for a year was Angus Barbieri of Tayport Scotland. He was 27 years old and weighed 456 lbs when he began the fast in July 1966 and 180 lbs when he ended the fast 382 days later. The whole time his fast was supervised by doctors at Maryfield Hospital who monitored his condition and recommended vitamin and electrolyte supplements as necessary along with coffee, tea and water. I don't know how he came to get so heavy but his family kept a fish and chip shop which may have had something to do with it.

"Everybody has a plan until they get punched in the mouth." - Mike Tyson. Many people see these videos and when it comes to work they get a taste and quit. They want instant results. These stories are extreme and have a person motivating. The accountability is how you get through it. At the end, you have to look at yourself. The guy that lost all that weight and gained 100 back will most likely gain even more weight than he had previously. Its easy when someone is telling you to do something. When you have to motivate yourself, many people quit. I wish this wasn't true but most people will quit.

The most weight that I gained after a bodybuilding show is 20 lbs in a week. It totally shocked my system. The reason that guy gained so much weight afterwards is that he was on a very unrealistic diet. I’ve found that best way to loose weight is to put or go on a realistic diet. Eating fruits and vegetables at all times isn’t realistic. Been there done that, the moment you eat normal you will start to put on weigh.

1. No soda, or any other drink with chemicals. Just water, natural tea or homemade lemonade. Everything else is a no no. If ppl did that they'd lose weight without even doing anything else. 2. Find out what type of eat schedule works for you. Some ppl need a little often, some do better with more food, but in longer intervals. 3. Chew and eat slower than what we're normally accoustum to. 4. Mild portion control, it doesn't need to be some Nazi rations either, just not a be Asshole. 5. Obviously move around pshyically, but if you do the first 4 things than you don't even need to kill yourself to maintain a average body.

Nathan Henson Good advice. My advice based on the current scientific literature: eat plenty of fruits and vegetables with fiber, good fibrous grains, dairy, seafood, legumes, nuts & seeds, lean meats. Avoid excessive intakes of saturated fats, added sugars, refined starches processed meats. That doesn’t mean you can’t have some. But the totality of the literature indicates we should keep these items on a low to moderate limit. Avoid extended periods of overeating.

I stopped working out after I met my goal of losing 41 lbs after having 13 pulmonary embolisms. Went from 216 to 175lbs. I have an at home gym I've built up over the years, I just lost motivation. I needed to hear this Joe, thank you. Hopefully in the future I can link up with some people that'll keep me straight. I dropped 41lbs in 2.5 months with intermittent fasting, clean eating, & macro counting. I wouldn't workout more than 2 hours a day(typically a strenuous 45min-1hour), dropping my caloric intake based on what my weight was for that week. I even had the calories I burned in my sleep accounted for. Side note: I had the embolisms because I sat too long in the car on a 1300 mile road trip. No previous issues, nothing. Healthy heart, liver, all was good. Just sat too long. Thankfully I was always extremely active when I was younger, otherwise I'm not sure if I would've made it. A coworker of mine lost her brother in law to just one embolism.

Joe talking about making a schedule as a motivating tool. Definitely what's helped me the most these past couple of years! Though with me it's more about making up a 'streak' and keeping it going. Learned French every day for two years straight! Went through a bunch of books, online courses, youtube series, apps,... just to keep that streak going and keep pushing forward. Took cold showers straight through winter for like 5 months, every day. Worked out for a couple of years there, for nine months I worked out every day. Read classic literature every night because it was just something I always wanted to do. Right now I'm 27 days into teaching myself how to play the piano. Was always something I wanted to do, learn an instrument, could never get it together, seems to be going fine now, finally. Also wrapping up a 4-month diet. Been writing down everything I ate, really paid attention to it, skipped some meals, had a bunch of smaller-than-usual-for-me meals, nothing too complicated. Went from 210 down to 177. With the ultimate goal being 'under 176 lbs, or under 80 kg.' I'm 6'4'' so I'm kinda skinny, but that's what I wanted.:D Hey, I'm not perfect, a lot of the stuff I've started through this time, I've also quit, like working out! Some stuff I stopped because I just ended up thinking it was pointless or I found that I could keep it going without needing to do 'em every goddamn day. Still, for a guy like me, that's always had issues motivating himself, the fact that I managed to keep some of this shit going for years, that's pretty crazy. And, whatever, I'm doing something, I'm trying. With the power of the STREAK!

What Joe describes at the end (100 pushups/ChinUps/situps) is actually how I started to lose 120lbs. Eventually doubled it to 200 and then into more full body cardio/plyo excercise, but starting with cumulative goals like Joe suggests is actually a great way to begin.

fasting helped me lose about 30 lbs. I felt amazing. I had so much energy, felt light as a feather, but the only downside is how boring it gets. You don't realize how much of your day is occupied by eating until you don't. The longest I ever went was a week and I probably could have gone longer but not eating is boring and "weird" to others. Which, if our ancestors had to follow herds of mammoth across miles and miles of field, they probably _did_ eat only once or twice a week.

nat banz I cut my caloric intake in half, cut out simple carbs, and ate 1g of protein for every pound I wanted to weigh, a day. Only ate poultry, raw veggies, and low-glycemic carbs. Supplemented with Nordic Naturals fish oil, creatine, milk thistle (liquid), whey isolate, 200mgs of caffeine 2x a day, tribulus, 4000iu of vitamin D, and BCAA aminos. I was at the gym every day. I’d train weights every other day, with a 30min cardio session to warm up, and worked my way up to 90 mins on the elliptical on the days I wasn’t lifting. Sometimes I’d cardio 2x a day. Trick is, to get your heart rate between 130-150 during cardio, and keep it there as long as possible. Nothing else matters-ignore distance. Ignore resistance and interval training, until you’re able to do those 90 minutes easily. A great weight-training program to start? www.mensjournal.com/health-fitness/eternal-beach-body-workout-plan/ Here’s a source to determine your daily caloric intake. Cut your daily need by 50%, and don’t increase until your fat stores are depleted: www.calculator.net/calorie-calculator.html Don’t even weigh yourself, because you’re going to be building muscle, and the number will discourage you. Being obese is NOT acceptable. Some people don't get a chance at life, children born prematurely or not at all, people are taken before their time in freak accidents or disease and then there's some people who decide to use their chance by abusing their body and taking it for granted. Honestly its disgusting and they're no better than drug addicts, this is coming from someone who used to be 120kg (264lbs) now i weigh 79kg (174lbs) work out 5-6 times a week, go boxing, hike up mountains, rarely drink or eat junk food, dont do social media and just generally live a more fulfilling life. As you get older, you lose muscle. Something like 1% per year. But muscle is closely linked to your resting metabolic rate. When you control for muscle mass, ageing doesn't cause weight gain. Different for women, who have hormonal chsnges going on. But anyway, you're doing well for your age, but I'd say if you lifted, some of that fat would fall off!

If you consistently pursue pleasure and avoid discomfort you may never know how amazing it feels on the flip side. Once you really embrace discomfort and take control of unhealthy pleasures - your physical, mental and spiritual health just skyrocket. AND there’s no crash. You stay elevated as long as you continue. Do the do’s and you’ll get the gets.

What's the point of making someone walk 20 miles a day and putting them on an unsustainable diet? It sounds like they just used this guy to get his extreme makeover to promote whatever they're doing. For a diet to work longterm, they have to be able to sustain it. It's the biggest reason people gain back weight after dieting. Keto is a great example of that. Why wouldn't you give the guy protein? Eating high protein gives you satiety. I'm a complete junk food junkie, but eating high protein got me over it.
@tonedowne

Exactly. It has to be about sustainable lifestyle adjustments. He could have spent the time after he got the guy down to a functional human weight, to reprogram his mind to a way of eating and exercising that will last forever. The results wouldn’t have been so dramatic, but there is more chance that the guy would have continued to lose weight and gain strength, instead of immediately blowing out.

I have done this. Ate only fruit and vegetables and salad. Lost 1 pound a day. Could only stand it for a week or 2, when I added small amounts of protein lost 1/2 pound a day. If I added 2 slices of bread I lost NO weight. If I wanted to lose weight fast I would go on the fruit and veg diet. But it gets boring before long.

Alpt of fruits and veggies have ridiculous amounts of sugars and carbs in them. I keep my fruits to only blueberries and strawberrys. I dont eat high carb veggies or potatoes, etc. I eat cabbage , spinach, mixed greens, etc. I incorporate healthy fats like olive, avacodo, almond oil , as well as ghee. I dont eat red meat, it inflames me super bad. I eat chicken and fish. Basically it's a version of keto. I've lost 90 lbs. I'm learning to tweak things here and there.

@tann_man
@tann_man 4 года назад
Mansplainer ideally bf% / 20 = % of weight you should lose every week. Throw in a diet break at caloric maintenance the last week of the month & that turns out to be roughly 60lbs in a month for someone at 600lbs. In 72 weeks that puts them at roughly 200lbs. That’s an incredibly long diet so that’s probably still not feasible

I’ve yo-yo dieted all my life. I’m 43. I don’t need motivation to lose weight a single more time in my life. How? I started eating predominantly whole plant foods, as much as I want within the grains, beans, veggies, fruits, nuts, seeds, and herb categories. I even use honey and maple syrup and milk-free choc chips. I eat tons of whole grain bread! I LOVE my food! And more than that, I love the freedom from addiction to food and from the stress of constant dieting :-). The Bible and the Blue zones research contains all the information and proof you need to know that this is the right way to eat to be truly free! I haven’t counted a calorie in a year. My body stays at its ideal weight for the first time in my whole life! And I enjoy food as much and more than ever. No guilt. And as Wim Hof would say, “no force.”

Dr Jason Fong does lots of good research on fasting, and has lots of videos out on how to do this safely. I see the quick results in this video. It's probably not the best way to do it. And leads to rebound and metabolic set point issues and other issues. Better to actually research to make lasting improvement. It's often better just to straight fast with water than to eat some.
