We are all after the same things in life: respect, love, and happiness. I believe in living a frugal, minimalist lifestyle because I think it allows me to achieve these things in my life. Being frugal allows me to have more control over my money while minimalism allows me to get the most out of everything I own. In our consumer driven society, most people live very materialistic lives constantly chasing possessions; however, I do not think that you can achieve respect, love, and happiness through materialism.
In this video, I encourage you to look elsewhere with "5 Reason Materialism Isn't The Answer."
1. The More You Pursue Happiness, The Further You Get Away From It
When you pursue a very materialistic life, you are really pursuing happiness. You are pursuing happiness through buying a bunch of material possessions hoping they will provide happiness in exchange; however, it normally does the opposite. The ironic thing about trying to pursue happiness is, "The more you pursue it, the further you get from it." Materialism isn't the answer to happiness because happiness is a by-product of something else.
2. Your Identity Consists Of Many Factors, Possessions Being Just One
Materialism is often about expressing yourself through your possessions. We often use possessions to construct our identity; however, the problem with this is that it puts too much focus on your external being. In addition to our possessions, our character, experiences, and knowledge create our identity. Materialism isn't the answer to identity because possessions are just one piece of who you are.
3. Self Worth Doesn’t Need To Be Proven
Although many people wouldn't admit it, materialism is all about impressing other people and trying to show that you have value. We buy nice clothes, cars, and houses thinking that it will make us have a higher self worth; however, your self worth is not your net worth. You were born worthy and do not need to prove yourself to anyone. Materialism isn't the answer because self worth doesn't need to be proven.
4. Freedom Means Less
Oftentimes, people seek a materialistic lifestyle thinking that it will provide freedom in their lives as they aren't limiting or depriving themselves of anything. It doesn't matter how rich or poor you are, materialism will find a way to trap you and limit what you can do in life because "The things you own end up owning you." Materialism isn't the answer because freedom is achieved through less.
5. Life Just Doesn’t Work In Extremes
We live in a world of extremes where we're either living in one extreme or the other. Materialism is one of the extremes because it puts so much emphasis on material possessions; however, you are not your things. Materialism isn't the answer to freedom because life is about a balance. Don't live in extremes and find the balance between the two.

Being creative with a purpose, using my “God-given” gift of improving as much as possible. I have what I need and I practice gratitude and humility. I find Happiness in being free and not encumbered buy a lot of stuff! My having less has led to my “wanting less” and what I do have, I thoroughly enjoy. I enjoy the money I save and the freedom it allows me. My motto is “Keep needs few and wants fewer.” On a side note, you have inspired me to learn Spanish. My goal is to be fluent by the end of 2023!

I work at a credit union and I see materialism play out all the time. People having $700 car payments, credit card debt like no other, no savings account. Most people are barely scraping by-but they have a nice truck 🤔 It’s really sad. I gave up materialism years ago and I’ve never been happier! I could care less what car I drive, what phone I have, etc. I enjoy peace and simple living. Great video!

I agree. It takes courage and immense patience to accept that there are things we can't change. Like we can't become rich overnight. I prefer to take the longer traditional route of building my finances gradually. Debt is a disease which a lot of times is used to purchase depreciating assets or things that cannot be used more than once.

OMG. Honest question. I have three cars that all run well. I paid less than $20K for all three. Do you think I over did it? I am completely debt free and paid cash for all of them. I understand that insurance cost and maintenance are a thing. However, two are in the "antique/classic" category, with low miles. I figure they are an investment because I can turn around and sell them if I want at a profit.

I'm 52 years old and have started my journey of getting away from consumerism. It's a very very hard habit to break!!! It's like breaking away from a drug addiction. I have to force myself to not go into my favorite store. I find myself browsing online and adding items to my cart. I've had to throw my phone down before hitting checkout. Here's what I've learned: after a few days I forget about or no longer want what was in the cart. It's crazy how our brains have been programmed. I see the Amazon trucks daily in my neighborhood (and, yes, it used to stop regularly at my house) and I see just how huge this problem is.

My roommate has asked me on multiple occasions about when I'm going to get a new/another car. Yesterday he brought it up again and said "you know how many nice 2000's BMWs I've seen on Facebook Marketplace for under $3k? You could get a nicer car for not a lot of money." I have a '94 BMW in pretty good condition that I've had since high school, and I'm genuinely happy with it and feel no need to replace it. Meanwhile my roommate said he's going to get a second car as soon as he finishes paying his current one off. I can't even imagine the maintenence and insurance expenses of two cars on top of a monthly car payment. 🤯

Modern society makes us believe that we have to be successful (lots of material things, rich, high status, powerful) in order to be successful. So many people work their butts off for 40 years in order to achieve that. That's why if you are not successful people go into depression. Why? It's totally unnecessary. We can be happy and free without a lot of stuff, wealth, status, or power. We just need to focus on our families, healthy, and some entertainment. That's it. That's enough for happiness.

I think an issue worth acknowledging is that, vis-a-via freedom, many people wouldn't know what to do with it if they had it. For many, being free to do whatever they want to is more of a challenge than not being free because they don't KNOW what to do with their time. I remember, years ago, having a co-worker who complained about her job incessantly -- she HATED it. And yet, she herself acknowledged that she didn't actually have to work: her husband made a good income and her kids were grown. But she liked to go shopping and if she didn't work, she wouldn't have her own money to shop. Plus (I believe) she enjoyed coming to work and complaining: it gave her something to focus her dissatisfaction with life on. This flabbergasted me at the time but I don't think it's that unusual. Freedom is great if you know that, say, you long to travel (and have the money, health, and independence to do so) or write a book or learn a new skill. But if you don't -- and I suspect the vast majority don't -- then freedom can be very "confronting" -- i.e., it forces you to question what your life is really about (or to acknowledge that most of your life may be behind you). It's much more comforting to go to the mall or eagerly anticipate the arrival of a boxful of stuff from Amazon or something you purchased on eBay. I've done it myself! It used to be a common thing that, shortly after retiring, many people (men mostly, since this was years ago, before most women worked) they died. They didn't know what to do with themselves, having become habituated to having their days structured by -- and their sense of self-worth provided by -- their jobs. It's easier to seek fulfillment through materialism because it DOES provide a short-term boost, and it's the lifestyle we've been steeped in our entire lives (at least in the USA). Even on RU-vid, there are countless channels devoted to things like collecting handbags, cars, clothes, watches, or buying real estate or choosing cosmetic surgery procedures, and so on.) In closing, I think a lot of people, even if they claim they want to be more free, actually find it easier to follow the herd. And I get it.

I read somewhere that material possessions give you only so many "joy points". The item soon becomes unimportant, forgotten and you lose the luster of what that thing gave you in the first place. Joy points are fleeting. Also, I find the more material possessions = depression. I see clutter as cluttering my mind, my emotions, my mental health. Finally, I feel with less = more spontaneity. The space around you and no materialism lends itself to you freeing up time to do the things that matter most. 😃

I need to be loved and cared for, I need time to pursue the things I find meaningful - like getting out into nature, eating home cooked nutritious meals, spending time with my family and friends etc. To me these things are priceless! For many (many) years I slaved to materialism because I wanted respect from my peers. As a gay man growing up in the 80s and 90s I felt the only way to feel respected by others was to drive a nice car and wear good clothes. Consequently I lived my first 45 yrs on credit, between overdraft and cards and consolidation loans. I would take the loan but not cut up the card..Spending would increase leaving me in a worse state. I was not a big earner but I played fake it till you make it for as long as I could. I finally realised one can’t buy respect from others. If someone is going to hate you, laugh at you, whatever, then that is what they are going to do irrespective of what car you drive. I realised that the way we carry ourselves in public, the sound of our voice, the projection of calm confidence and steady speech, strong eye contact, are what determines respect from others in the public realm.

Materialism is a wide catch word. People who are trying to make as much money as possible are not necessarily attracted to materialism. They could simply be trying to free themselves from daily labour, which would make most people happy, including the maker of this sophistry packed video. Many wealthy people are actually very cheap and but modest things. Materialism can make individuals unhappy if they buy something they cannot afford, such as a porch instead of a Ford Focus.. But this is less materialism and more overreaching that will cause them an unhappy state; when they must work overtime to make those car payments.

The thing I hate most about materialism is it's just more things to worry about and nobody gives you much credit for it anyways in the current culture. Back in the 50's if you bought a new car all the neighbors would be envious and come over to see it. People used to take more pride in things like that. Nowadays nobody really cares about the real world anyways... I could drive a brand new 50k Lexus for an entire year and get zero accolades for it (it's not like a cute girl's gonna start jumping up and down with amazement at the gas station lol). Would I enjoy driving it? Sure but I'd rather not make huge payments on an old car that costs less to insure and I don't need to worry about nearly as much.

Yes it was the neighbours envy back in the 50's that started the whole phenomenon of keeping up with the Jones's.

It’s hard to not buy stuff when so many hobbies involve material items. Just be careful to only buy the things that bring you value. For example making music requires equipment. Very few hobbies involve no material items these days. Maybe what bird watching? Even bird watching requires binoculars.

Materialism in moderation isn’t a bad thing. It’s when it turns into an over abundance of impulse purchases is where it becomes a huge issue. Don’t buy it unless you know for a fact you really really want it.

I'm not a spender but I'm not a cheap person neither. Luxury doesn't tells me anything. Being financial secured and becoming resourceful means a lot to me. I don't mind the Luxury but depending on what luxury really means to me. Cuz luxuries these days such as burgatti look so ugly plus top Gs car looks so ugly too which makes him a buttom G.

Not a fan of materialism but I know I want to save up for a new Toyota Tacoma. Though if I don’t have the money by the time my car goes out I’ll just buy a used truck or car. It just sucks that the prices have skyrocketed right now:/

The more I watch you, the more I can't help but think of you as a modern day Buddha. He was more extreme than you in his anti-materialism but your philosophies are very similar. I noticed that you never mention his name but I can tell you are very much aware of his existence. Anyway, keep it up young man - you are on the right path.

The Bible says only think of the things in heaven and not the things on earth. It says knowledge of this world is futile with God. That tells you everything you need to know. It says to be spiritually minded is peace. God only wants you to think of heaven and not the physical world at all. Knowledge of the physical world is pointless to God. In the words of the Bible, what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.

I found your videos a few days ago, they are very eye-opening! I want to persue a calm life, learn to not impulse-buy, and not be overwhelmed by the stuff I have, to know everything I have and where I have it. I understand the concept of capitalism and how we've been programmed, though I would go to the extreme of not allowing myself to buy anything, I haven't quite grasped the middle line and when I should allow myself to buy something that I want, but not need, or if it would be correct to even allow myself? I'm a bit confused there 😅 Anyone that's on this journey and could clarify that for me would be very appreciated! Keep the videos coming Agustin! Quiero seguir aprendiendo de ti!

You will never be happy by chasing happiness. It’s here, right now,no yesterday no tomorrow.Ps if you realise that 5000€ vw golf is as comfortable as brand new tesla etc then you will never be enslaved by corporate brainwashing of what actual happiness really is.

Another note: Materialism or consumerism is pan-political as well. I live in a socialist country (Canada) and many of the biggest materialist/consumers I know are hard-core Leftists. Usually women I've worked with and ex-GFs. They would spend at the stores what they have after paying tax. Unreal how much they consume. I would always balk but it was to no avail. And I'm the Conservative among all these free-spending socialists.
