Joe has had the privileges of speaking face to face with some of the most influential, inspirational, intelligent, creative, and overall badass people in our time. Man, what a ride he’s had.
Hes a great writer. I really wish I knew what made them need to be banned. I wouldn't say I get 'stimulated' reading his books but once I start one its very hard to put down.
APE MAN I own ‘Naked Lunch’ it’s hard to comprehend and therefore a struggle to get through. I have read ‘Junky’ by William S Burroughs which is much easier and own his novel ‘Queer’ as well.
One of the funniest jokes I heard was Joann Rivers about her husband who committed suicide. It was a real life situation with her daughter at a restaurant. Her daughter had basically withdrawn and wouldn’t speak to anybody including her mum. They were out at a restaurant and they were looking at the menu, and nobody was saying anything, then Joann said’ it’s good job daddy ain’t here, otherwise with these prices he’d kill himself all over again. And they both hysterically laughed. She then started telling that joke on stage. Brilliant.
Benjamin Jenssen what do you look like? She’s not ugly. You are just a piece of shit, so the steaming stench coming off you, you may mistaken as someone else’s stench.
The disassociation he describes in the story about the kid being autopsied is part of what people in that profession have to be able to do in order to survive. Humans, at least some of us, have a fascinating ability to compartmentalize.
Almost seems like compensating for an insecurity. I think I could just do the job without any mental disturbance or comment or emotional disturbance, from what I know of myself. But then again I haven't been there on a daily basis.
@@mikuspalmis whatever it is, its being able to do it that count imo. On one of his talk, jordan peterson was talking about how human are creative about hurting people because they know what would hurt them. I forgot the complete context, but at some point he was saying that(paraphrasing) how some people will say that they dont have it in them to hurt others horribly or that you have to be insane to do it, when actually its not, there is only a few mental acrobatics you need to go through to reach that point. Which shows that, no matter the action, you can actually rationalise the idea behind it, and its easier than you think
You nailed this perfectly. I work in the operating room and see things daily that would make other people throw up. How do we do it? We have to compartmentalize.
Jre isnt the worlds biggest podcast. I think it should be and most people who listen to the politically orientated “top” podcasts are sad people who are dead inside, but irreguardless its not the biggest. Sheesh, apparently i have to say this is a joke, relax ppl
He's truly correct. His form of literature is restricted in prison. I've had literature from Robert Greene and Sun Tzu confiscated but they allowed books that portrayed drugs, prostitution, violence as apart of an acceptable culture, to be read and ordered into the prison.
@@TheDirector_ of course. And pray and control and creating the biggest divide possible between the have and the have nots, the gap keeps getting wider and wider.... It's all that matters throughout this whole stupid world. It's why I give up..... I'm a loving caring person but the world has beaten me down so bad
All the men disturbed that he described the dead boy’s body as perfect (to mean undamaged) is a little suspect... my mind didn’t even think of it as sexual.. y’all projecting much?
I no exactly what he meant brother just like he didn't look as if he should be dead he was perfect and unscathed doesn't mean he likes naked boys people are just fucked up as u say nothing we can do about that brother 🙏
No its just most people don't hear the word "perfect" used in that context. Like you'd say the woman you married is perfect, thanks for making that more clear.
Chuck Palahniuk's nightmares must be interesting, a buddy of mine works as a mortician and he tells me his nightmares are super bizarre, like he once told me he dreamt himself walking a path where he knew he would be killed at the end destination but he couldn't stop himself from getting there because there was nowhere else to go, but he wasn't even scared, in the dream he was all meh about it, it's not until he woke up that he got scared, like, he has seen so many dead bodies and so much fucked up shit his subconscious doesn't even bother with being symbolic anymore.
Uh.... that seems like a pretty symbolic dream, the path being life itself, you can not do anything but progress down the path and death is the end of it.
The people that are looking at the girl in the wheelchair are not concerned at whatsoever about the girl in the wheelchair, it's much more selfish than that. They're concerned about what everybody else would think about them if they laughed at the joke. It's about how they can say that they're morally Superior to someone that did laugh.
I'm pretty sure by perfect he means unharmed as in it was a trauma that left no Mark's on the child, and his body was left perfectly healthy despite a head injury killing him
Pretty sure he means perfect as in wasnt damaged by the accident. Also you can tell hes told this story before, when hes responding to Joe after he asks a question, hes slightly less composed in the way he speaks. His use of the word perfect is probably to illustrate the idea of a wholesome and pure child, which makes the listener feel even worse when he describes the act of peeling the face off of the child in the autopsy.
He’s a writer, he’s describing the scene of the dead boy in the room as an aesthetic phenomenon; if you develop fucked up thoughts from it that’s on you, a writers job is to paint a scene for us and as far as I’m concerned he did it really elegantly. As someone in the comments said, the world is fucked up, not the lens
4:31 I was just drawing until I hear that and immediatly stopped what I was doing; not by frustration, not by grief, but just freezing... and that's why I love that story. It's so goddamned powerful!
I have a few thoughts here. First, to the people criticizing the content of his writing, that’s ridiculous to me. People who write for shows like CSI, Law & Order, X-Files etc. write scripts like this with the same type of content and people eat it like candy. What’s the difference? Also in regard to him describing the boy as “perfect,” I didn’t interpret it as perverted. By “perfect” I thought he meant undamaged because he had only hit his head and their was no visible wounds which makes it surreal. Funny how other people read into things so differently. Just my thoughts. He’s a great author and keeps it real. Loved that he referenced Tropic Of Cancer- same wavelength.
When I was in college,pre-med,UofA (Bear Down Cats) we went to go watch a autopsy. The corpse was laying on the stainless steel table and suddenly it raised its body up from his waist about 25-30 degrees and let out a huge burp. Man people flipped the fuck out. 2 chicks fainted,I mean turned white after screaming and were out. Dudes next to them caught them and they came to pretty quickly but wanted out of there. The corpse also farted and that was the worst thing I have ever smelled in my life. They later told us that this happens more than you think. Gases built up and they get released. I will never forget that for as long as I live.
What makes really great comedy is the raw, naked, visceral TRUTH of life. Laughing at reality is the most healthy way do deal with the dark, oppressive realities of every day life. Things that everyone (whether they admit it out loud) has experienced. It's a release. A way to realize, "hey, I'm not the only one", and to let it go...
First time hearing Palahniuk talk about stories he's been told? You think that one's bad, try Guts; several people outright fainted hearing it being spoken live.
My father was a practicing pathologist. My aunt wanted to see an autopsy. According to her, he was talking about real estate the whole time. Handling and weighting the deceased body parts.
Chuck is great by himself but him and Joe together are perfect! Can't believe I missed that they had a podcast but at least I have a good excuse considering the day it aired.
@4:31 I am so dark humored, I genuinely laughed when I heard it. Anything can be funny, it’s just a matter of delivery and perspective. The perfect shade of red.
Whoopi story is interesting. I guess she's talking about our capability to experience/commit/witness horrible disgusting acts if doing so allows us to maintain our own comfort. Pretty fuckin gnarly
Not just campuses ( campi?) . It's the world in general. Too many people have unbelievably thin skins, and have to be offended about something. It's the only thing that gives their lives any meaning.
@@jefftappan381 I agree, Jeff, and I think "campae" ("camp-eye") would be correct--but I'm not a Latin scholar. (Any Latin scholars out there who can help?) Seems like the majority have lost their sense of humor.
Chuck Palahniuk is an amazing author with such and incredible and imaginitive writer. Director David Fincher was so prescient to pick up Fight Club. Even the stories Chuck tells here in the interview are astonishing, horrific. Wow.
What the fuck does your first sentence mean? You say the same thing twice. To follow that up using prescient like you’re some academic writing a review is fucking hilarious e
@@bullets1085 hahaha, i was and am still calm. But I doubt you also think it's right to judge someone by the way they sit. More over that's a laid back talk show, it's not a presidential debate. It's not fair🙂
MrKillingvenom - im a paramedic and we do it too.. its kind of a way of dealing with the stress of the job... like if you took everything too seriously you'd be a wreck as you see such awful tragic things sometimes.
@@southmountain8878 it comes out of nowhere, it's struck my funny bone. Not because I need help, but such a serious scene was painted and then this casual comment is made for the punch line. Fkn hilarious
I read several of his books while incarcerated. The libraries won’t carry them but you can order them from an approved vendor. He’s a good writer to pass the time with. I traded his books throughout the block.
@@robotrobot4430 each one is its own delight...rant, choke,...all of them really. They will put you in a forced perspective of uncomfortable self awareness.
I picked up one of his books (Diary) at a library sale (fill a bag with books for 3 bucks). I was 20 pages into it when I realized it was about a guy who slowly tortures his wife to death. Really sick stuff. I threw the book away.
one of my favorite authors. i live in PA and i know the book Snuff wasnt allowed in certain jails....im an avid JRE listener and never thought about Chuck being on. good choice Joe!!! for those of you that like his stories i recommend reading his non fiction work Stranger than Fiction...
My Welsh Grandfather when I had returned to Wales for the first time since we emigrated to Canada some 14 years or so prior. He could see I liked making fun of things and joked a lot ...he said ...Donald, remember this ...it's only a joke if everyone's laughing...om almost 70 now and I've tried to adhere to that good bit of advice but I admit, it's almost impossible to follow.
"that joke would bomb, but that's because most people are good people" no, it's because people don't understand the difference between not laughing at a joke and actually fighting against real injustice. People seem to think sharing a Doug Stanhope clip online has the same effect as trying to get someone elected who will stop the drug war.
Yea I agree. Much of Bill's material was more than comedy. And yet he was funny. Don't know exactly what joe was trying to say there. Comedy isn't just one dimensional, it can be more than just funny.
I loved the book "Damned", guess I could relate to the dead girl and the end was so weird I went searching for more of Chuck's work. His writing is really good, so different from of other authors.
I have read quite a few of his books in prison in Indiana. They were library books. I had read Lullaby, Choke, and Rant at one prison, then at a higher security prison I read Damned, Doomed, Pygmy maybe few more. I am certain If administration knew the content they would not be allowed there. There.was a bunch of Richard Laymon books too. Those are..I don't even know how to describe Laymons books..
I really felt the story about the kid who died from falling off his bike and hitting his head on the curb. I had a bike accident once too when I was kid, i was going down a steep hill when my handle bars turned inward on me while going too fast downhill, I flipped and I hit my head on the street just barely missing the curb. I got up with just scratches and a huge bump on my head, it could have easily gone worse. Helmets are key
I fell off the roof onto the driveway when i was 8.Broken arm.I shouldve been that boy.Something to think about.I hadnt thought about that in 40 years.
