and that he’s told it for 10 years any time Norm’s name gets brought up because they didn’t actually know each other aside from plane rides & a couple spots
Norm once talked about how that was a specific goal of his. He wanted to be able to ask an audience to yell out any topic and be able to immediately start telling jokes about it.
Most of the more severe illnesses happen to people by surprise, unexpectantly, impacting first in the brain, then in the corresponding organ which that part of the brain controls. The end of WWI had absolutely everything to do with the Flu and lung TB outbreak that occurred killing millions. In nature, the biological conflict linked with a territorial fear (just what it means-a fear in your territory, your home, your community, etc.) is a widening of the bronchia (tissue loss). Your body attempts to widen your bronchia in order to allow more air into your lungs to give you more strength and energy to fight to keep your territory safe. Stay with me.......The biological conflict linked with a death fright impacts the lungs. The lungs attempt to grow larger in order to allow more air in because breath equals life, as we all know. No breath equals death. While you are in the fear or death fright conflict, you notice no symptoms of “disease”, except you have cold hands, cold feet, you can’t sleep, you awaken at 3 AM every night, you have little appetite. During the war, millions of people were in fear of the bombing of their homes and cities where the war was most active. Fearing for their lives, their loved ones in the war, their ability to survive. The food in the stores was sparse due to shortages. This lasted for 4 long years! The longer the conflict, the worse the healing phase. Within 2 weeks of the German Chancellor announcing the end of WWI, these millions of people ALL went into the healing phase all at the same time. It is during the healing phase that you experience symptoms of illness! What is the healing phase of the bronchia widening? Severe bronchitis, pneumonia. The body attempts to refill this lost tissue and you experience inflammation, fever, coughing, body aches, fatigue, etc. What is the healing phase of the extra lung tissue that grew? Decomposing of the tissue by TB bacteria and fungi. The symptoms of this healing phase are: severe coughing up of blood and tissue, fever, inflammation, severe mucous, body aches, fatigue. During this decomposing of the extra tissue (tumor), the body expels a lot of protein, and without replenishment, severe protein loss can result in death. Antibiotics did not exist yet. If TB bacteria does not exist in a person or they have been vaccinated against TB (big mistake), then the tumor will simply encapsulate and become dormant and not harm you. Who died during the Spanish Flu? Mainly the poor who could not afford to buy meat and proper nourishment, and the people who were directly impacted by the bombings and destruction of their homes. Millions of people suffered fear and death frights during the fighting of WWI, and millions of people all went into healing at the end of it. Not everyone was affected because not everyone suffered the same way. It’s not a “flu”, it’s not something you “catch”. It’s biological, meaningful, and unavoidable. One hundred years later, a Fear Campaign begins, using the media to spread it......
Norm Macdonald is one of those people you can't even describe how special they are. Every time you try to explain it you're just lost for words. One of the greatest of all time stand ups.
Well said... I saw him live in Toronto and there was a heckler beside me.. needless to say he got boo'd out the place ..norm fucked him up good ..good laugh lol
Because he wasn't insanely special. Just a really chill dude, with a good head on his shoulder, who happens to be really smart and funny. He's special compared to 99% of the world, but he seemed barely above average with the goats. My opinion dont be mad
Every time I hear Joe tell this story I can't believe he never caught on how much Norm loved fucking with people and it didn't matter who they were. He got a kick out of absurdity. Norm clearly played up that 'quit smoking' bit throughout the flight and got the payoff he wanted.
I'm no fan of Ari (he can be entertaining but he seems like a massive jerk and not someone I'd ever want to hang around for long) but we shouldn't look at the situation like that. Norm was sick and sadly he lost his battle with the disease; it's not anyone's fault and we should just remember Norm for the funny and good guy that he was.
That quote is gold! I can think of a few times when he was bombing hard but Norm still always had a big smile on his face! Remember that roast where hes telling all the super old jokes, like 1920s old! Everyone was so confused😂
I heard in the early days when Norm would bomb, he would wait at the door when everyone was leaving and shake everyone's hand and say thanks for coming. Genius
How many times do we have to hear the story about Ari looking up puppies on youtube? He says it every week like it's some brilliant social experiment, meanwhile literally everyone knows how the youtube algorithm works.
Contrary to Joe’s idea of Norm being totally transparent and real, Norms philosophy of comedy was the polar opposite-every stand-up gig he ever did was a game of poker, let alone his closest relationships. He was an outlaw cowboy who held his cards flat against his chest, but every now and then you could get a glimpse of his hand, of both the cards and of his chest-one a royal flush, and the other a heart of gold.

I've been obsessed with norms comedy for years, this is the hardest celebrity death I've ever experienced. I never thought I'd be hit this hard by something like this. Rest easy, I hope to see you again.
The part that hits the hardest is norm wasn't a celebrity. He was the best friend anybody never had. He was cold and funny but Jesus when he cried to letterman and told him he loved him that shit hurt. Goddamn old chunk a coal
When I heard he died, I was at my job. I stood up from my cubicle and went to the bathroom where I collapsed and wept for like 10 minutes. I'll still cry a little tear once in a while thinking about him. I honestly believe it was Norm that got me closer to God
Norm would have been more likely to have Joe on his show. But Joe probably wouldn't play along with reading the dumb joke cards or anything so what good would he be really
Norm was the best at breaking things down into their essence, true dry humor. To say somebody doesn't know something they just looked it up and wrote it down with a completely straight face is hilarious
Ironically I think you might just not understand what he meant. He is saying he knows the fun facts but he has no depth of knowledge on any of the subjects, even though he makes fun of others for not knowing.
@@boliusabol822 Yeah, you must have a big imagination to think I thought it hilarious. It was funny though, a good little chuckle. What I think would be hilarious though, is if somehow somewhere, someone told me you ended up with stage 4 cancer and you had a month to live but you get hit by the ambulance leaving the hospital. Haha
I think he was saying that Miller would look up obscure references in order to drop them into his bits, but he didn't really just know those things and put them in there organically.
@@superstimulatedminotaur3681 I think it sounds very Norm to be fucking around knowing full well he’d be throwing down for some cigs and soon as he got off the plan. But you’re also right, I’m an impulsive person so I could see that impulsive control valve sticking. Either way I love it. I loved norm.
@@superstimulatedminotaur3681 it's a joke. Whether norm actually quit smoking and smoked one for the joke, or never quit smoking, the punchline is the same. "All that tall about smoking, I had to have one!" Hilarious. Like a dangerfield joke, except irl and the setup was an entire plane ride. Classic norm.
@@yourmother3207 I think you're reading to much into it. His genius comedic timing in the moment was part of why it's funny, he called back to their conversation on the plane as a response to his absurd impulsivity. But to think that he pre-emptively planned on the plane to troll Joe is ridiculous, or that he bought a cigarette at that time just for the gag.
@@superstimulatedminotaur3681 possibly. I could see it either way. I don't think norm deliberately spent the entire plane ride talking about cigarettes as a setup to the joke but maybe he mentioned it in a very norm esque way and when he saw the convenience store it just happened to perfect the joke. I'm not saying it was all a setup from the minute norm saw joe on the plane.
@@spanqueluv9er lol you mean 'they' as in the one guy who commented and very clearly didn't understand the joke ? You should be saying 'he or she'. The 14 people who liked it, clearly got the joke. Newbies like you will never know. The OGs clearly understand this.
I can't believe I clicked this thinking that maybe there was a chance that Joe wouldn't tell his stories about twice sitting on a plane next to Norm and Norm trying to quit smoking but running to the store to get some.
I had the pleasure of seeing Norm, front row - center in Austin. Not many people can say they got roasted by Norm McDonald. 😊🤷♀️ I'm so proud to be able to say that.
When you meet a legend, &you’re talking about that legend, that story you’ve got, whatever it is, whoever you’re talking with, you’re going to tell it. &they’ll want to hear it.
@@md5820 Part of me thinks that was Norm having a laugh. When Adam was on talking about how Norm would be on when they did the next season? Norm really disliked the whole "death squad " crowd. And he never made hid his feelings when he had to do a show with a comedian he didn't respect, like Maron
What's weird to me is I knew and generally liked Norm since SNL days and it was only about two years ago I suddenly became aware of his uniqueness and comedy genius. I am so happy I delved into his rabbit hole a few years before he died, but regret I didn't look harder sooner and enjoyed him much longer. Time is fleeting.
@@lou1958 appreciate but I wasn't trying to make a point. If norm touched your soul just let him touch your soul. He had cancer for 9 years and told nobody. He was to good for this world.
I’ve been thinking a lot about why he didn’t say goodbye. I’ve concluded that he left us wanting more as a true entertainer would do. The man was all class. It was the kfc
Chadwick Boseman did pretty much the same thing. I don’t know that I would be able to do that. But I respect the hell out of those two guys for going out on their own terms.
To be fair, Norm DID tell his family and a few close friends, as did Chadwick. They just made no public statements or told people that weren’t in their close circles.
@Pepe MemeOnly 2 things I was comparing between them- 1. The fact they both were very well known people who died of cancer far too young and kept it mostly private to the vast majority of people. 2. The unexpected feelings I was left with after their decision to keep such heartbreaking matters so private. My intention wasn’t to compare the nature or quality of their work. But I must say that I view them similarly in the sense that they both seemed like good human beings.
The fact in this clip Mark Normad basically told Joe that Norm was OBVIOUSLY setting him up for a bit that entire plane ride and Joe STILL thinks Norm just randomly decided to quit smoking and un-quit for one single plane ride is the funniest part of this story
Joe is right he was wired different! 😂 I remember on a roast norm macdonald was on he was reading a newspaper and I can't remember the roaster who was at the podium but they roasted norm by saying "yeah Norm MacDonalds last movie was about as exciting as watching Henry Fonda picking blueberries on golden pond" 😂 norm very casually puts the newspaper down and says "who wouldn't wanna watch Henry Fonda pick blueberries?" 😂 Genius. Perfect delivery. No swearing. He is one of my all time favorites!
Got into norm only about 12 months ago nothing of him here really in the U.K one of the funniest humans I think have ever existed and gutted to of heard of him passing RIP absolute legend
This podcast was pretty fun, I love hearing them all get together in a group instead of one on one and shoot the shit it was pretty funny and insightful to just hear them all having a good time
When other comedians talk about you so highly like this after your passing, it truly means you were a *really special comedian.* _You will be missed Norm, but not forgotten._
I remember the first time I saw norm macdonald was at the santa barbara bowl with sandler, spade and a few others, I remember the entire bit he would try and light his cigarette, but right before it would light he would start another story and this went on for 15 mins or so. I swear it could of been 7 times he tried lighting it and each time he would stop and start another story and the whole crowd was cheering him on and then ahhh in sadness. Out of every bit by all the comedians and adam singing his hanukkah songs you could hear everyone talking with confusion on how norm wouldn't light his cigarette. He truly was the best story teller. RIP NORM
You know, I used to think he was cool for being aware of his flaws, but the way he’s still selling his utter dogshit comedy specials and calling himself a comedian really draws back from that. If he was even a decent stand up I’d probably like him a lot more, but I think his wild success has gotten to his head
Man this full podcast was so good, Joe only awkwardly didn't get the jokes about 4 times, for the most part he was actually cooler than I've ever seen him. Ari served as a perfect conduit between Joe and actual funny guys Normand and Gillis. There was a good chemistry in the room and even Joe knew it.
I was listening to norms san Francisco stand up the night he passed and been binge watching norm since on RU-vid... he was a genius and master of the craft! Always a sparkle in his eye and never gave a fuck as long as he got the laugh!
In related news, Brendan Schaub announced he has a new half hour comedy special coming out. I can't wait. The last one had as many laughs as when we put our cat down.
Joe’s told that Norm on an airplane story a million times on the podcast, and it never gets old. R.I.P. to the man with the greatest mind in comedy. Side note, ran into Norm a few years ago under the Queensboro bridge… what a battleaxe
I’ve never heard Norm say a bad word about Rogan so I have no idea what you are basing your opinions on, because they are opinions you didn’t know Norm, don’t act like you did.
You could just get Spotify for free to watch this. You can skip all of the ads. And you can watch in full screen. It’s literally the same thing as RU-vid, except you can’t comment. I don’t get why people wouldn’t use Spotify, it’s like boomers who are against cell phones or some shit like that, so ignorant.
it is honesty beautiful when you hear these stroies about people meeting or working with norm. because he goes out of his way to make people feel happy and laugh even if he hardly knows them. it seems like all he ever wanted was to make people smile, whether or not anyone else knew
