My sister and I seen Garbage in Princes Street Gardens in Edinburgh at the celebrations for the opening of the Scottish Parliament in 1999. Version 2.0 had recently been released, my sister was 14, I was 16. It was her first gig, my second gig (1st being Ocean Colour Scene, Stirling Castle 1998) . We got the train to Edinburgh, managed to get served beer at Pizza Hut.... then watched Garbage play a set with the best from the debut album and v2.0. Was gutted that we had to leave shortly before the end of the set (thank you ScotRail timetable circa 1999). One of my favourite memories of all time. 😀☺

Great interview by Shad. It's not often enough an interviewer poses consistently probing and interesting questions AND gives the interviewee a chance to respond adequately. This was like a relaxed and comfortable discussion for once.
@aerialkate
@aerialkate 8 лет назад
+Matthew Leese I agree, this fella is refreshing. These days, all too often we see the guests perpetually looking skywards, or they talk too quickly cos they can sense they're going to be interrupted by their interrogator. Sometimes it's caused by rampant egomania on the part of the interviewer, who doesn't get that he's not the star of the show. Sometimes they're so desperate for the guest to like them that they anticipate responses and end up answering the bloody question for the guest themselves. Interviewing people seems to be a dying art.

Man I was obsessed with Shirley Manson when I was around 18-20. Bought like Kerrang magazines, cut out and plastered her face all over my walls (along with that other Manson popular at the time). Really liked their first record and have a lot of memories linked to the songs on that one, all the things that happends growing up, having your first serious relationship and all that. I would very likely be one of the ones crying in the audience when they play old songs if I attended. Also, I always thought of Garbage as in part Butch Vigs music production experiment vehicle and the things Shirley says in this interview kind of confirmed that. I have since gone on to trying to make a career as a producer myself. Having the right sound is immensely important. And they really did in 95.

Me too! I had the posters, magazines & all the singles! (Remember those)? I bought their first album in Spring of 96 the last day of school. I played that album all summer everywhere I went. I had my first job and serious boyfriend too, us laying on my roof on those long summer nights blasting out of my boombox, making out. I can put that album on now and flashback to being a teenager and not having the world on my shoulders.

Very good interview. I like the fact that the gentleman didn't over ride her at all. Yep, I like this gentleman as well. He is almost like a theropist in a way. I usually don't like some interviews with musicians, singers at times because the questions can stir awkwardness. One time some lady interviewed Kurt Kobain, and she did O. K. in some areas, and Kurt was passive as usual, but then she asked some questions in assumptions about his attitude and it kinda made him frustrated and me too. I ended up not liking her in the end. But anyway, I wish there were more nice interviews like this man. Shirley seems to be a nice sweetheart.

Shirely talks about failures being pivotal in your ability to grow as a musician and move on from that. I am not going to let my failures on the drum kit set me back. So i cant figure out a certain beat right away. What i ususally do is try a few more times to get the physical motions in and do it slowly, then just sleep on it. Most days when i fail to grasp something i sleep on it and the very next day my body can do it slightly better or i grasp it right away. Sleep and time away from the kit does wonders. Proud to be one of the 4 million that bought their debut album in 1995. Long live Garbage!
