I kinda find it ironic that this happened while they were recording a music video for a song called "Good Day", because that most definitely wasn't a good day for them-
do you hear the flibbidy jibber jabber with an oh my god i gotta get out of here or i’ll have another worry to sell another story to tell another timepiece ringing the bell, do you hear the clock stop when you reach the end no you know it must be never ending comprehend if you can but when you try to pretend to understand you resemble a fool even though you’re only a man so give it up and smile
Same it's so fucking good. I love how monotone Joe sounds throughout the song, and then you get the "THIS MORNING I WOKE FROM A NIGHTMARE AND FELL OUT OF BED" part. And also just the disturbingly beautiful harmony of Joe and Zubin throughout the song.
I always thought that the song was supposed to feel like a sort of advertisement for RP, constantly talking about how safe it is at night, and then the "Rotary Park is ablaze after dark" line is supposed to be the corporate mask finally coming off and acknowledging the horrible stuff that happens there.
rotary park is ablaze after dark this line, to me, means the moment of chaos during joe and zubin getting robbed. Because that was AFTER DARK, during the day when they were rob. Ablaze also means "filled with anger or another strong emotion" which might be fitting for the robbers but i think also joe and zubin, they are angry, scared, sad, etc etc recalling the event.
This is a different editing style, a bit more like mine. I like how you did it. This was very insightful with the little information we truly know about the Rotary park incident. It's a very well loved song with some classic unclear meanings from Joe. Overall, I really enjoyed this video!
The line about Pontiac stamping his name was a reference to how the British made a truce with Pontiac after their defeats, and Pontiac never attacked them again(the same goes for the British to Pontiac). We know that didn't happen, but it most likely alludes to how Joe and Zubin don't go near Rotary Park anymore, and when they do, while they expect the same event as last time, it doesn't happen.
The lion “dreaming of Zion” is a reference to a building just around the corner of the Pontiac, MI rotary park. I suggest going to google street view, iirc it’s southeast of the park
This is a very interesting explanation and analysis! Ive always thought of the song as trying to ironically paint Rotary Park as a swell place and (in some way) lie to the listener to make the song sound eerie and not quite right if that makes sense lol. Love this different view of the song!
2:52 I believe that "Chief Pontiac" may refer to a police chief in Pontiac michigan "stamping his name on the mark" and dismissing claims about the mugging. By stamping his name (or signing) he says that rotary park is safe. This is reinforced by your analysis of the "beuracracy throes" line when you say that perhaps they did nothing to help. 5:52
Great video dude! It’s a of a bit different style and I think it looks good, the editing must of been a lot of work cause b-roll and a lovely visit for talpat aswell lol anyways I suck I writing comment’s, bottom line is that it’s a great video had a good time watching and kept me hooked all the way thru.
I have a theory about the “Chief Pontiac stamped his name on the mark” line: it’s not actually talking about Chief Pontiac, instead, it’s talking about a police chief *in* Pontiac. Maybe him “stamping his name on the mark” is him signing some document related to the police investigation of the mugging?
Woah, this was an awesome explanation video. I don't really understand Joe's poetic writing, so i really like to see these videos to know what the songs are about! Could you do a video explaining Turn The Lights Off? I've seen comments saying that it's about puberty, but i don't really get it.
This might be a stretch but in Turn The Lights Off (which Joe wrote) there’s a line that says “And everybody wants to get evil tonight But all good devils masquerade under the light” He & Zubin were robbed and mugged, which was done by an “evil” person. Idk if someone else has said this
i think the ablaze after dark might mean something different they got robbed in the day so their rage and emotions hate the day there, thus opting for the night but then they realize Its the location, not the time
It’s honestly quite sad to know this little story that happened during the filming for Good Day. No one deserves to get robbed and get beaten especially when it causes trauma. Life or Death situations can be difficult to deal with it and i wouldn’t be surprise if this was a little bit hard reliving that experience just to think of the lyrics by itself.
