I graduated high school in 1993. The music of the 90s was amazing, as was life. If I could go back in time. I didn't appreciate the 90s like I should have.
Agreed, met her in 2017 at a book signing. A total joy to talk to even if it was just for a few minutes. Rest of the band was there too and they were just as nice.
What’s smart about poisoning yourself? Than they lock up the dealers and the addicted still doesn’t stop, what’s smart about being surrounded by people whacked out because they can’t deal with life normally, I’ve never done drugs and I bust my ass while people who don’t work hard in the physical sense make millions
I had tickets to see Garbage in New Orleans 15 years ago and couldn't go. During "Only Happy When it Rains" it started pouring rain at an outside venue and the band finished the set. I missed it and have friends that still talk about it.
Shirley Manson is like the Queen of Portland, and she probably doesn't even know it. On the first day of rain in autumn, 'Only Happy When It Rains' is ALWAYS played on Portland radio stations. So the first day for... what we're mostly know for... and she sings the anthem for it, lol.
That's sweet. When this person from, originally, across the world is playing a cultural part of an entire city, but in a very humble way...it's just really sweet
By the time she took lead vocal and got MTV play the band was called Angelfish. That's the band that Butch Vig saw. Coincidentally, I only ever saw their video once on 120 Minutes and I remember it distinctly because when I saw it the first thing I thought was, "Holy Shit: that singer is incredible."
@@markheywood5626 I thought it was Steve Marker that saw her on MTV LATE NIGHT….but I could be wrong. Doesn’t matter, bottom line, we are so lucky to have it happen.
Dig Joe warring a Thomas Hitman Hearns shirt, being from Detroit and friends with Tommy its good to see people still know Tommy was a bad ass fighter/Boxer.
She so amazing she best love her still from age 12 to now 36 I am still a fan of hers. She is getting older but wiser and they are still make cool music these days!!!
I remember seeing Angelfish on MTV and being really taken with Shirley Manson. It was really delightful to see her pop up with Garbage shortly thereafter.
Money itself, don't do shit for ya... GETTING THE MONEY is kind of a Rush.... but spending it on a GOOD TIME is what money is all about... also investing for your future..... but when you are young and you got $$$ you will most likely end up misappropriating some of that money on flashy shit.. and DRUGS.. i've been there.. it's fun as long as you don't go overboard and know you still have more money coming your way than it's all gucci.
Yeah but in 1992 when this happened speed was wayyy more expensive. So £100000 would be around 7000 pills of speed which is still insane but I imagine a lot of the money went towards the alcohol and just going out and partying
Just come from her other video about how the music industry screws artists over... I really like her point... but then I find out she spends £100,000 on drugs.... hmmmm.
yeah and how she glossed over the figure like is meant nothing! It's fucking beyond me...I could make that kind of money last for ten years. Seriously! MAYBE EVEN LONGER. It's not hard. Don't be a hedonist fuckhead. People sure love to make it hard, though.
You're right, Steve. Money doesn't mean anything when it's created out of nothing. In fact, that might be part of the problem. Know what I mean? What's $20 trillion, ya know?? Just numbers...yeah...
She said she and her Angelfish bandmates "together" spent all of that £100,000 record advance on partying. So £25,000 per member. If they stayed in nice hotels, that in itself takes up a good chunk of money, especially if they splurged on room service. In rock & roll terms, what they spent isn't excessive. If she alone was spending that much on drugs, it would show and I doubt she would have been asked to front Garbage or even allowed an audition.
100,000 pounds on Drugs? That's 119,000 dollars. Holy Shit. That's a lot of money. We're talking the kind of money seniors pay for THEIR drugs. Wow. REALLY puts things into perspective, huh?
Actually it’s around $330000 😬. £100000 back then was $160000… now adjust for inflation… this is how much lol. Speed was much more expensive back then though
Wow, as her follower on social media, I'm amazed that Shirley still has all her marbles. Also, I wonder if her sobering up throughout the years (I'm assuming) reflects how 'Bleed Like Me' was their last amazing album.
Ehhhh idk know about 200k with some partying cocaine maybe some ladies some painkillers Hotel expenses I'd say maybe 30/40 Grand tops $20,000 still buys you quite a bit of drugs for the weeked
Pesare Irani ex was really expensive in the late 80's early 90's, people used to pay £10-20 in the UK, a lot more than when I could get them between 2005-10 for £2 each or 20 for £20. Not sure about speed, think or cost around £5 a gram in 2005.
GOOD top shelf ecstasy is fucking expensive..... only the mediocre or bunk ecstasy is cheap.... speed is cheap yeah but you can run through it FAST, especially with 5 people sharing a bag.
As a drug user, that 100k on speed n E, in that timeframe is fucking bullshit...mind you i wouldn't mind doing speed n E with shirley...we'd still be knocking boots now...
I've never heard her being interviewed and I thought she would be irratating like a lot of succesful Scottish women are e.g. Annie Lennox. I think she's cool as fuck now!
I partied with a Scottish girl, all night. She was THE hottest in zelos bar in S.B. I could barely understand her because even though she was speaking English, she would mix in Scott slang.
It's actually much more than that. She's describing the drug spending as the catalyst for the formation of Angelfish, which happened in 1992. Adjusted for inflation, it's actually over $250,000 in today's money.
128k in todays money maybe but back then it was closer to $230000 dollery-doos. the value of the pound has really dropped a lot over the past 20 years particularly after brexit.
So...she doesn't at all explain how her drug binge changed her career, she just says "by going off I ended up becoming the singer of Garbage because they saw my band's video on MTV" -what?
VicInNocal they spent the whole advance on come so she ended up sticking with her old band long enough to get a video played on tv. After that is when they asked her to sing for Garbage.
She was in a band called Goodbye Mr Mackenzie, which blew all their money on drugs in 1992. The record label dropped the band but they believed in Shirley so they kept her. So, to circumvent this Shirley formed a new band called Angelfish, with her as the lead singer, and the rest of her original band mates behind her (also only Shirley appears on the album artwork / promotional artwork). They made a music video for a song called ‘Suffocate Me’ which played once on MTV’s 120 minutes. Steve Marker from Garbage always taped MTV and saw Angelfish’s video when looking back over the tape, he liked the song, and Garbage were looking for a female lead. So, they tracked her down and hired her.
I've yet to meet ONE interesting druggie in my life. The same with people who think they're so cool and unique because they get tattoos -it is actually the most UNORIGINAL thing there is. It's like they're 35 year olds who are still stuck in high school. Sorry if this dose of truth hurts your feelings Pumpkin.
VicInNocal I got a dose of opinions. Not truths. And i don't agree. Have you ever taken drugs? And maybe people get tattoos because THEY think it would look nice...?
just because you cant hang, doesnt mean you should get your panties in a bunch... its all your opinion, i think someone like jimi hendrix or the entirety of led zeppelin were pretty damn interesting and would have stories about going to the bathroom that would exceed your entire life. arent you just mad that you arent cool or unique?
This woman had me cancelled from my job, losing me my entire career in the music industry, because I rejected booking some terrible and woke BLM pushing band that was her tour support, she implied I was a racist. I am half black. She doxxed me publicly. She caused me so much pain and suffering, I had a mental breakdown over it and being a working class person I couldn’t afford to legally challenge her. But I’ve decided I’m going to sue her for defamation now. Thanks to Mr Depp I feel inspired to clear my name.
@@Tammy8823 couldn’t afford lawyers, so no, and I’ve considered still doing it now but again it’s a money issue and also I can’t be bothered with more drama as I’ve moved on now. I don’t want to deal with all the online abuse again really.
Please feel sorry to Shirley Manson , the oppressed and victimized artiste even though she's worth 15 million! Who fucking pays for a Garbage album anyway these days?
