I work in an Amazon return center. We get all the stuff that customers opened and returned. After putting my hands on thousands of iPhones, watches, cameras, shoes, and all kind of expensive shit. Now I just see all this stuff as junk. People spends billions of dollars on these piles of junk.

I’m with Johaan. I’m 30, no social media presence or influence which is considered odd for my generation. But I identified the envy in the social media universe 9 years ago and quit FB and never went back. Never had a Instagram, Twitter, or anything of those sorts. My media footprint is limited to RU-vid which I view as a tool. You use a hammer for a purpose. To build something. Then you put it down. You don’t keep a hammer to your face 24 hours a day. I treat my phone the same way. And it is something I try to promote to my peers. Life is short and precious. Spend it making memories, not making statuses for people who don’t care about you

I have fb and it was making me see all the negative things around and just when I was thinking of deleting it, I realized I should have just deleted those negative shit on my feed, and follow stuff which would provide me with the information I was interested in. so just look at it that way, follow pages you think will be good for ur journey, there are tons of information on fb, so instead of liking selfies of other stupid people, unfollow them and put whatever matters in there. stop saying that only way to succeed is if you dont ever create fb or instagram.🤣

My fiancée and her family in Thailand are poor rice farmers. They have very little in material possessions. They have no furniture. They sit on a Thai mat that lays on a concrete floor for all of their meals and time with family. They live from day to day gathering food and living off of the land. Yet they are the most happy, pleasant, welcoming and unstressed people I have ever met my entire life. Every time I visit them in Thailand I come home feeling like a changed man for the better.

I only meant being aware if you are pursuing productivity for intrinsic or extrinsic reasons and yes that too will be up to the individual. The word right also means accurate as it relates to the goal you are pursuing. But an argument could be made that pursuing materialism is always a false value and therefore also immoral or not right, as it doesn't serve the individual or society.

I know a lot about training and nutrition and I also know some fitness models and being that cut is 1) not something you can maintain, as it requires dehydration/water manipulation and going to extreme lengths to lower your fat % and 2) isn’t healthy, since the optimal fat % health wise is actually a little higher and being super shredded requires an often unhealthy eating and training regiment when squared against longevity and long term physical and mental health factors. It also causes a level of obsessive focus on training/eating, that actually induces stress and lowers overall happiness. (You look amazing, but all you see is that you’re 10% body fat i.s.o. 6-8, so you’re not where you ‘should’ be > stress) Additionally the vast majority of fashion shoots have a good amount of photoshop/computer manipulation in the editing process. That is the very definition of unrealistic. Even these people who literally spend 7 days p/week building this body aren’t cut enough to go on the cover/billboard as they look. Promote health all day long, I’m 100% for it, and get people exercising and eating healthy, but please don’t tell us the fashion/fitness ads they talk about lead to healthier people or that people are lazy if they don’t look like that. That’s clearly not true.

Hari is spot on about junk values and using Social Media to try and create envy in other people. Thats one of the biggest reasons that web sites like Facebook suck raw - people making their “look at me and how cool my life is” posts. He is also right about materialism. Buying high priced status symbols may give you a relatively brief rush when you first acquire them but that wears off quickly and then all you have less cash in your bank account and a raging case of buyers remorse.

Mine to man, and I spend lots of time working, money, days away from the wife and family. I’d guess that maybe some of the time the people filming/ taking pics with their phones up probably might be at their first show; I did take a few very pixelated pics with my old ass Kyocera at the first phish show I went to in my late teens. I ended up going on to see like 20 shows that year and never looked back. I’m now 32, I’ve learned to accept that I can’t be wasting my energy over the things I cannot control. Some people figure it out(I don’t even take my phone out until it’s set break. And even then I don’t really use it unless looking for a friend)It also depends on what shows you go to as well. Not a massive issue at phish shows(a good 75% don’t have their phones out filming shit because that’s not what we’re their for, or they got handed a business card that read “stop talking while the bands playing please” which you should try because people have more of a chance at being able to get the message without you even having to say a word. We can’t do anything about people what other people do at a event that they paid(hopefully at face value) to see. Just gotta deal with it or stop going to what ever shows your going too. Haha not giving advice. but it only ruins it for you to focus because people will always be doing this at concerts; just like theres always a drunk person yelling “FreeBird”, people causing chaos, talking while the band plays. You know, all the shit younger kids like to do before they have a real view of life lol check out> “phish-tube, from SuperBall . You will see what I mean by no phones 🎉 lol

There's quite a bit of research that suggests that a household income of around $75k/year is where people's life satisfaction begins to plateau (much more than $75k/year is not going to increase life satisfaction by much, and there's even evidence that more than around $110k/year life satisfaction starts to go down). So pretty much the answer to the question of whether or not money makes you happy is: it does in the sense that it can cover your basic needs and offer you opportunities to pursue some hobbies (~$75k/year)

From personal experience nobody can tell you money doesn't make you happy or materialism doesn't matter it's something you have to experience and have before it sets in. I was materialistic, but i had to actually own all those things to realize it doesn't matter. Someone can tell you money doesn't make you happy or materialism doesn't matter, but then there is a ongoing battle because you constantly see it thrown in your face in society. Once you get all those things there is no longer a battle and you speak from the perspective of having it not lack of. Yes you can decide you don't need alot of money to be happy or materialistic shit, but you stuck with the stress of conflicting belief in society. Every wealthy person have to experience buying everything they want and being materialistic before they move on to other things. So go out get rich and blow money on alot of dumb shit and get it out your system than fight with the idea you not needing it because those conflicting ideas you fighting against will make you unhappy.

Hari is NOT using a bad example. Joe is just completely ignoring the other factor in the equation. Yes, it's *possible* for some people to get bodies like that, which is why it makes us nervous for a governing entity to restrict that advertising. However, what Hari said was correct--the majority of people will never look like that despite their best efforts. Those efforts are hindered very often by their station in life, and to think they can just turn that station in life around "with some good old fashioned hard work" is so divorced from reality that it's not even worth mentioning. No I don't want to restrict people from achieving seemingly impossible dreams, but I also don't want lives ruined because they were attempting the unattainable. People with Joe's position here won't acknowledge the latter.

Doesn't this set a dangerous precedent though? How many people shouldn't be able to achieve something until we can no longer advertise for it? If a model wearing jeans is standing, should the ad be pulled for the sake of disabled people. If someone is modeling glasses and has blue eyes should the add be pulled because a large amount of people cannot attain that? If a model is a certain height, age or gender should an ad be pulled? Why is it the case with weight and not the other things?

But what is important, is that now, we sustain, and innovate civilization as a whole. However, ourselves have been impact by these things that are, but distractions to sieve our energy away from us. And when we don't have that, we literally can't think what we want for ourselves. The West has not and still not accept the ideas from the East, and the South. We have allied ourselves, and watered down our values on the North. But once we integrate these, we can realize, our spirituality will slowly be unsuppressed.

This guy speaks the utter truth. Totally inspiring. Too bad Joe didn't seem to support and encourage him. He got too sidetracked by the marginalia.

The only thing I want to say about the recording a Elton John concert is that some people want to record for the memories not for the praise on social media. Like for example if I got a chance to see Linkin Park live I would want to record it so I can look back on it and be like wow I’m grateful too see them play. I could also understand his point of living your life through a phone.

The Brit guy literally just explained, in a roundabout way, a great truth about the human condition that we've known for roughly 2,500 years--desires lead to suffering. So to get rid of suffering, squelch or rid yourself of desires. Envy is a desire, a desire for more and for better to lord it over others. It doesn't matter what it is, as long as it elicits envy from your peers. If you rid yourself of this desire to make others envious, you're one huge step closer to finding inner peace. Guess who discovered this great truth 2,500 years ago?

'Discovered' lol. I assume from the reference to 2,500 years ago you are talking about that Sidhartha Gautama chap? Definitely not the case early religions all had a focus on desires. For instance, early Christian teachings, the Old Testament which pre-dated Jesus, and much of which pre-dated the Buddha for that matter, often termed it 'temptation'. Most religions all have similar 'practical' approaches to help reduce desire/craving/temptation - generosity, helping others, patience, abandon materiality (which is highly ironic, see below) etc. They differ in their spiritual approaches each have their own unique selling point in order to entice people in; all though promise a different form of higher existence (often after death). They also tend to like equality as a concept but are not so keen on it in practice, women in particular are often put to the side. On a side note, I termed it early Christian, it is more accurately perhaps Judaism because Christianity is an adapted form of Judaism (also with the New Testament of Jesus added onto it) and with some of Zoroastrianism (another religion in the region) added in. You can say the same for Buddhism, an adapted form of Hinduism. Religions often copy from and / or adapt another religion in the vicinity. Religions also have a propensity to like power and tend to have very lavish buildings, Buddhism is no exception all of which is highly ironic and greatly amuses me. Just google Buddhist palaces for instance (well no longer in the case of Tibet, they no longer occupy the grand Potala Palace, they were kicked out of China). I also googled 'Dalia Lama gold throne' for the fun of it, I guessed he would have one those at the top of religions love their thrones and palaces, and yes he does lol. If religions were a movie, they'd be loaded with plot holes! Of course, religious people have answers for everything because their belief system is based on fantasy, often making up stuff on the spot to justify their beliefs.

Drive through a housing edition on any weekend, and check out how much materialism is stuffed into their garage. We consume to appease our egos, egos that have tried so hard to provide them income. We are engines of commercialism that conflates life with the acquisition of possessions, which is not living.
