Zod Joe should have asked more thought provoking questions regarding what the guy actually thinks consciousness is. The guy didn’t really go that deep on the possibilities. Consciousness is one of the most interesting philosophical subjects you can talk about. This moment was wasted. Joe could have got him thinking. The guy was just as clueless about consciousness as anyone else. LOL! It’s general Zod!
Ezeckel Reichert I think I watched 3 clips. When I saw the one on consciousness I watched it last and thought it would be insightful, but it wasn’t. My personal opinion is that science cannot touch or measure consciousness and that’s why the discussion was boring. Only philosophy and logic can touch upon what consciousness is. If I’m wrong I’ll be proven wrong in the future if science actually identifies what consciousness is. I just don’t think that will ever happen.

A lot of scientists are kind of taught not to say you don’t know, you are to make educated guesses half the time. I think a lot of them take that out with their education and think they can guess the answer to any question.
This guy is a genius !! He has made more contributions to physics than Stephen Hawkins. Nice to see a noble prize winner in physics explaining physics to Joe Rogan
@@organicfarm5524 I don't think Dr. Penrose was ever underrated. Maybe many people don't know about him beyond the scientific community. But within his community, he's definitely one of the greatest figures of the 20th century (at least).
@@innosanto If making contributions in singularity and black holes is the key for your argument, I believe that you will find fascinating that Dr. Penrose won the Noble price in physics for the discovery that black hole formation is a robust prediction of the general theory of relativity, While Einstein's general theory of relativity predicts the existence of black holes, Einstein didn't himself believe they really existed. Hawking singularity theorem is based on Penrose singularity theorem.
Roger Penrose's doubt and willingness to say he doesn't know the answer with certainty is so reassuring. The bullshit level with him is close to zero, and thats SO rare.
@@emmanuelkant9579 Science makes you realize very quickly that we have to be very careful about what we claim to really know, and what we actually just intuit, understand vaguely or flat out think of incorrectly. Any good scientist knows their job isn't describing reality, but making predictions about it.

One thing that makes Rogan an innovative interviewer is his ability to let his guest speak uninterrupted for over ten minutes without getting anxious himself. Seriously great.
He's very socially intelligent. He can tell whether or not the person would want to just speak without input. On top of that, he can read whether or not WE would want that. His older interviews from 2013-2014ish, he did cut people off, but he's mastered his craft now.
The fact that someone who took lectures from Dirac is able to do interviews on Rogan is mindblowing. I use the dirac delta function almost every day in my course work as an engineer. Dirac is one of the most important physicists of all time.
This brilliant man is consciously reducing the complexity level of his points to the level that engages the audience from start till the end. Fantastic Interview indeed.
True, but I think being the mathematician that he is, these lectures are like attending an extremely memorable stage play. Science and math is his passion, so any memories/information related to that will be easily recalled.

I love and respect Joe Rogan to the nth degree. He is by far the best interviewer I’ve ever watched. Especially if it is a topic he is genuinely interested in. Joe didn’t speak for a full 15 minutes, and understands enough to ask appropriate questions. I’m also imagining Joe asking the Professor wants “shrooms” to explore this further.

Just for the record this is as close as you’re going to get to an interview with Einstein. Penrose is a HUGE name in math and physics. This is like bringing Grothendieck or Hilbert on the show.
Theres a difference between trying to act smart like some of the guest and actually being smart. This guy was very interesting. I'd watch if u had him back.
This man is the most well-spoken, articulate person I have ever listened to. His understanding of how to frame complex ideas and build understanding from scratch is unprecedented
Why is Penrose's name not in the title? Seems a bit like having Stephen Hawking on the show and just calling it Physicist Explains Black Holes. Surely more people are going to click if they see that kind of name.
I think it’s kind of poetic that he just considers them how they are: scientists/mathematicians-as if they all have equal potential to make meaningful contributions to society.
This is so good I would pay 100 dollars for it. Joe's interviewing skills shine so bright here. His genuine interest in everything really fuels the dialogue...

According to Wiki, he's from the 18th century, after making many correct calculations, he's lived a multidimensional meaningful life, spending much of it in the future-to-date. You can tell he has because of all the knowledge he brings plus the truth, logic and common sense in his accent.
I studied quantum physics at Cambridge University and I remember when hearing about quantum entanglement and also particles acting differently when being observed for the first time it blew my mind at what goes on at the quantum level. And even to this day quantum physics can always end up mesmerising me
I always thought that quantum particles acted differently when being observed because the very act of "observing" modifies the system, like shooting a light wave in the system and wait for the light to come back to know what is going on there, by the time the light is back the system was modified by said light.
This is one of the better and well done Joe Rogan podcast interviews. Always been intrigued by ‘consciousness’ and how it fits in terms of existentialism. No MD’s in psychiatry can actually define or say. Yet, the common man will tell you that there is a connection between consciousness and the soul. Lot’s of luck getting a scientific explanation on that!
The soul could be completely explained scientifically.. like he explains in this interview, that understanding of what consciousness is, is beyond the scope of current mathematical, macro or quantum physics and it needs more research. Don't be ignorant
Even in the show breaking bad Walt and his Colleague could get it down to a mathematical number but could not say exactly what it was. If Hollywood looks at it that way I doubt mainstream science sees it no different.
Either consciousness is a decidable or consciousness is undecidable. If consciousness is decidable there is an algorithm for it. If consciousness is undecidable then we can never know if we are actually conscious.
@@memegazer i like this comment... but hypothetically, we could learn everything there is to know about consciousness & still not be able to generate or manufacture it. One can imagine a few scenarios in which that might be the case (many of which don't rely on the presence of gods/spirits/the supernatural)
@@ts4gv That depends on what is meant by the term consciousness. Indeed it is easy to imagine a case where thinking machines would never be classified as consciousness...but that does not change the fact that we are still left with only two options. Either consciousness is computable...in which case there is an algorithm for it. Or we define consciousness as not computable...which will mean we will never be able to define and quantify the difference between biological intelligence and machine intelligence. It is really just a matter of preference.
@@memegazer One can imagine scenarios in which we could understand everything there is to know about consciousness, know that it cannot be generated from an algorithm on any machine, never have the tools to generate it ourselves (other than advanced cloning), and to be able to fully classify machine intelligence from biological intelligence. Think along the lines of “consciousness juice” in the brain, or weird quantum level stuff-anything in which physical reality is essential to generating consciousness. Unlikely, but a fun thought experiment. That’s my only point.

Joe you gotta interview him again! You must hear him talk about his model of Conformal Cyclic Cosmology, which claims there is evidence of supermassive black hole collisions in the cosmic microwave background radiation in the form of concentric circles from a previous universe. The theory says the absolute end of the universe (all black holes evaporate and nothing of mass exists) is conformally identical to the big bang. So the entire known cosmos from big bang to end is nothing but a series of infinite universes occurring one after another. Super interesting and IT MAKES SENSE!
John Demchuk Basically, but I also feel like he touches up on the programming/philosophy aspect of decision making skills and processing evolution of the human brain and how adapting it to systems seems hard AF because programs are usually back and forth based on a pre-determined function/algorithm. This is such a great example of when someone is very smart and has a lot of experience with a subject that there is a lot doubt in truly knowing something and there is humility and integrity in saying he’s not sure.
It’s amazing how many people think Joe is a big moron. In every interview I’ve seen, regardless of how big the genius, he seems to be able to wrap his mind around the concepts the guest talks about. He may ask a lot of questions and use stupid analogies, but he’s not dumb. He’s also not dumb just because he’s done drugs or smokes pot. His vocabulary is somewhat limited but he explains his own views and asks questions well. And is ALWAYS GENUINELY interested in what the guest has to say. He’s not dumb; quite the contrary.
Joe is definitely super smart, normally and socially. Feminists and people like that call joe dumb and stuff for saying things like - men who turn into girls shouldn’t be allowed in women’s sport.
Joe is far from dumb, he may not know the actual names of concepts or equation because he is not a specialist in that field but he understands the concept quite well and summarize them into ways we all can understand. People who think that he is dumb are probably the dumb ones 😂

Watch Dr. Stuart Hameroffs video on quantum consciousness. My belief is that this is why we experience time in the form of a line and not in the 5th dimension which is how it should behave if we lived in the quantum world
Very interesting theory. It does sound very reasonable to think micro tubules play a role in consciousness given that they allow the cell to restructure itself, move key molecules within itself, and even move around in its environment. It would be very interesting to see whether the actions of a micro tubule (the way it grows and restructures itself) are a consequence of some underlying consciousness software program of the cell or whether its actions are driven completely by physical laws and through that consciousness arises.
I would imagine it's a software program derived/evolved from physical law. Within the confines. Is there something we are missing or I am missing. I can't see how there's an outside or radical cause we can't or don't understand.

Joe Rogan probably has the best recommendations on RU-vid. He's interviewed a wide spectrum of different people. Had to have some minor knowledge about at least one or two.
I think the answer on consciousness should be searched via meditation and relaxation. I once was relaxed so much that all i was left was a tiny spot of consciousness somewhere inside my brain. If you go that far weird stuff can happen.i had an out of body experience, probably stepped into another layer of this reality. My consciousness 100% for sure didnt fall asleep. Opened my "eyes", somebody was already waiting for me, i was brought somewhere, was tested to see how i could hold myself when bombarded telephatically i think. Things work different there, more instantaneous, i failed and was brought back. When i opened my eyes in this reality, i felt i hadnt slept, that this did happen and i was mentally soo drained i just broke down.. It was the toughest experience i ever had. We need to explore that place/state of being. I feel its important.

@Hank do you believe where you go when you dream is real? I think it's good to know that when dreaming, one's brain releases a few different chemicals to keep the body from moving and also to numb the mind so it can re-energize during sleep. I think when meditating, one isn't flooded with those chemicals and has a much clearer and imaginative view on their dream state, during the meditation. My point being that the clarity of meditative dreams might be so convincingly real feeling that it can be overwhelming. Compared to your sleepy drugged up dream state in sleep. Bare in mind; I am a Christian, 7th day Adventist, so I believe consciousness to be extremely complex and completely reliant on the soul. I mean the visions that people speak of in the Bible are extremely representative of some meditative experiences. Anyways, I hope that my words can help you with some new interpretation of what is maybe happening- or that I can invoke a new idea in your head that may lead you to a satisfactory conclusion 😊
Keep trying! Never stop trying! One day you’ll make it to the other side and be able to stay there for good! I’ve had very many similar experiences but not quite that far deep. 😊
Jaw dropped. I've experienced something eerily similar at a young age. If this is real, if you are still there, reply to me. If I could compare your experience with mine I might get closer to understanding just what it was.
What I got from this is basically Microtubials are responsible for consciousness, but we can never recreate consciousness with mathematics and we lack much of an understanding of what consciousness actually is, but we see Fibonacci sequences in the Microtubials which we think has something to do with where our conscious experience originates

Joe is awesome, he lets his guests actually talk and he is genuinely interested in what his guests have to say. He often gives his most intelligent guests new ways of thinking.
The depth of thought in this mans amazing brain... is Astonishing!!. Sir Roger Penrose. Sometimes you need to make a short story long. His level of consciousness is off the scale. ✊
It's amazing to see someone this old who has dedicated their life to an understanding for the greater society. Edit: I think my liver is conscious on some small level. It has handled a lot.
Still watching this and sometimes I think he's lost the original question in his explanations but he always brings it back. Sharp mind. Am half his age and his is far sharper than mine will ever be.
I feel like he'd be such a good person to take lectures from because he explains everything in a way you can understand and clearly instead of trying to sound like the smartest and be the smartest especially when he acknowledges alot of other people's theory's that could all play a role in understanding conciousness
"The rules are true because one believes they are true." I've always had this thought and feeling but never explored it because I just wanted to pass my math classes.
Well the rules (of mathematics, simplified) also haven't let us down ever since the greeks were doing math with only circles and lines, no numbers or anything else really.
