Went to Cancun and the second we step off the plane and in front of the airport, the first thing we saw were armord vehicles and soldiers. Then when we got on the bus and drove to the resort, the highway we took, which is literally a swathe cut through the jungle, is lined every halfmile with 2 military watchtowers and 2 snipers at each tower. We drove like 5 miles and we had to have seen like a couple dozen sniper nests. Once you finally get to the resort, you have to go through 3 layers of fencing and checkpoints, each with again, more soldiers and armored vehicle's. Outside the resort was a few desolate towns but you can tell the money is not being divied out. Ill tell ya, ive never felt more safe but also concered considering the extent they were going through to make sure their tourism was protected.

I grew up in the Muslim autonomous region of the Philippines with an American ex-military father. There was a huge house we called the "guest house" in the capitol on the mainland that we used to sometimes visit for a few weeks at a time. It was called a "house" but it was more like a complex - I remember there were offices in the basement, a live-in housekeeping staff, and an entire playground on a outdoor balcony. Alot of other Americans living throughout the country would also occasionally stay there too. The house itself had 10 foot walls and was on top of a huge hill, and was inside a gated community (armed guard at the neighborhood gate). As a kid I thought it was just a cool place to get to watch Cartoon Network and play with other American kids. I found out from my parents as an adult that it was actually a safe house for foreign nationals and was geographically inside of a 3-point triangle of the US Embassy, a US military base, and the airport. We left PH and moved back to the US very suddenly, and I also wasnt told until I was an adult that the US state department had ordered the evacuation of all Americans in the Muslim autonomous region due to increased violence. This was a year before 9-11. So yeah...........Americans really have no idea how much they're protected in dangerous countries.

It’s probably safer in Mexico now that the deadly gangs are busy trafficking people and stuff around the United States border daily. 🤦🏽‍♀️ Considered the modern form of slavery, human trafficking has become one of the world’s most lucrative businesses, bringing in an estimated $150 billion annually for evil predators. Current events and history are hidden from people. It wasn’t the Republicans 160 years ago and it isn’t the Republicans now keeping this used human stuff. There is such evil going on in the world, but fools Think they are on the side of kind if they shove an arrogant yard sign in their yard that shows their own detachment from reality and ability to be manipulated it is so sad and I don’t blame the voters, they are woke victims like I used to be needing to wake up.

For the ones saying this happens in DR. It’s a lie. We do have gangs, but never cartels at the level that Mexico does. Tourists leave resorts all the time and go to the countryside and stay in small towns. I’ve even seen them camping in the middle of nowhere and be safe. No, it's the military. It's very well known that they do this. Tourism is the largest economy in Mexico and they invest a TON of money into making sure that foreigners are protected, even from local police, because if it is seen as being unsafe even at resorts tourism will dwindle, and the entire economy will suffer drastically. I worked for Wyndham Hotels years ago, and traveled all over the world to conferences and met with the general managers of many of the most expensive luxury resorts in Mexico, and this was discussed all the time. Also, Joe mentions that this happened in Punta Mita, which is where the most expensive, most high-end luxury resorts in Mexico are. It's where many celebrities vacation when there, including Kim Kardashian, so they always have extremely valuable "assets" staying there to ensure the safety of.

There's no doubt there are dangers living here, but mostly just rampant thievery. If you value it, don't bring it to Mexico. If you want to be safe here, wear modest clothes, modest jewelry, drive a modest vehicle, don't get drunk in public. Don't go to massive of tourist towns where the criminal element gathers to prey on you. Greet everyone, especially the humblest, and speak to them like a human being. @bigd1223 Cartels are like the Italian mob, buy businesses to fuel their wealth, they're not really there to protect the people but protecting their assets. In Joe's case that might be government don't know, but it wouldn't surprise me if it was cartel, the cartels in Mexico could easily take Mexico with armored trucks but it's not in their best interest.

@@bigd1223 Rival cartels. Tourism is a big money income for them and it's legal. You will be protected there, if not by the military, then by the cartel.

This is so common in developing countries, back when I lived in Delhi even middle class apartments had armed private security.

@sujiese6355 but there are armed guards, most societies have a person with a shotgun, broken glass on the walls and security cameras. At least that was the case when I left Noida in 2009, we even had breakins with armed security and we even had a murder in our society plus a suicide.

When my husband and I went to India, our personal guide told us not to leave the Resort at night bc it's dangerous for tourists. We decided to go out at night anyway and immediately regretted it. We had in a very short time a crowd of people start following us harassing us. The gate keeper at the resort saw us running back and immediately came to our rescue. Tourists aren't always welcome in some places.

It is similar in Cancun (Yacatan) also. If you leave the main resort strip you will see a heavy military presence with military tanks, armored trucks.

I travelled to Mexico 10 years ago with my Young family and stayed in Sayultia next to Ponta Mita.…. The people were lovely and never felt threatened once and even our surfboards that we left unattended in the garden which led onto the beach did not get stolin. I found the place to be much safer than most countries I’ve been too

Back in 2019 I shattered my kneecap right before my trip to Cabo San Lucas so when I went down I was on crutches. The amount of federales that would stop traffic to let me cross the road, held doors open for me, and cleared a path for me when it was busy was amazing. They are some amazing people
