For thousands of years the swastika was originally a sacred symbol in Hinduism, Jainism, and Buddism. Then 1930's came around and a crazy group of people used a superimposed image of that symbol for their hateful ideology, and even though its been almost a century since that time and even though the group that came later was really small compared to the number of Jains, Buddhists, and Hindus around the world everyone now a days in the West knows better than to use even the original symbol because its associated with bad things and bad people. It's the same thing with Pepe except in modern times now. I won't claim to know when the Pepe meme was born, but I'll assume it was used for a while but a wide range of people for no purpose other than humor. Then some people online with extreme views (who ironically enough are inspired by Nazi ideals if not outright Nazism) get a hold of the Pepe meme and start using it to insidiously inject their beliefs into forums or using it as a tag on forums for other extremists to congregate, all under the guise of a meme. It's unfortunate that Pepe has become associated with such a hateful ideology, but there's an easy solution if you don't appreciate being called a Nazi, don't use Nazi call signs. There are literally millions of memes online, I'm sure you can find a replacement for next time you want to be a cheeky bastard.

Pepe has been used as an white nationalist symbol for like 1 and a half years now. Pepe was used in jokes prior but once something becomes used as a symbol for hate then it's an issue . First time I came across Pepe was when I watched a RU-vid video about a League of Legend player named Imaqtpie. His editor used Pepe's image along with the quote "feels bad man" whenever Qtpie would died in the game.
