I read her book Culture Clash and found it to be convoluted. Your methods are logical and filled with common sense.

I correct when my dogs even start to give my kids a stare. But if they're growling at something in the night outside my door, then I go investigate. If they're growling at a dog walking on the other side of the street, then that gets corrected.

Re: punishing a growl: It also depends what they're growling for. If it's to protect a toy or treat, you solve it differently than when a dog tells a person not to get next to them on the couch or another dog not to sniff their butts. Some growls are dealt with by dealing with an underlying issue, others are just a correction for acting like a bully.

Regarding petting a fearful dog during an episode: we had a terrier mix dog family: father, mother, brother, and sister. The brother and sister were terrified of rainstorms, and they would run to one of us during storms. Whoever they ran to would "comfort" them - pet them, reassure them, etc. (This was before Cesar Millan was a thing, so we didn't really know better.) This went on for the duration of their lives. When I got a GSD puppy a year and a half ago, I determined that I would NOT pet him or reinforce him if he showed fear during storms or any other time. I did not want to reinforce his fear. The result? My now adult GSD seems unafraid of anything. Sometimes he gets startled by something on a walk, but he recovers quickly and moves on. So, in my completely NON-professional opinion, not nurturing fear really is a thing.

Agreed. You shouldn't nurture fear in dogs (and probably not even in human babies either). What you should do is protect them if there is a legitimate threat, and if the threat isn't legitimate, you should just sit with them, be unafraid yourself, and let them see that there's nothing to be afraid of.
@OGA103

Absolutely. My first dog was terrified of trees, trash cans, cars, everything on our walks. I ignored it. Many times I'd stop next to the large tree and just hang out there until he calmed down. After a couple weeks he was fine. I never coddled him when he displyed fear for things that wouldn't hurt him and he got over it pretty quick.

I let my dogs go first through a doorway in order to avoid a huge tangle up, but they have to stop and wait for my permission before they are allowed to go. They are sitting and the door is open before they get the okay and they must wait at each new area for the go ahead. This is simply bc our home has narrow entryways and w 2 very large dogs it is near impossible to open the and get past them to have them walking behind me. But it is very clear to both of them that they are not in control of what happens. If I stand w the door open for 2min before I give the break command, they both know that trying to leave before they get permission will only end up with them being sat back down and starting over again.

To Joel Beckman and all the Beckman Dog Training associates, and Prince and your family: I am watching your older videos because I don't want to miss any of your training videos. Since the day that I randomly found you on RU-vid, I have loved your training techniques, your natural affinity for understanding dog behaviors, the success that I see in dogs you have trained, and most of all your absolute love for dogs and your dedication to helpjng dog owners. I do believe that God gave us dogs to allow us to understand His unconditional love for each and everyone of us and His ability to forgive us when we make mistakes whether intentionally or unintentionally. Dog is God spelled backwards and maybe that doesn't mean anything to some people but it means a lot to me as I rarely believe in coincidences. How many humans treat other humans the way a dog treats their owners? I understand that a dog's behavior towards humans will be different if it has been abused or severely traumatized, but for the most part, dogs love us unconditionally, don't hold grudges or unforgiveness, and would give up their life to save their owners. Please, keep up the great work that you are doing! So many dog owners need to know more about raising and training their dogs and you provide that freely in a manner in which people can do these techniques in their own homes everday and be successful with having a happy, obedient, and well-adjusted dog. I often say that I need your business card to give out to people because when I am walking my dog or she is playing at the dog park, I almost always talk about you and most people don't have pen and paper to write down your name and forget it before they get home unfortunately. Sincerely, from a loyal subscriber and admirer, Samantha and Kiera, my husky. ❤🐕💯

I am fortunate to have found this trainer. I always lead my dogs and have well-behaved animals for the most part. But I do not do much training. His methodology and teaching: breaking a training technique into parts and then naming each part, has helped me train my Shih Tzu. I have watched and read much of what Cesar Milan has produced. I've found that those who grew up in areas with a rural-suburban geography had the opportunity to observe dogs in different environments. Do dogs pack? Ask any Indiana farm boy about their experiences with feral dogs. You never come across just one. Recently, at a Del Webb community, there was a group of three feral dogs living I presume in the surrounding rural area. I came across them a couple of times. It seems to me that any species of animal living in groups will have some sort of hierarchy. Further, it seems to me to be counterproductive to weaken subordinates as that would weaken the strength of the group.

Your understanding of dog behavior with breed specificity and your ability to hone in on the dog's signals is top notch. I just recently found your channel. Have you written any comprehensive books on dog training? If not, you have a very unique opportunity to capitalize on not only writing a general guide, but also potentially a breed specific series of books. If you haven't done that, already, I highly encourage you to consider it, as this would be a really productive way to help educate people and profit from all your work in a residual way and I think it's a really great idea lol Since I found your channel, I have been sharing your videos and some of your history and key methods with every dog owner I know. LOL, I taught my dog to growl instead of barking when he hears a noise. I cannot stand yappy dogs that bark at anything and everything. He will come to me growl and look in the direction he heard the noise. I've taught all my dogs to do this. After he reports to me I praise him and say, OK I've got it. He'll fall in behind me if I need to investigate it. Otherwise his job is done and he knows to go lie down or snuggle with me. I will punish a growel, for example, if it is directed toward a human I'm approaching on a walk or another leashed dog. However, it only takes a snap of the leash and a sharp vocal "aach quit" for him to stop and look at me to follow my lead. He was very easy to teach even though I didn't adopt him until he was 11-months-old and he was not socialized at all. I attribute the ease of teaching him to the fact that from the minute he stepped foot in my home the rules were applied as the issues slowly revealed themselves and he consistently received the same cues from me. Emphasis on the word, consistently. He needs work with children. Since I don't have any little ones around I have to watch closely when opportunities arise. He was growling at approaching children on walks. However, he would immediately jump behind me afterwards telling me that the growels were out of fear not aggression. I got him over this by stepping to the side of the path with him sitting in heel position as they pass by. The growling stopped but he still is very concerned about children. He knows he can trust me to have control of the situation and he knows that the heel position is his safe zone but he is still concerned about kids. I'm now offering treat rewards whenever he is around children while they pass by or immediately after they pass. I show him the treat and bring it up to my face so he focuses on me rather than the child. I want him to associate good things when kids are nearby. It is such a joy to work with him and see how his confidence grows. Oh, and he does play growels when we play tug. Easy to tell the difference and I love it when he gets all fresh and goofy.

@rouxchat6033
@rouxchat6033 2 года назад
@@RissShinsei @Arai Shinsei Эля Hi, Arai, I'm a 72-years-old retired animal trainer of dogs, cats, and horses. Please don't take this wrong but I have no desire to teach the concepts of training any longer. Training the animals was always the easy part. The hard part was teaching the humans. Again, I mean no disrespect to you personally. But I have help for you. I will say that any unwanted behaviors in animals can be eliminated or modified or shaped depending on where one wants to go with it. If you don't want your dog to bark, simply stop the dog from barking. You HAVE to be consistent each and every time. You must stop what you are doing and correct the dog. You cannot do it 3 times and then decide you are too busy to stop the dog the 4th time. I think Joel Beckman is probably one of the best trainers I've seen in years. I not only like his methodology, I completely agree with his philosophy. He has a ton of videos and if you take the time to watch them, you will learn a lot about dog training and how dogs think and behave. Please watch them more than one time because it will keep you motivated to continue working with your dog. I've selected two of his videos that I believe would be a good starting point. They are at the end of this comment. You are fortunate in that you are starting with a puppy. Puppies are raw clay and as such far easier to train. I believe in starting puppies out the minute you bring them home with fun techniques. Too many people wait until the dogs are 6 months or older to begin training. By then several unwanted behaviors have already set in. So, again. Please don't be offended that I am not outlining a step-by-step approach with regard to modifying barking to growling. In one of the two videos below, Joel discusses and demonstrates correcting unwanted barking. All the best to you and congrats on your new family member. Here are Joel's videos: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ntimHRs_Ky4.html and ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-OZRwS3yelEA.html

Many dogs have problems because we're not able to give them directions and clear messages also because we don't make them work and stimulate them intellectually. Sometimes i like to call him (the dog) to help me look for something behind the couch, he gets very interested in what i'm doing so we look together between the boxes and his toys and that makes him Happy when i let him find his absolutely favorite One hidden behind other boxes: the Gummy ball, i pick It, i Say stuff like "there's your Toy or you found it and such a good boy, i keep It between my hands, let him smell It, manipolate It a Little and oppose a little resistance and then i let him pick It from my hands, dogs love to steal from you and chew forbidden stuff like the furniture, no matter how many Toys you'll give them. this Will keep them busy and focused on the toy you'll sometimes try to get away from them without playing toug. Don't Just throw them the toy and expect them to not do forbidden things. Same i do with his other Toys (bone, horn, olive Stick), i switch, He gets really Happy and chew It litterally for hours. Always do things together with your dogs, also make them solve problems, they love It, don't Just throw the toys, make them desire them, make them Explore and work for them (the toys) but especially do other stuff together rather than Just playing only the Boring Stick game. Good things Will happen if you call him while you start making some noises. if you have a dominant dog that never comes when you, After you taught him to stay call him, his curiosity over what you're doing over there Will win over his "i'm the leader so i don't follow or come, i don't care". The go and get him Is Amazing but sometimes i like to change and offer him games where we cooperate. he'll be more willing to come to you next time because Guess what, also interesting things happen when you call. However i don't Always use this thing, i switch and if my dog don't comes, most of the times i go get him no matter what.

When my dog growled, it was because something was upsetting him. Let dogs display their emotions, let them vent. There's a saying in my country that translates to something like "don't fear a dog while it's barking, fear it when it's quiet." A growl is a warning. You remove the warning, the dog will lunge instantly without giving you time to react. You can punish a growl, but you need to know when. If he's growling at a child for no reason, punish the behavior. If he's growling because a dodgy looking person is coming your way, release the devil.

Interesting video. Some people get so wrapped up in the "dogma" (no pun intended) that they forget about common sense, and the old adage... do what works. That's what I do in my training. I'm not a professional, but I've trained my own dogs for many years, in diverse areas such as competitive obedience, agility, retriever field training, and most recently, sheep dog training with border collies and livestock. I live on a ranch and my dogs do real work every day. So, when training, I do what I find works, which might be different for different dogs, that is consistent with my own values. I don't use painful methods, but I do use punishment when needed, positive reinforcement, and most of all, patience. I don't follow dogmas like ""pack leader theory has been debunked". My experience and common sense has taught that leadership is a real thing. Science does provide an interesting basis for some approaches, but science is often done by controlling variables one at a time, and that doesn't always translate to the multivariable real world.

About Tug O'War : I have an agressive dog (always has been since I adopted him at 1 and a half yo, never socialized, shepherd/husky mix, probably mistreated etc, we've made HUGE progress but apparently his brain is fried and his agression problem with probably never stop, we have to live with it), and I used to play Tug of war with him cause I heard only good things about it (+ it was fun for him and me !). I trained him SUPER well at it, was so proud, he'd grab it when I say OK and release right at the second I ask him to. But one trainer (out of the many, many, MANY i've seen) told me "it's not necessarily that it will make your dog agressive, however, it DOES teach him to better and better his bite, his jaw strength and his grip. So with an agressive dog, it might be a good idea to stop playing this game". Idk, it made sense to me and I stopped playing Tug.

Then direct him, either lead him away or demonstrate his fears are unfoynded. He once took exception to a billboard with a particularly smarmy real estate manager's face on. I rewarded him with a treat for that one. The dog knows he's valued as a contributor to pack safety, but he's not pack leader and his respect for the leader is not diminished.

I’ve just watched this video, and I have a question regarding growing my nine month boxer pitbull mix puppy likes to growl when he’s playing tug-of-war or when he’s playing with my pitbull that is six years old. But we have noticed that it’s a fun growl if you can say that because he’s doing it when he’s playing and not aggressive at all. Because we’ve also heard him when he’s scared or angry that he growls and it’s not the same sound. Should we stop him from growling at all?

I have a question about letting dogs go through a door first. For example, I took my car to the dealership to get fixed, it's a few streets away from my house so I brought Oreo with me so he could get a walk on the way back to the house. I leashed him up and went into the dealership. Before entering I opened the door, and told oreo it was OK to enter while I hold this big heavy glass door open for him to walk through, before me. . The dealership door is designed to close automatically when opened so i physically have to hold it open for him to go through. I don't think either myself or Oreo sees this as a dominance thing, because I can actually see his fear of the door hurting him if I let go.

I don‘t know if it is impossible, but at least it is very hard to overcome self rewarding behavior (extensive barking, lunging etc.) solely with treats. And dogs are not dumb. At some point my dog got the idea that he just needed to lag behind and wait for the call. He knew he would get a treat. My dog trainer just said „oh yes, he is using you as a treat dispenser“😂

The difference between a bribe and a reward: A reward is something you give after the dog has chosen to do what you asked. A bribe is something you offer to cause them to do something. It's easy to bribe a child (if you behave I'll give you a treat at checkout). Not sure how you can actually bribe a dog. Perhaps when people say "bribe", they actually are concerned about the dog expecting the treat and not complying when the treat is no longer offered. But that is just a phase-out process. Treats are a great tool.

With a dog in a prolonged fear state such as a fear of fireworks I tend to just hold and look to reassure but without noise. If they are jumpy I hold them firmly so as to decrease the reactive side. I've found that holding sensitively and calmly does help to calm the dog down. The idea is to project a calm, caring, empathic energy to the dog. This works for me as I have faith in this method and the dog seems to pick up on this.

That's what I do whenever we have a bad thunderstorm. I live in a sub-tropical city and the storms can get wild. If they get rowdy and start barking at the window or balcony, I firmly (firm as in confident, not mean) tell them to come to me. I want to give them the message that even with a storm outside, nothing has changed here, we still follow the rules of the house. I then sit calmly and pet them intermittently, or just sit with them with my hand resting on them so they can feel my calmness. Settles them right down

I let my dogs go first through doorways like with front and back doors, so I can make sure all 4 dogs are either outside or all made it back inside from potty time. But I have them wait till I say “ok”. Instead of just flying through the door. But I could try to go out first and inside first and then look back to make sure all 4 have either made it in or out or have them walk beside me, 1 of them and the rest follow. But it’s always been a habit to let my dogs go ahead of me in the yard to make sure they all made it out before closing the door behind me, wether going in and out but I can try a different method of going first and then call them in or out behind me. It’ll take some time to get used to something different, but it’s worth a shot. Thank you.

With the fear thing, there seems to me to be a fine line between enabling fear and comforting a fearful dog. If there is no real reason for the dog (or child) to fear a situation, too much petting and comfort can enable and justify an unreasonable fear. However, acknowledging that the fear exists and supplying calm comfort can help. I have a dog who is terrified of thunder (which can’t hurt you). When we have a thunderstorm, I will allow her to sit near or on me, (provide calm comfort) but I don’t feed her treats or stroke her incessantly. I’ll talk to her gently and quietly to let her know we’re safe and wrap her in a blanket to help muffle the sound, and maybe turn on some music. When she quits shaking and seems to calm down, I’ll put her in her kennel, cover it with a heavy blanket and give her a meaty frozen raw bone to chew to give her something rewarding to focus on. She’ll never believe that thunder is ok, but she now knows that we have a process for dealing with that particular fear and we get thru it. When we get the occasional thunderstorm, she knows we have a routine that keeps her feeling safe. The reward is for her calming down. This routine has gone from maybe an hour of lap and blanket to 15 minutes between first thunder to bone in kennel. Sometimes we just go straight to kennel. I see this as progress. She’s also afraid of gunfire. We have a neighbor who likes to shoot …a lot! She now voluntarily goes straight to her kennel while he’s shooting and is fine with having a “safety zone”. I feel I’ve helped her learn a behavior that helps her self sooth. So, like “punishment”, there is a spectrum of reaction and each dog is different in its needs and solutions. I’m never going to lock her outside during a thunderstorm to let her “get over it” because that would be cruel and unnecessary punishment when she’s done nothing wrong, and it wouldn’t help her. BTW, 4th of July is just 2 weeks of herbal and/or pharmaceutical tranquilizers and lots of kennel time for her! She’s really not afraid of anything else in her life.

Dogs are special only because dogs were "created" by human gene selection. Only those creatures that would obey orders would survive and eventually became modern domesticated dogs. Cats on the other hand have worked for human by catching rodents. But cats do not require training to catch rodents. It is their instinctive behavior. So, obedience has never been an issue with cats and hence the human-cat relation developed without too much gene selection or with a different kind of gene selection. Cats only need to be not aggressive to coexist with humans.

Any suggestions for correcting a Chihuahua when he is in "protection mode?" When we correct him, he becomes more aggressive. My daughter has been working at a board/training facility now for almost 3 years and still cannot figure out how to correct him so he calms down. She has used body pressure, loud voice, banging noise, etc. If I tell him no, or touch him to get his attention, he attacks me. We feed the elderly 7 lbs cat first, then the large 16 lbs cat second and finally the 70 lbs aggressive herd dog last. The dog, who is dominant over every living animal outside the house, turns away and defers to the little old lady cat and I never worry about him ever bullying her. We did it as safety socialization and it worked!

I had a malamute who had that complete lack of appetite satiety threshold. As a puppy i had to not only feed her last, but had to pretend to eat her food with her to get her to both slow down, stop claiming all the food, and from stealing all the other dogs' food. She even got into the bin of frozen raw dog food that i kept outside in the winter. -27 degrees outside and she wolved down 2 five pound blocks of food before my kids caught her in the act, hypothermic and bloated from hell. 4 years later proceeded to work her way through more than half a 50 lb bag of frozen raw turkey blocks before i realized what she was doing. She had gotten the lid off the bin, went to town, would come in when she couldnt eat any longer, get sick, then beg to go outside, where she apparently would proceed to binge some more. What a freaking dog she was. 😂

I totally GOT It. My dog strated to make disappointment noises After i ate from his Bowl. I fill It with puppy beef can and then stuck One of jar of baby beef food in it's food (the whole jar), i take a tea spoon, sit to the table and eat. his First reactions were unbelivable. Everyone here eats before him and he must wait his turn (another 20 minutes After we finish eatting). He used to growl and bark, try to snap at us run back forwads around the house like crazy with the alligator face and his ears straight behind. Things GOT Better and our weimaraner Is chiller than before. He respects me much more now, he stopped demanding to eat immediatelly and especially like that, he stopped jumping on me snapping at me, my hands, throat, nose, nipping my child, but still overwhelms my partner jumping on him, biting his shoes, trousers and snapping at his hands or wherever he can. My partner Is the one Who showed affection to these behaviours, babies him so i had to work very hard on the dog while he was away working to correct his behaviours. It was not enough and i had to do other things like make him wait, using the leash to exercise and also correct him around the house, many things. At the same time i took care of my kid and of course didn't ket the dog any longer get close to my kid unless i'm not able to hold the dog. PS: i don't have to tell you that my partner left him sleep in the bed the First days, i placed the dog out because After more or less 2 or 3 days he started to do all this so i Remembered my grandparents words and finally understood exactly what they ment to Say. My boyfriend Is starting to understand what i mean so he's trying to cooperate with me instead of reinforcing bad behaviours and confusing the dog with different messages.

Jerky Dogs. LOL yes! I've always explained dogs (bears too, close enough) that way. These animals are the natural born "Joey's" of the animal world. They are consummate kill stealers first and foremost, and that is pulled off with persistent violent harassment and clearly understood interspecies threats. Us too of course, but we were the best ever at this strategy, and I believe that's the perspective bridge that allows us to really empathize with them to a greater extent than other animals. Dogs made the move towards being dedicated human scavengers as well, which is probably the driving selection move that created their ability to understand us in turn.

I once played tug of war with a gal friend's not well behaved pit bull. She was a meek person and this dog was stressed out. The dog would rip the toy away repeatedly, so I decided that I would win the tug of war as a display of dominance. I lifted it right off the ground, put it down, held the toy strong and the dog immediately stopped playing with me. Was a textbook case of a dog that felt it needed to be the alpha and look out for the owner because the owner certainly was not.

I'm not sure you're right but i'm not the Expert here. I've been taught by my old style shepperds grandparents to not do rough games with them because they'll become more aggressive and to not play on their playground the game of Who Is stronger because they're programmed to win their game and It ain't your game. You can contraddict me and i accept It, however, for me it's a matter of correction and subtile messages you send to the dog without exibiting for the supremacy. The leader of the pack never Needs to show who's the boss scuffling, he watches the lower members in the hierarchy scale doing that, the lower ones Need to show their strengt and exibit in front of the boss Who might ignore them or look at them. The boss obtains respect and he acts superior. He gives correction sometimes to the rebels and when needed gets into fight only if necessary, to mantain his position but never Need to exibit, only if necessary he gets very serious and someone gets seriousely hurt.

In my pack, there is a dominance, me number 1. And all other of the dogs think they are each top dog below me in varying strengths. They are fluid and mood/environment influenced. I’ve never seen a convincing placement other than at certain times one of them decides to show their strength when the mood or environment favours them. My Boarder Collie is king in the field over my other dogs. My old lab is king in the corridors when he can use his weight to block and barge others. My Lhasa Apso is king because he sleeps on the bed with his penis threatening the girls because he is the only male. 4 others doing similar or lesser. None of it matters as long as I have harmony. I train dogs for others, these days, I would never make a one dimensional statement like those. Seeing the dog in its 3D environment and actual self is far more informative. Water is water, but it fits many colourful and shapely vessels, as long as it doesn’t leak, it’s all good. Absolutely loving your work, jealous even!

4:25 this DEPENDS ENTIRELY ON THE SITUATION. For example, I stupidly got in a new dogs face, trying to smell if she had eaten poop when she was dozing. She woke suddenly and snapped at my face. Had I reprimanded her, I would have been saying "I get to treat you however badly I want, and you can't do anything about it." That is abuse. What she experienced was waking up to some stranger in her face which would scare the crap out of most people and elicit an extreme response. I was also way overstepping my boundaries with her at that point in our relationship. Also, I found out a new, older dog had a hip problem when he (a totally happy go lucky dog) 'viciously' snarled at me when I tried to push his butt over a little bit. Neither of those things were aggression. I had way overstepped boundaries and caused pain, and the dogs had every right to communicate that and have their boundaries respected. If you expect a dog to respect your rules and boundaries, you need to respect theirs. They are not toys for us to do whatever we want with.
