He’s mentioned the story before in social media posts, though how this connects with the rest of the song I’m not too sure. But since it’s a Joe Hawley song, anything is possible.

Maybe the song is describing 2 people doing the deed in 1940's japan, then pearl harbor happens. Then at the end the tsunami may be a reference to the atomic bomb, killing the couple

I know this comment is really late, but i only just saw this video and wanted to share my opinions, at least onthe sexual aspects of it. I always thought that, because velveteen is a type of fancy, soft fabric, the lady inthe song was refering to herself in that sense; that her body is great and she is bragging about it. And that 'fear not any pain to which i am unprepared' is more about how the man in the song, Joe, can be rough with her without the fear of her getting hurt, which in my mind ties in with the references to rabbits. As for the 'old childlike empress' i had assumed its more to do with her energy and playful nature. But hey, thats just a theory, a TH theory.

I’ve been sort of creeped out by this song for a while and the moment the doc dropped i thought “oh I should’ve seen this coming.” I always interpreted it as the partner being 17 since the syllables match up more than with any other -teen number I don’t think we should ignore what he’s done but instead acknowledge it and continue to enjoy his music without supporting him as a person, I’ve seen the sentiment of just ignoring the drama with a lot of TH fans and that really rubs me the wrong way Also as a trans man the shit he said with the original transphobia drama is genuinely transphobic and we shouldn’t be treating it like it was blown out of proportion Overall yes it’s a weird song especially when paired with what’s he’s done

I don't believe this is any kind of "foreshadowing" or whatever. It is simply about roleplay. "Velveteen" is a cloth that's like velvet but not velvet.
