The probability of Notre Dame joining a conference in 2, 4, 6, or 10 years based on financial numbers, is missing other important variables. The Fighting Irish are about renegotiate there TV deal with NBC. The numbers for this deal between $60-$75 million per year. The ACC would be another $15-$20 million. Joe and Colin believe that money is the driving issue that will make ND join a conference. I disagree. The Irish have 2 TV deals, a place for other men/women's Olympic sports, enhanced path to college football playoffs, with the expansion to 12 teams. In addition, to other revenue streams such as clothing apparel contracts. The point ND has less money for it's road games in football, contrasted by conference aligned teams, is not totally accurate. When Notre Dame comes to your stadium to play, you become the center of the universe for that particular Saturday. The stadium is sold out, most likely over half with Irish fans. The Fighting Irish have the local Alumni/ Notre Dame club closest to the game as host for the Notre Dame contingent attending the game, drawing in thousands of fans to a pep rally, fund raiders and donations to the University. God only knows how much Our Lady's University earns at an away game. Lastly, Notre Dame has an endowment fund of over 13 billion, third highest amount all colleges and universities. If the Irish ever were to join a conference in football, it won't ever be the Big Ten, trust me.

Would never work. The overall conference would lose recruiting leverage. Think! If you can’t guarantee a recruit that your team won’t be relegated during their years then they will say see ya and go play in the big 20 or SEC. Moreover, if after their first year their college gets relegated, it’s hello transfer portal. Total chaos and would never work. These “experts” are just shooting from the hip.

Notre Dame, Washington, Oregon, and Stanford I think makes the most sense for BIG10 expansion. They are all top 25 money making programs, solid football programs, and good basketball programs. SEC Big Ten challenges would be awesome. But something tells me the team that draws Alabama would be very upset. You can barely afford to lose 1 game to make the CFP. Until they expand it to 6 or 8 teams, someone like USC who doesn't play ohio state or Michigan every season depending on divisions would be at a massive advantage. Obviously they'd play in the conference championship but lose that and at 2 losses you have no shot in a 4 team playoff. Now imagine you play Osu or Michigan on the road where you're more likely to lose than at home, you don't get another chance. Maybe with 1 close loss to the conference champion you get consideration but with 2, no shot.

Notre Dame's reason for not joining the Big 10 in the 90s and then partially joining the ACC was that they needed to play USC and the ACC every year for coast to coast exposure for recruitment. Well they can have coast to coast exposure and play the USC now if they join the Big 10 and make more money simultaneously. They're already a member of Big 10 Hockey as the only CCHA member who isn't in the Big 10 that was allowed to join.

The Big Ten and Notre Dame will never agree to a full membership inside the conference. The Fighting Irish hockey program is part of the Big Ten due out of necessity, due to a lack of viable alternatives. In football, however, this is not the case. I remember that first season of Pac-12 after the new tv deal in 2012 and it still sucked. Too many conference games, lower division games, and late night games. Having no dominant team in the conference didn't help nationally either.
@isaacdunaway7149
@isaacdunaway7149 2 года назад
No dominant team is what I think really holds the Pac 12 back and no one talks about it. The other P5 conferences consistently get to the playoffs but it's always Oklahoma in the big 12, Clemson in the ACC, Ohio State in the big ten (and Michigan this past year) and Alabama in the SEC (with the occasional Georgia or LSU appearance). The Pac 12 doesn't have that powerhouse so that's why they never get in. That I think is the biggest separator with the Pac 12 and these other conferences
@jarlwhiterun7478
@jarlwhiterun7478 2 года назад
@@isaacdunaway7149 Agreed. Each conference needs that anchor that the SEC and (most of the time) Big 10 have. @ckstaff
@ckstaff 2 года назад
That is where the fans best decide what they want. Top heavy conferences or parity. Actually it was not parity in the PAC that was the problem. It was lack of exposure, bad TV time slots and the flop of what was to be a promising P12 Network.

@KevinWidesouls
@KevinWidesouls 2 года назад
The amount of money in a state is basically irrelevant though unless it directly relates to the alumni base, boosters, brand name of the school, etc. Alabama as a state can finish last in every economic metric and it still wouldn’t impact the success of Bama’s football team. It’s very similar for OU too. I feel like we’re splitting hairs when we talk about money at the top 25 or so programs. Yes, schools like Texas, Bama, and Ohio State might have more money than everyone else, but the next few tiers of schools still have deep enough pockets via their boosters to afford to attract elite talent via NIL deals.

Riley knew how easily his OU job could evaporate. All four BIG 12 coaches who bested him with less talent were still going to be there. I dont see that happening for another 10-12 years. They are not going to consolidate until the ACC is done with their contract. The GOR in that conference is too complicated, too expensive, and will take too much time for the elite programs to get out of. ESPN will not destroy the partnership with the Elite members in the conference along with the other members in the conference. Notre Dame still wants its independence and still has a seat on the playoff committee. Notre Dame AD still has a strong relationship with Greg Sankey. College football as I grew up knowing and loving it, where actual academic institutions that happen to have sports teams played each other, is dead it's business and that just makes me sad. There's just a lot of good things that are being lost in all of this rush for bigger market shares. Not trying to be over dramatic just calling it like I see it. Bummer.

Wow~ You must be over 80 years old Brad. I knew that it was true when G. R. Ford was captain and starting center at Michigan since there was no sports TV and the NFL was nothing. Being a graduate assistant to go to law school was a better option than playing in the NFL. But that’s not the case since maybe the 70s. On the other side this is great for the Olympic sports since half of that Football money goes on to cover the cost of all those varsity teams. Just look at the shooting medals won by Kentucky and West Virginia athletes. And the fencing medals by the couple who went to Norte Dame and continued on to become physicians after retiring from the Olympics

The college football game interest IS NOT driven by "big game" matchups. It NEVER has. It is driven by fan interest in their OWN teams to do well against whoever their opponents are in order to move up the rankings to possibly reach the playoffs. That's what drives the college game interest. Take UCF, Wake Forest, & Cincinnati as of late when they were undefeated most of the season - NOBODY cared who they were playing & in what conference they were in - everyone's interest was in how well they were playing

If the B1G can snag and convince Notre Dame to join, I think our next move is to grab Stanford... and Duke/NC. Kansas and Washington would be my picks after those 3 but I dont think Washingtons Academics would hold up for B1G requirements. Same goes for Oregon. I'd love to have Clemson but geographically they are in SEC Country. So, our best bets if we get Notre Dame are Stanford(for sure), and 2 picks from Duke/UNC/Kansas. Kansas would prob be left out unless we picked up another team to make it even numbers.. maybe Syracuse?

I think it's sad that conferences are now relying more on what Bean counters tell them than actually on the field performance. I remember when Utah and TCU made the jump because they were winning too much to big ignored. You have schools like Texas and UCLA which have been garbage on the field, schools like USC which has been disappointing almost every year reaping great benefits for nothing on the field. And the media applauds them for it and approves all of this. I hope a conference decides to put together the best football programs, not the best media markets or whatever criteria they use to keep good teams out. According to the media there are only like five or six premier programs but there are a lot more programs that think they are. It's sad to see so much greed go unchecked and reward teams for what they were 50 years ago, not what they are now.

As a lifelong ND fan, I agree. I do however think that this model would work if they used it as a deal to join the Big 10 after a few years of a “partnership” to ensure the departure fines, etc. are a little more bearable. I love being independent in football, but our best years/seasons included having Mich, MSU, Purdue, PSU, along with the staple of USC on the schedule. I may be in the minority of ND fans, but I embrace this. Could you imagine yearly TV ratings with games that involve, OSU, Mich, USC, ND, etc.

I agree with your comments on "style",& " geography" regarding the Irish. What N.D. has had that almost NO OTHER B10 has had the ballz to do is schedule anybody, anytime,& anywhere. In any given year, the Irish will play USC, STANFORD, MICHIGAN, an elite SEC school,& the best teams in the ACC( clemson, canes, fsu). On top of that, NBC gave them their own soapbox to stand on. Ask yourself.....would a Michigan voluntarily play such a schedule on a yearly basis? Finally...what you call "pride", I'd call common sense for the Irish to have remained Independent. Unfortunately for them now, they may no longer have that option.

@@kbrewski1 I love tradition but I'm a realist. This all started when SCOTUS decided schools owned the TV rights to their games, not the NCAA. About that time cable entered the marketplace with a big need for inventory. Schools pooled their rights with their conferences, and that's what made having the best TV markets matter. Now NIL is driving it. Schools need the large markets to generate the opportunities for all students, not just the stars, to benefit or suffer in recruiting. And the day is coming when athletes will want regular pay. The irony is that I think conferences will get big enough to reconstitute regionally within themselves, not between themselves.

Not quit accuarate. They needed a place for their Olympic sports after the Big East blew up. No onther power conference would give them the sweet heart deal that the Big East did...which is play as little or as much conference games in football as you want. Big Ten and Big XII both said no without full membership. ACC was the only one that let them park their Olympic Sports AS LONG as they played 5 ACC games. It wasn't that ND was struggling with schedule, it was they had their hand forced to play ACC games so they could park their other sports.

@@spud1907 In 1992, ND was one of 15 independent schools with football. In 2013, when it joined the ACC, it was one of just 6 such schools. For a decade, 2003 to 2012, it was between 3 and 5 teams. It's opponents in conferences have more of their schedules consumed within their conferences, leaving ND fewer options. Was the 5-game commitment to the ACC the primary reason for joining, probably not. But did it alleviate football scheduling concerns? Oh yeah. It's been suggested the B1G might want to go to 10 games in conference. If others follow ND options get even tighter, don't they?
@kbrewski1

@@spud1907 Half of the ACC are schools that played football in the BigE. As I pointed out above, most of the BigE football schools already were long time ND rivals. Miami, Pitt, Boston College, Syracuse periodically. So agreeing to 5 ACC games was no big deal for ND when they were already scheduling those schools anyway, plus FSU was in the ACC, and Ga Tech, old rivals. ND brings eyeballs and ratings to every sport for the ACC. Men's bball went to 2 Elite 8s in a row right off the bat. The women's bball team has been in multi F4s and won a NC for ACC. The lacrosse team is topflight . Good soccer programs. The bball team upset 2 SEC teams> beat 1 seed Tenn to go to CWSeries, the only cold weather northern team in the CWS.
